Paper Party 2018! Colorful Modern Abstract Art Party Inspiration

As promised, I’m sharing the photos from this year’s Paper Party during the National Stationery Show! As you saw with the invitations and save the dates, our party inspiration was driven by a non-traditional color palette – mustard yellow, pale pink, peach, lavender, navy blue, and forest green – and modern abstract shapes. For those of you looking for some colorful modern abstract art party inspiration, we’ll be sharing all the fun party details with you today! This year’s party featured a TON of balloons, a gorgeous art print wall, a hand painted paper art installation, and a calligraphy bar! It was such a wonderful evening with some of the most lovely people in the stationery industry, and together we raised more than seven thousand dollars to help support women’s empowerment and equal rights!

This was my fifth year organizing a major party for the stationery industry during the National Stationery Show. In the past, we’ve always done a free party, but this year I wanted to do something a bit different and find a way to give back in a small way. So I joined forces with Writes for Women, an advocacy group for the stationery industry that helps raise money for women’s empowerment and equal rights via the Ms. Foundation. We sold tickets to this year’s party and ended up raising more than $7,100 – more than I had ever imagined in my wildest dreams! Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who came to the party for making this possible!

This year’s party was again held at Hudson Terrace on their rooftop terrace. My talented friend (and professional event planner) Janice from Bellwether Events helped me plan the party, along with Melinda of Lion in the Sun and Caroline of CW Pencils (my party planning partners in crime from Writes for Women). And of course the party would not have been possible without our amazing sponsors, including Paper & Ink Arts, Mixbook, Legion Paper, Bella Figura, Sakura of AmericaHester & Cook Design Group, 1canoe2, and the National Stationery Show, and our fantastic creative partners Ramona & Ruth, Sam Teich, Lillian Farag, Farmette Press, and Meant to Be Calligraphy. Let’s get to all the fun details!

Okay, so first – the balloons! I knew that I wanted to incorporate a balloon installation into our party décor this year, and it turned out so fun and colorful! (We used Balloon Saloon for those of you who might need something similar in NYC) We used balloons in shades of pink, peach, deep yellow, teal, and purple – and calligrapher Sam Teich used some of Sakura of America’s Permapaque markers to letter a few fun party phrases on the balloons! It was super easy!

We also made this really fun paper art installation in collaboration with artist Lillian Farag and Legion Paper! I was feeling super inspired by our save the date and invitation design by Ramona & Ruth, so I came up with the idea of creating this installation using sheets of Colorplan and Stonehenge Aqua watercolor paper from Legion Paper. Lillian painted on the Stonehenge sheets in her signature free flowing style, and we layered Lillian’s pieces together with the Colorplan paper in lavender, candy pink, fuchsia pink, citrine, park green, forest green, and imperial blue. Stay tuned for a more detailed DIY post so you can create one of these installations for your own party!

And can we talk about this Mixbook art print wall? So gorgeous! Mixbook works with an amazing roster of artists, including Hello!Lucky, 1canoe2, Black Lamb Studio, Ashley Goldberg, and Amy Tangerine – totally perfect for our colorful evening! The art print wall featured a mix of canvas prints and acrylic block prints, and each print was either super colorful or had a message of women’s empowerment – or both!

Oh! And Mixbook also brought Eunice from Hello!Lucky to sign copies of her brand new book, Be the Change, and do some illustrations on Hello!Lucky for Mixbook stationery. So fun!

I also love having an interactive element at the party – and this year it was a calligraphy bar in collaboration with Paper & Ink Arts! The uber-talented Sam Teich hung out ALL night to do calligraphy demos using a variety of Paper & Ink Arts tools and materials, including this Paint Your Own Oblique Holder, this pointed oblique holder with a Tachikawa G Nib, a Fintec Metallic Palette, Ziller Ink in Wild Viola Violet and Wild Rose Pink, Sumi Ink, and a Size 1 Princeton Series Round Brush.

Pretty much everything in this Sorbet collection was perfect for the party!

  • Infinite thanks to Janice, Melinda, Kelly, and Caroline, for their invaluable help over the past few months and throughout the evening – and our small army of friends who helped with set up before the party. We couldn’t have done it without you!

And of course a big thanks to CJ of Charlie-Juliet Photography for the gorgeous photos and Hudson Terrace for having us!

Navy and White Illustrated Floral Wedding Invitations

Ahhhh…. navy and white is such a beautiful and classic combination. Add in some modern botanical illustrations from one of our talented Designer Rolodex members, Kim of Bright Room Studio, and you’ve got some seriously gorgeous navy and white illustrated floral wedding invitations! I love that Kim and the bride and groom decided to letterpress print the entire suite in a single color – navy blue – which just completely elevates Kim’s beautiful illustrations and lettering. So pretty!

From Kim: Working with Allie and Michael on their invitations was so much fun. I knew it was going to be a great project when I received a design brief written by the groom! He put so much thought and time in to sharing their story, aesthetic and things that were important to them (including their favorite cocktails and guilty pleasures!) that it made the creative process so much fun and made their invitations incredibly personal and special for them.

We started with the cute map save the date. I love creating maps, especially when I get to incorporate illustrations of the architecture and buildings, combined with places that are meaningful to them. They met “the old fashioned way” – at a bar! – so we definitely wanted to incorporate that cute detail, along with the wedding venues. We did the map in a gorgeous blue, which became a design theme for the rest of the suite.

Navy and White Illustrated Floral Wedding Invitations

For the invitation, we wanted to keep it sophisticated but still personal. We chose symbols to represent their heritage: an olive branch for her Greek background and a thistle for his Scottish roots. I illustrated each branch and used it throughout the invitation through patterns, graphic details and the monogram. We letterpress printed the invitation to really make the leaf details pop.

The monogram tag is such a great example of what you can do in the design process. I showed them one design with this leaf pattern and one with the monogram and they couldn’t decide, so we found a way to incorporate both ideas throughout the suite. The monogram was also a perfect detail to use in other elements on their wedding day, such as the sweet notecards, menu and program.

We continued the monochromatic palette through everything, which kept the design cohesive and sophisticated. The little branch details and modern calligraphy style tied the smaller pieces together. What resulted was a lovely invitation that felt personal to them and gave their wedding a beautiful look throughout.

Spring Flower Arranging Tips

I love flowers. I just always have. As a little girl I would stop and literally smell all of the roses during walks around my neighborhood with my dad. As an adult, I try to always have a vase (or two!) of fresh flowers at home. Pretty flowers are the perfect addition to dinner parties and family gatherings – after delicious food and great cocktails, of course. And with Passover and Easter coming up this weekend, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite flower arranging tips for your next get together!

Flower Arranging Tips

1. Keep Things Simple

Flowers don’t need to be complicated. Stick to a single color (mono-chromatic) or a single type of flower (mono-botanical) – or both! My favorite floral arranging trick is to pick up a few bunches of the same in-season flower and drop them into a low vase. My favorite flowers for mono-botanical arrangements include anemones (pictured below), peonies, ranunculus, garden roses, and hellebores (pictured above).

Flower Arranging Tips

Similarly, a large quantity of a very small flower – like chamomile, wax flower, or baby’s breath – looks impressive without being visually cluttered. These smaller flowers also tend to be inexpensive, making them the perfect solution for a party on a budget.

2. Go Small

Huge floral centerpieces can look out of place at an intimate dinner party or cocktail party. Instead, try using several small arrangements with just 3-4 stems each. You’ll be surprised how a few small vases can brighten and transform a room!

Flower Arranging Tips

3. Mix and Match Vessels

I love using similar, but slightly mismatched vases and vessels to help elevate your floral arrangements and tie everything together. Vintage white milk glass vases are the perfect neutral backdrop for colorful flowers, while vintage glass jars collected over time are my preferred vessel for wildflower arrangements. You can even mix and match vase shapes and sizes if you stick to a common material (glass, ceramic, brass, copper, etc.) or a consistent color palette.

Flower Arranging Tips

4. Use a Statement Flower

Single stems of a large beautiful bloom look amazing in vintage bud vases or other vessels repurposed as vases – like the antique crystal perfume bottles seen here. Try placing individual blooms of a single variety, like peonies, dahlias, or even sunflowers, in groups of three for visual impact.

Flower Arranging Tips

5. Mix Things Up

Don’t be afraid to mix different flower varieties together. But try to stay within a specific color palette to make sure things look cohesive. Roses, peonies, dahlias, and ranunculus are all extremely versatile and look amazing mixed with tropical flowers (like the protea below) or combined with wildflower-style blooms like Queen Anne’s Lace, foxglove, scabiosa, or even fresh herbs and berries. Bottom line: if you think it’s pretty, go for it!

Flower Arranging Tips

6. Don’t Forget the Green!

Greens are an essential part of any floral arrangement – you could even create an entire arrangement with just a few greens from the flower market or grocery store! My favorite greens are seeded eucalyptus and silver dollar eucalyptus, maiden hair fern and ming fern, plumosa, geranium leaves, and dusty miller.

Flower Arranging Tips

7. One Big Statement Piece

Every party needs one big statement piece. For cocktail parties, place one large floral arrangement near the entrance or by the bar, with smaller arrangements of 3-4 stems scattered around the room. This is also a great opportunity to bring in a tall floral arrangement that might look out of place elsewhere in the room.

For dinner parties, keep things low and wide with a single large centerpiece at the center of the table. You could even try arranging in a vintage compote, using floral foam or a wire pillow to keep the flowers stable.

Bright and Cheerful Floral Watercolor Wedding Invitations

With spring (hopefully) around the corner, we’re loving these bright and cheerful floral watercolor wedding invitations from J. Gregory of Grey Snail Press! This beautiful suite features illustrated florals inspired by the bride’s wedding flowers – including on the envelope liner! – and whimsical hand lettering. The pink and navy blue envelope colors are a fun added element and everything ties together in such a fun and festive way!

Bright and Cheerful Floral Watercolor Wedding Invitations by Grey Snail Press

From J Gregory: I’ve had the pleasure of knowing this sweet bride for several years, so I was thrilled when I was asked to create the wedding invitations for her wedding in the Smokey Mountains. Hannah is unfussy by nature and really down-to-earth. To say she was easy to work with is an understatement; she was completely open and flexible with the design, letting me take her ideas and run with them.

Bright and Cheerful Floral Watercolor Wedding Invitations by Grey Snail Press

She elected not to do a rustic or mountain-themed invitation suite, despite their mountain venue. Instead, she wanted something simple, that would include her wedding colors of navy and pink, with lovely, loose florals. I was immediately inspired to get out my watercolors (my new obsession) and start painting. I painted a variety of pink and blue flowers with greenery for the invitation itself, being careful to tie in the colors of her wedding palette. I chose different portions of the original floral design to carry over onto the other cards, focusing on smaller blue flowers for the rsvp card cascading off the top and sides of the card.

Bright and Cheerful Floral Watercolor Wedding Invitations by Grey Snail Press

All lettering was done by hand and kept very simple and clean with a mix of script and print. We chose to print all text in navy blue ink. Hannah even came up with her own creative wording for the invitation to make it special for them.

Bright and Cheerful Floral Watercolor Wedding Invitations by Grey Snail Press

Invitations and the corresponding rsvp and reception cards were all printed digitally on white 110lb. Classic Crest card stock, so they were nice and thick. The bright white provided the perfect background for the watercolor florals to really shine while keeping with the simplicity she desired.

Bright and Cheerful Floral Watercolor Wedding Invitations by Grey Snail Press

With a little input from her mom and sister, the bride chose a cotton candy pink outer envelope for the invitation and navy envelope for the rsvp card. She elected to include a matching floral envelope liner for the invitation envelope. I was so pleased when I discovered that because of the shape of the envelopes, we could actually get an additional envelope liner for the smaller rsvp envelope out of the scrap paper left over from the larger liner. What a bonus not to have any waste!

Bright and Cheerful Floral Watercolor Wedding Invitations by Grey Snail Press

Instead of having the rsvp envelopes calligraphed, we placed a rectangular return address label on the rsvp envelopes with some flowers peeking around the edges to complete the suite. This can be a fun way to save a little money in the budget. Plus, they’re super easy to assemble and completely customizable. It was truly a labor of love creating this suite for Hannah and Jason, and I really love how they turned out!
