Hand-Lettering with Ladyfingers Letterpress

Greetings! It is an honor and a pleasure to be guest blogging on our most favoritest blog in the world for the next few days! We were thrilled when we were asked to create Sophie’s birth announcements, and are psyched to share with you more unique and curious work from the minds and hands of Ladyfingers Letterpress! â€“Arley-Rose and Morgan of Ladyfingers Letterpress

If you are familiar with our work, you know that we are all about blurring the lines between stationery and “whoaa!?”. We’re a bit crazy about coming up with new and exciting ways in which your guests receive your big announcement. When the right clients come along who are as excited about doing something different as we are, get ready for the unexpected. Piñatas stuffed with an invitation? Sure! Little cutouts of the couple who can dance and move on top of a record player? Why not! Full letterpress rainbow roll knocked-out flats? It can be done! There is no task to large nor too complex for our inquisitive brains. Challenges keep us going. Conformity kills our spirit. And ice cream is always on our minds.

Another thing you may recognize about our work is the abundance of hand-lettering. Our obsession began back in the early 2000s when Arley-Rose was using it to rebel against the rigidity of the type world that was prevalent during her time studying at Parsons. Now, its easier and faster for her to draw letters than use design programs to create a layout, and her trademark handiwork has become one of the most identifying features about our work.

In our first post as guest bloggers, we’d like to introduce ourselves in this short clip where we give you a short and informal tour of our studio, and take you along as we hand-letter a real life invitation! (Pardon the absence of Morgan, the other mastermind behind Ladyfingers. She was out running errands when we recorded this!)

Interested in getting started with hand-lettering? Here are some tips to create your own illustrative voice using the most valuable design software ever: your hands, your brain, and a pen & paper:

• Materials: I like using Micron .08 or .05 pens and standard sketchbook paper. I don’t usually do a pencil sketch first, since I find that I lose the initial gesture of the design if I am tracing over existing line work. (If you feel more comfortable creating a layout in pencil and tracing in ink, be sure to draw lightly or your ink lines may become compromised when you’re erasing your pencil lines. Feel free to also use a lightbox to trace!)

• How does your message sound? Before you start, consider the tone or the voice of your piece. Is it formal? Fun and exciting? Remember that when people read text, they put it in a voice. (Or maybe that’s just me?) Do you want your lettering to sound like its being spoken by Vincent Price or a little kid on a trampoline? Or maybe just you, being really excited, and happy to share your joyful message with your most favorite people in the world? Don’t be ashamed to show how psyched you are! Your excitement will translate into a beautiful piece.

• Put some music on! I find that music and lettering have a lot in common. Not only do they both share a rhythm that can inspire people to keep reading/listening, but in the same way that you don’t have to listen to a song very long to know if its a somber song or a happy song, a nice piece of hand lettering should hit you with an expression as soon as you see it. You don’t wait till the last note to understand the essence of a song, so why should you have to wait til the last word to understand the message of a design?

• Practice, practice, practice! There is no app for this. There is no photoshop filter that will make your lettering look better. If you want to truly get better at hand-lettering, do it every day and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Your hand and arm muscles will get used to drawing letters and it will become easier. Start with mastering one lettering style, whether its Roman, Script or Sans Serif. Need inspiration? Check out the different type styles on MyFonts.com. Once you have your favorite lettering style down pat, introduce a contrasting style. For example, I love combining script with a serif face.

• Draw other things, too! We wouldn’t be where we are today if it weren’t for a lifetime of drawing. To be a good letterer, you need to be comfortable with your pen enough to be free with it. Gotta know the rules before you can break ’em! Controlled chaos, that’s really what lettering is!

Once my drawings are finished, I scan them into the computer at high resolution. Sometimes I’ll clean up little errors in Photoshop and then drop them into Illustrator. I have a specific profile set up under Live Trace  so that my drawings come out crisp and un-live-tracey. Once they’ve been vectorized, I can move letters around and play with the design a little. Sometimes if I am drawing and I don’t like a letter or word that I just drew, I’ll draw another off to the side and move it in when I’m in Illustrator. The key is to have fun! Cuz if it ain’t fun, why do it?

Hillary + Chris’s Illustrated Nautical Wedding Invitations

Nautical motifs are some of the most versatile design elements – they can be dressed up in classic navy and white or become more playful in a whimsical illustrated design. I couldn’t resist sharing these nautical wedding invitations and save the dates spotted over on the Quill & Fox. The illustrations and nautical flags are just too much fun!

From Yas: The couple share a love for traveling and having fun — which is a perfect thing to embody for this set. We wanted to make a strong early statement for the save the date, using iconic nautical imagery and an illustrated whale that’s slightly reminiscent of the old style book illustrations.

The invitation set includes a large map of Martha’s Vineyard, along with specific information about the wedding venue and other important guest instructions. The contents were laid out to mimic a playful interpretation of a captain’s map.

Brynne + Guy’s Natural Vineyard Save the Dates

I always like to end the week on a happy note, and what could be happier than these beautiful save the dates for a vineyard wedding? Created by Brynne from Harken Press for her own upcoming wedding, the save the dates feature a map of the wedding location and a custom gold wax seal. So pretty!

From Brynne: It can be daunting to be a stationery designer working on your own wedding stationery, but it can be even more of a challenge when both the bride and groom are designers. Guy and I wanted our save the dates to be unique and textural for our nature-inspired vineyard wedding. We also wanted to add fun accents, like our custom wax seal, photo magnet, photo corners and vintage map envelope liners to highlight the location.

The venue in southern California was the main inspiration. The vineyard is in Temecula Valley wine country which is a rural paradise with beautiful rolling hills and acres of lush vines. Hot air ballooning is a popular attraction in the area, so we used the symbol discreetly under the photo magnet. I can’t wait to take a romantic hot air balloon ride before the wedding!

Sarah + Ben’s Summer Camp-Inspired Wedding Invitations

These invitations from Samantha and Whitney of Gus & Ruby Letterpress were created for a summer wedding at a summer camp on a lake in New Hampshire – which in cold and dreary early spring pretty much sounds like the best idea in the whole world! Since the wedding festivities stretched over a whole weekend, the invitation suite included lots of fun extras for wedding guests, from a custom illustrated map and schedule of activities to signs, menus, and tags for the day of the wedding, all letterpress printed on thick cotton paper. So awesome!

From Samantha and Whitney: This custom suite was designed for a lovely couple getting married at a summer camp situated on an island in Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. The couple wanted their stationery to reflect their love of the camp (where the bride’s family had summered for years!) and the great outdoors while also giving guests a hint at all the fun activities they had planned for the wedding weekend.

When guests arrived on the island for the wedding weekend, each received a custom letterpress printed folio with their names and bunk assignment calligraphed on the front. A custom illustrated map and legend was placed inside each folio, along with waterfall inserts of information pointed guests in the right direction for the various events.

A clean and simple save the date featuring a belly band printed with a birch bark texture and custom seal set the tone while the primary suite featured custom illustrations depicting the camp and camp activities both in a palette of woodsy greens and natural browns. Hand-writing-inspired sans serif typeface mixed with a breezy script and classic roman font all helped to convey the elegant beauty of the outdoor venue while still having a natural, effortless feel.

Each invitation was mounted onto a solid green backing paper and then again onto an extra thick 100% cotton card letterpress printed with a pattern of hand-drawn trees. The duplexing gave the piece luxurious weight and an extra sturdy in-hand feel. All the pieces were lovingly letterpress printed by hand on our antique press (c. 1913) on beautiful, textural, super thick 100% cotton paper. The custom illustration was done by our talented friends at Brainstorm and calligraphy by the amazing Lindsay Letters.

A double-sided schedule of events card featured more custom illustration showcasing the fun camp events taking place. All pieces in the main invitation suite were stacked and tied together with a very fine jute twine to create a little bundle for guests to pull out of the envelope. A fun chevron envelope jazzed up the kraft envelope that each invitation suite was mailed in.

In each bunk, guests received welcome bags complete with letterpress tags and even water bottles featuring custom labels! At the wedding ceremony and reception, coordinating letterpress programs, escort cards, buffet signage, menus, and favor tags kept all event stationery and paper goods feeling cohesive.

Natalie + Paul’s Southern Magnolia Wedding Invitations

We had the most gorgeous weekend here in DC, and with spring just around the corner these magnolia wedding invitations from Brynne at Harken Press seem like the perfect way to start off the week! Created for a spring wedding in Baton Rouge, Brynne drew her inspiration from both the season and the wedding venue, with a sunny yellow color palette and beautiful vintage stamps.

Magnolia Wedding Invitations by Harken Press via Oh So Beautiful Paper (8)

From Brynne: Natalie and Paul are getting married this spring at a charming southern plantation called Magnolia Mound in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The magnolia blossom reoccurs throughout their wedding stationery as a symbol of spring and the venue. I really wanted to capture Natalie and Paul’s creative personalities and the mood of their quaint outdoor southern wedding. My inspiration was Gone With The Wind meets happy spring colors.

Natalie and Paul both have Masters degrees in historical preservation from the College of Charleston in South Carolina, where they met. The vintage stamps that Natalie collected for the postage are a perfect combination of Louisiana and South Carolina landmarks, as well as the couple’s love of architecture and literature. One of their favorite quotes, “Be silly, be honest, be kind.” by Ralph Waldo Emerson is attached to the twine that holds the suite together. I also illustrated the map of Baton Rouge to highlight some of the unique parts of the city, and of course the wedding venue.

The wedding invitation was letterpress printed, while the rest of the suite and save the dates were digitally printed. A great compromise for letterpress lovers on a budget!
