Ariel’s DIY “I Love Lucy” Baby Shower Invitations

Seattle-based designer and photographer Ariel Nay is expecting her first child – a baby girl! – this spring. The proud parents have already decided to name their daughter Lucy, so an “I Love Lucy” themed baby shower seemed like the perfect fit. Ariel DIY’d the invitations using some sparkly cardstock, a couple of rubber stamps, and a whole lot of love.

From Ariel: My fiancé and I are expecting our first child this March and recently had her baby shower. We’ve already named her Lucy Mae Lewis and felt an ‘I Love Lucy’ Baby Shower was more than appropriate.

While I would have loved to have it all professionally printed, I took my small budget and made most of it by hand. After reflecting on the original ‘I Love Lucy’ logo, I wanted to give it a more delicate typographic update. Using the typeface Nelly Script, I designed the ‘I Love Lucy’ and ‘Lucy Mae Lewis’ and had them made into stamps using Simon Stamps. I purchased shimmering red and gold cardstock at Michaels and had the invitation text printed on white cardstock at Staples.

Then, I used a spray mount to adhere the black and white printed text to the shimmering red paper, cut the hearts by hand and stamped the script type on the front and back. For the smaller gold hearts, I used a heart die-cutter and gold paper clips to attach the heart and Diaper Raffle note to the invitation.

In total, I kept right with my $100 budget that made me 35 invitations and the entire project took about 12-15 hours. I would still say hiring a professional printer is an excellent option as they can produce results you just can’t mimic, but it also felt good to make most of this special project with my own two hands.

The envelopes we ordered from Envelope Mall, the addresses were handwritten, Johnny Cash forever mailing stamps were used as they seemed to fit the era, and lastly, each letter sealed with a self-made, lipstick kiss.

Happy Weekend!

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! I hope you’re able to spend time with your special people this weekend! We got a few more inches of snow here in DC on Wednesday night and are expected to get even more this weekend, so we’re hunkered down for a quiet weekend at home. Is it spring yet?? Sigh. But in the meantime…

Hello Brick & Mortar: Real Customers, Love Multiplies Love

In early February of 2005, I stood in line at a post office in Washington, DC with a stack of envelopes sandwiched between my hands and my chin. The lady in front of me turned and said “Well, don’t you have a lot of sweethearts!” It made me ineffably happy. It was the end of my third year of law school and I was doing fine, in the sense that your third year is your last year. But I had spent a week on my floor making 50+ valentines with the sneaking suspicion about happiness and where I might find it. The moral of this story is: I am a ridiculous fan of Valentine’s Day and it comes as a surprise to absolutely no one that I’m no longer practicing law. – Emily of Clementine

Gemma’s Modern Footprint Baby Announcements

Ah – tiny footprints! Designer Kate Holgate created these darling baby announcements for the first child of her dear friend. Inspired by bright jewel tones and fabric, Kate created modern announcements that are full of pattern and personality. And of course we can’t forget the beautiful photo of the sweet newborn!

From Kate: My dear friend, Heather, asked if I might be willing to design her first baby’s announcements. Heather and her husband, Mike, are a fun, hip, wonderful couple. Heather and I chose bright jewel tones. Inspired by some fabric, I created a modern pattern for the announcement and utilized modern type to display the birth information.

To create an element of surprise, I asked Heather to give me a scan of her daughter’s newborn footprint for the front of the z-folded card. Crissie McDowell took Gemma’s photos. We tied the piece together with a “G is for Gemma” monogram and mailed the announcements in bright fuchsia envelopes. Gemma made her debut to family and friends in style.
