Lauren + Daniel’s Historic Charleston Save the Dates

We’re on a hand painting roll these days! First Julie and Bo’s hand painted watercolor wedding invitations, and now these stunning save the dates from Studio R! The ladies of Studio R – Rachael, Megan, and Amanda Claire – created these save the dates for a wedding in the low country: Charleston, South Carolina. Inspired by Old Charleston charm, the save the dates feature a quatrefoil pattern belly band and hand painted map of Charleston. Love!

From Amanda Claire at Studio R: Our bride came to us inspired by the aesthetic charm of historic Charleston, South Carolina, where she and her fiancé Daniel were married. We took her inspiration and created a stacked, two-card save the date. The soft gray cards were wrapped in a pale blue belly band that included the couple’s monogram and a quatrefoil pattern to mimic shapes found in traditional Charleston architecture.

We used a local calligrapher’s hand lettering throughout the stationery, complimenting the hand painted elements of the Charleston map on the second insert card. The watercolor map orients guests to wedding weekend venues and accommodations. The subdued color palette of the inks and papers complements the coastal landscape of the city. Our fine art skills were showcased in this set with a custom watercolor painting, hand drawn map icons and hand lettering.

{happy weekend!}

Sigh. Week two of this ridiculous government shutdown. And the more I listen to the news, the angrier I get. So! Time for distractions! Last weekend, we hopped into the car for a spontaneous trip to the mountains. We were only gone for a couple of days, but it was nice to get away from DC – and even more nice to see some real fall foliage. And this weekend, Paper Camp is in DC! I’m so excited to see some of my fellow panelists and meet the new students! But in the meantime…

Peter + Kristy’s Rustic Letterpress Wedding Invitations

You may remember Peter and Kristy’s fantastic die cut save the dates from back in March – and today Peter is back to share the wedding invitations! Peter and Kristy wanted to honor the rustic and romantic feel of their barn wedding venue. They opted for blue and white wedding invitations letterpress printed by Twig & Fig, along with kraft paper and rubber stamp accents. I love the way the entire suite came together!

From Peter: We went for a rustic but fun look: the wedding was at a winery with a rustic red barn and we wanted to capture the old fashioned but romantic look. We had a lot of fun playing around with fonts and different ways to give the text depth. We’re just really happy with how they turned out and that we were able to do most of the work ourselves.

The main invitation was letterpress printed at Twig & Fig on 220lb letterpress paper. The RSVP, map, rehearsal dinner invitation, and envelopes were printed at home on kraft paper and 110lb letterpress paper.

We made our own belly bands and stamped them with a custom stamp and then tied it all together with navy and white butchers twine.  My mother had a shoe box full of old unused postage so we got to be creative with stamps as well. We used rubber number stamps on the RSVP card to indicate how many seats we had reserved for each party.

DIY Tutorial: Modern Banner Tri-Fold Save the Date

It can be a challenge to fit all of the necessary information into your save the date or wedding invitations. Hotels, directions, maps and websites can weigh down your envelope and easily distract guests from the main message. Today’s tutorial is the perfect solution to the headache… and couldn’t be simpler! Using one letter size piece of paper, we’ve created a tri-fold save the date that’s fun, modern and informational. – Bailey and Emma of Antiquaria

Step One: Cut your 8.5″ x 11″ piece of kraft card stock into cards sized at 5″ x 10.5″

Step Two: Once cut, you will want to make score marks every 3.5 inches using a bone folder and scoreboard tool. Do not fold the card yet!

Step Three: While the card is scored but still flat, stamp your monogram (we used our Modern Arrow Monogram Stamp, No.2), centering on the first third (the one on the left). Repeat with your save the date stamp (we used our Modern Banner Save the Date Stamp) in the center and your accommodations stamp (we used our Modern Banner Accommodations Stamp, No.2) in on the right-hand side. To make a stamped print, ink your stamp thoroughly and center it over your card. Once it is positioned correctly, press down to make a print. Use both hands to ensure even pressure. Lift off and let the print dry. For a step-by-step video tutorial about this printing process go here.

Step Four: Now you can fold your card! Carefully bend along score marks and use a bone folder to make certain the folds are crisp.

Step Five: Adding a printed liner is a great way to add color and pattern to your Save the Date design. To make the liner, trace the template onto your printed paper (we used our “Geo” Patterned Paper in text weight) and cut it out with scissors. To install, simply use stick glue or double sided tape to adhere them into your envelope.

Step Six: Next, you will stamp your return address on the back flap of your 4bar envelope using the same technique for printing as in step three. We used our Scripted Return Address Stamp for this design.

Step Seven: Now all that’s left is to tie the trifold design with twine, address the envelopes, add postage and send them on their way!

Happy and Gay Letterpress Wedding Invitations

We’re back! Ladyfingers Letterpress here, reporting today on a subject very near and dear to us. As some of you may already know, our company is owned and operated by two ladies, Arley-Rose and Morgan, who wed in Massachusetts in 2011. We have always taken marriage equality very seriously, making donations to equality efforts for every invitation suite ordered since we started our business in 2011. On June 26, the Supreme Court voted DOMA as unconstitutional and gave same-sex couples access to 1138 rights that were previously denied to them. We’ve always proudly worked with same-sex couples and are excited to share some of our favorite invitations with you today. –Arley-Rose and Morgan of Ladyfingers Letterpress

Jeremy and Joe’s Mexican Fiesta Wedding

Jeremy and Joe's Mexican Fiesta Wedding

These guys are good friends of ours – Jeremy is a talented type designer (I designed a typeface thanks to him!) and Joe is an amazing playwright. They selected a hidden gem in Mexico to wed and wanted an invitation suite to reflect the culture and fun their guests are about to have. They sent us colorful and vibrant images of Mexican hand-lettering that appears on storefronts and signage, as well as old broadsides that advertise Mexican wrestling matches.

Jeremy and Joe's Mexican Fiesta Wedding

After some deliberation, they decided they wanted to create an invitation that resembled a wrestling match featuring Lucy, their “El Bulldog Francés” as the headliner. We letterpress printed a full bleed rainbow roll flat, with a black letterpress layer on top. The invitations were two sided, with a step-by-step story illustrating the exciting journey that lies ahead to their destination wedding.

The invitations were then rolled and sealed with a red sleeve with the words “Vamos a Celebrar!” letterpress printed on it. What did we do with the invitations next? Well, hide them inside a piñata, of course! The “miñatas” were then placed in a box and shipped off to their small list of friends and family!

Lauren & LaQuet’s Interactive Invite

Lauren & LaQuet's Interactive Invite

When we were first approached by these fabulous and outgoing ladies, we knew their invitations would be totally fun. LaQuet is a Broadway star and Lauren is a TV producer, so naturally their invitations would have to reflect some element of performance! Their wedding website was amazing, with videos of them speaking to the viewer on nearly every page. When they received their save the dates, they recorded their reactions and sent them to us. So adorable!

Lauren & LaQuet's Interactive Invite

Their save the dates were designed to resemble old Motown and ’60s Soul posters, featuring a three-color letterpress print on an oversize poster and shipped in a large kraft paper envelope.

For their invitations, we created illustrations of the couple and letterpress printed them on kraft paper. The ladies were then laser cut and placed through a slit in the invite, which was designed to look like an old school record player. The result was an irresistible urge to make the ladies dance together, getting this party started early!

Liz & Janis’s Cuban Social Club Invitations

This was another friend couple of ours, so naturally we were psyched to help them out with a set of invitations! Their wedding took place at an amazing Cuban restaurant in Brooklyn, so we aimed to create a suite that reflected their artsy taste, their love of travel and the Cuban flair of their venue. We used a brush lettering for their script and paired the letterpress chip board invites with actual maps that were torn out of an atlas and individually die cut into an envelope shape.

Liz and Janis's Cuban Revolution

We created two sets of invites for them since their wedding had two rounds of guests: An earlier crowd who would enjoy the ceremony and dinner, and a rowdier bunch arriving later for dancing, revelry and drinks.
