Friday Happy Hour: Sunset Mai Tai

Nole and I decided to continue our exploration of Tiki drinks, which we began with the Coconut Milk Piña Colada, with that other quintessential Tiki drink: the Mai Tai. The Mai Tai is sweet and citrusy, with just a hint of exotic from the orgeat syrup and velvet falernum. We’ve also added a special twist that makes this sunset-inspired Mai Tai as beautiful as it is delicious. So mix one up and pretend – for just a moment – that you are on a beach far, far, far away from here. – Andrew

Sunset Mai Tai

1 oz Aged Rum
1 oz Clear Rum
1 oz Lime Juice
1/2 oz Triple Sec
1/2 oz Orgeat Syrup
1/2 oz Velvet Falernum
Grenadine
Angostura Bitters
Mint

Add a dash of grenadine and a few dashes of bitters to a cocktail glass. Fill it with crushed ice and set it aside. Combine the rum, lime juice, triple sec, orgeat syrup, and Velvet Falernum (which I’ve used before) in a shaker. Shake well with ice and strain, gently, into the ice-filled glass, being careful not to stir up the bitters and grenadine. Garnish with mint. Enjoy!

This isn’t the most authentic Mai Tai recipe out there. The original – invented at the most famous Tiki Bar of all time, Trader Vic’s, in 1944 – combined rum with lime, triple sec, orgeat, and rock candy syrup, a super-sweet version of simple syrup. No velvet falernum, no bitters, no grenadine. And that’s ok! The addition of the grenadine, balanced by the bitters, doesn’t do a whole lot to change the flavors of the drink. But what it does do is give this drink an amazing color gradient (as long as you pour gently!). It just looks so damn cool.

Two ingredients are worth talking about a little bit more. First, the weird but essential orgeat (pronounced “or-zha”– that “g” sounds a lot like the “j” in “bonjour”), a thick and sweet syrup flavored by almonds and rose or orange blossom water. Flavoring sweets with almonds is a practice that goes back thousands of years in the Middle East and Mediterranean, but we get the name from the French for “barley” (because, oddly, orgeat originated as a sweetened almond-and-barley concoction because, why not?). It definitely doesn’t bring to mind the islands of the Pacific but it definitely tastes exotic. You should be able to buy some at most good liquor stores but the homemade version is lightyears better.

Second, velvet falernum, a liqueur made in Barbados from rum, sugar cane syrup, lime juice, and plenty of spices – cloves, allspice, ginger, cinnamon, and maybe a hint of almond. It’s a deliciously complex Caribbean invention that’s not original to the Mai Tai, but will add a complex depth to the drink. I’ve also used Allspice Dram to great effect in a Mai Tai. So go forth and experiment.

{happy weekend!}

Happy August everyone! July flew by especially fast thanks to our trip to California and I’m having a hard time accepting that we’re more than halfway through summer! Luckily, August is my favorite month in DC – the college students are all back home and Congress is on recess, making the next few weeks the perfect time to go to museums, the zoo, or snag a table at a popular restaurant. I’m looking forward to making the most of these last few weeks of summer. But in the meantime…

DC Guide: Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens

I’ve lived in DC for more than 10 years, but we’re always finding new things to see and do. Our newest discovery is the Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens, a stunning oasis full of water lilies, gigantic lotus flowers, butterflies, frogs, and lots more – right in the middle of the city! It’s such a beautiful way to spend an afternoon, so I thought I’d share a few photos.

The Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens is almost directly across the Anacostia River from the National Arboretum (another of our favorite DC spots). Fun trivia for you: The Arboretum is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, while the Aquatic Gardens falls under the National Park Service. DC can be so weird! Anyway, we first heard about the Aquatic Gardens shortly after moving to Capitol Hill a few years ago, but we were suspicious because Kenilworth has a reputation for being one of DC’s more rough neighborhoods. We finally ventured over on a rainy Sunday afternoon last weekend, and were absolutely amazed by what we saw…

Acres and acres of giant lotus flowers! And so tall! I can’t even begin to describe these beauties. I was in complete awe.

We also saw lots of birds, frogs, turtles, dragonflies – and more butterflies than we could count! I did a little video on Instagram, which you can see here.

Our visit was pretty short – it started pouring down rain – so we mostly explored the ponds filled with lotus and water lilies, but there’s also a long boardwalk through the park wetlands. We’ll definitely be back again!

Neon “Glow” Theme Bat Mitzvah Invitations

These neon Bat Mitzvah invitations from designer Alexandra Bisono are just so much fun… I couldn’t resist them! The invitations reflect the “glow” theme for the reception following the ceremony, with a layer of glow sticks at the bottom of each hand-delivered box – and of course lots of bright neon. The rsvp card is my favorite part of the invitation suite; I love that Alexandra included a space for a hand written note below each response type. Such a nice detail in an age when teenagers are glued to their cell phones!

From Alexandra: This client wanted a very memorable invitation for her “glow” theme Bat Mitzvah. The idea was for each guest to receive a hand delivered box that, once opened, would glow from the inside. This was achieved with a few dozen glow sticks attached to the bottom of the box. Inside the box guests also found their RSVP cards to fill out with custom neon pens.
