Happy Weekend!

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! I hope you’re able to spend time with your special people this weekend! We got a few more inches of snow here in DC on Wednesday night and are expected to get even more this weekend, so we’re hunkered down for a quiet weekend at home. Is it spring yet?? Sigh. But in the meantime…

Calligraphy Inspiration: Blue Eye Brown Eye

Love must be in the air as I recently fell head over heels when I came across the work of Blue Eye Brown Eye‘s Lauren Essl. A designer and calligrapher, Lauren’s portfolio of work is as impressive as it is beautiful. Her pitch perfect invitation design and calligraphy turns something as everyday as a paper and envelopes into a beloved keepsake. Her blog is filled with stunning peeks of her work along with tips and resources for the beginning calligraphers. She’s also sharing her talent with the world through calligraphy classes!  – Julie

I really love how Lauren utilizes space; corners and flaps are filled with ribbons of ink and creates a nice balance for a colorful array of stamps.

Hello Brick & Mortar: Real Customers, Love Multiplies Love

In early February of 2005, I stood in line at a post office in Washington, DC with a stack of envelopes sandwiched between my hands and my chin. The lady in front of me turned and said “Well, don’t you have a lot of sweethearts!” It made me ineffably happy. It was the end of my third year of law school and I was doing fine, in the sense that your third year is your last year. But I had spent a week on my floor making 50+ valentines with the sneaking suspicion about happiness and where I might find it. The moral of this story is: I am a ridiculous fan of Valentine’s Day and it comes as a surprise to absolutely no one that I’m no longer practicing law. – Emily of Clementine

Sarah + Alan’s Modern Toile Wedding Invitations

I love toile. Really really love. So I was thrilled when Erin at Lucky Luxe sent over these beautiful wedding invitations with a modern take on classic toile! The custom toile pattern is made from vintage engravings and was inspired by 18th century French toile textiles. Erin paired bright persimmon ink with classic black and white and mixed whimsical lettering with traditional serif text – all with incredibly chic results!

From Erin: To make the toile pattern for the invitation, we pieced together several vintage engravings of beautiful outdoor scenery and florals, and I was tickled to death to find the sweet couple taking a stroll deep in our bag of tricks.

French toile is typically printed in red, black, or blue, but we wanted to take this toile down a different aesthetic path. By combining it with quirky hand drawn lettering and a small, traditional serif, it just felt right to print in punchy persimmon ink with black text. The bride is a fashion maven and the bold color pairing looks like her wardrobe — another inspiration for the outdoor event.

Jen’s Nautical Baby Shower Invitations

How cute are these nautical baby shower invitations from Kim at Bright Room Studio? Created for Kim’s childhood friend Jen, the invitations combine a sweet anchor pattern, blue and mint color palette, and the sweetest greeting: Ahoy, it’s a boy!

From Kim: Jen is one of my best friends from high school so I was absolutely honored to create her baby shower invitation for her! The shower was thrown at her uncle’s seafood restaurant so a nautical theme was a no-brainer. And “Ahoy, it’s a boy!” was just too cute to pass up!

Even though the invitation was for a baby shower, I wanted the design to be sophisticated. The blue-gray and mint color palette and subtle rope and anchor details were the perfect way to keep it masculine, preppy, and classic.

My favorite detail was the anchor pattern on the back. The mint anchors represent their new family, with a little baby anchor next to the “mom” and “dad” anchors.
