Blakely + Matthew’s Glamorous Art Deco Wedding Invitations

These black, white, and gold foil wedding invitations from Carina Skrobecki Design and Lizzy Showman practically scream glamour! Carina drew inspiration from the wedding venue (and black tie formal style) to create this stunning Art Deco-inspired invitation suite. I love that Carina mixed flat printing (for the black and white elements) and gold foil – and the gold thread is the perfect finishing touch!

From Carina: Blakely and Matthew were an absolute joy to work with and together we created some of my favorite pieces to date. The two of them are getting married next month at the Arctic Club in Seattle, a landmark hotel from the early 1900s that was an exclusive club for men who struck it rich in the Alaskan gold rush (circa 1917). The building is beautifully ornate and the wedding itself will be a glamorous and formal affair, so we worked hard to have the invitations be the grand preview.

Each piece was printed offset in 100% black onto Ecru Crane Letra and then kissed with gold foil. We used patterns and borders to cue an Art Deco style, but also kept it fresh with clean, yet slightly era-inspired typefaces. Each suite included a main invitation with gold shimmer lined black envelopes — complete with gold calligraphy — a reply card and gold-stamped reply envelopes, and an accommodations card all wrapped together with a delicate gold thread.

Audrey + Erik’s Gingham Letterpress Overprint Wedding Invitations

Happy Monday everyone! Today we move into our new house, and I’m both incredibly excited and terribly anxious to put this whole move behind us (fingers crossed that we’ll have internet at our new place later tonight)! While we pack the final boxes and move our furniture, I have a couple of really gorgeous wedding invitations to share with you. First up, some gorgeous invitations from Sarah of Studio SloMo that incorporate one of my favorite letterpress techniques – overprinting – to create a colorful gingham pattern for a casual Fourth of July wedding. Love!

From Sarah: We designed these invitations for Audrey and Erik’s casual July 4th wedding at a local park in Carmel Valley, California. The only guidelines Audrey gave us were to use bright colors and possibly incorporate gingham. Audrey and Erik were planning a BBQ in the park after the ceremony and using all gingham tablecloths.

Audrey also made strawberry jam with gingham jar tops for wedding favors. We created the thank you tags to tie around the top of the jam jar lids.  In keeping with the casual theme, they opted for a small folded RSVP tag tied to the invite directing guests to email their reply + check out their wedding website. Our favorite part of this invitation suite ended up being the little heart inspired by the gingham pattern.

Friday Happy Hour: The Pimm’s Cup

The Pimm’s Cup is a sweet and spicy and herbaceous drink, a complex cocktail with lots of flavors crashing around all at once in a way that shouldn’t really work but totally does. This drink, an import from England, is most properly a summer drink, but since English summers are on par with DC springs, go ahead and knock one back this weekend. – Andrew

Pimm’s Cup

2 oz Pimm’s No 1
3/4 oz. Cointreau
3/4 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
3-4 Cucumber Slices
1 Bunch Mint
Lemonade

Combine the Pimm’s, Cointreau, and lime juice in a highball glass filled with ice. Add the cucumber slices and mint (or berries and citrus wheels or pretty much whatever else you want, this can be a real smorgasbord of a drink). Top with lemonade – in this case, the British-style carbonated lemon-lime soda type of lemonade – or some ginger beer for a richer, spicier Pimm’s Cup. Enjoy!

Pimm’s No. 1 – invented by Englishman James Pimm back in 1823 – is essentially a gin-based cocktail in a bottle, though it’s marketed as a liqueur. Its recipe remains, to my knowledge, a trade secret, though there are all sorts of herbs, fruits, and spices involved. It has a bittersweet and very herbal flavor that makes it a great addition to cocktails but not particularly tasty on its own.

Sometime after Pimm started mixing up his No. 1 Cup, some other Englishman (or Englishwoman) had the great idea of further mixing Pimm’s with some lemonade and a whole bunch of fruit and the Pimm’s Cup, England’s favorite summer cocktail, was born. There’s no one Pimm’s Cup recipe out there, and lots of permutations to play with (I borrowed this one, one of my favorites, from the Employees Only bar in NYC), so experiment!

{happy weekend!}

You guys! Today is the big day! We’re off to meet with our agent for the closing, and after that we’ll officially be homeowners! And between the craziness of packing, some last minute shenanigans from the title company (ugh), and a million other things, I’m kind of amazed that we got through this week at all. We have just a couple more days of packing left, then we move in on Monday! Luckily my in-laws are coming down to help this weekend, followed by my dad early next week. Wish us luck with the move – we’ll definitely need it! But in the meantime…

Hello Spring

…a few links for your weekend!

This week on Oh So Beautiful Paper:

A big welcome to the newest members of the Designer Rolodex!

We have a fun cocktail coming up for you this afternoon, so check back a bit later for the recipe!  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll see you back here on Monday!  xoxo

Quick Pick: “A Year of Lettering” Project

I completely lack the discipline for any hobby or project that requires me to do a specific activity once a day, so I’m in complete awe of the “Year of Lettering” project undertaken by Kelly Cummings of Spindle Photography. Kelly is a wedding photographer with a talent for calligraphy, so this year she decided to start a Tumblr to explore different styles and further develop her technique. A selection of Kelly’s favorites from the project are available as prints on Etsy and her Society6 shop!

From Kelly: I am a full time wedding photographer and started dabbling in calligraphy for client packaging and my logo, until I finally took a class in copperplate this past August. I’ve always wanted to be dedicated enough for some kind of year long project but a photo a day felt too much like work, so lettering has been an awesome way to explore different styles and typography as well, but in my free time at night. I’ve taken on a few custom projects as well, but mostly I love keeping lettering as a fun hobby. I’m really pleasantly surprised at the following the tumblr has gained, and I post some of my process on instagram as well which people seem to really enjoy.
