Quick Pick: “A Year of Lettering” Project

I completely lack the discipline for any hobby or project that requires me to do a specific activity once a day, so I’m in complete awe of the “Year of Lettering” project undertaken by Kelly Cummings of Spindle Photography. Kelly is a wedding photographer with a talent for calligraphy, so this year she decided to start a Tumblr to explore different styles and further develop her technique. A selection of Kelly’s favorites from the project are available as prints on Etsy and her Society6 shop!

From Kelly: I am a full time wedding photographer and started dabbling in calligraphy for client packaging and my logo, until I finally took a class in copperplate this past August. I’ve always wanted to be dedicated enough for some kind of year long project but a photo a day felt too much like work, so lettering has been an awesome way to explore different styles and typography as well, but in my free time at night. I’ve taken on a few custom projects as well, but mostly I love keeping lettering as a fun hobby. I’m really pleasantly surprised at the following the tumblr has gained, and I post some of my process on instagram as well which people seem to really enjoy.

  1. Inspiring! I really want to take up letting. Does anyone have advice for a girl just starting out? Where is the best place to learn? My email address is [email protected] . It’d be great to hear from you! I figure I’ll start by notebook doodling and later scanning and tracing with the pen tool. Another thing: I am quite intrigued by chalk work, like that of Rajiv Surendra. Google search “Lettersinink” … He is actually the guy who played the mathlete rapper in Mean Girls (!!) and he has this amazing talent for calligraphy and lettering! Who’d have known! Anyway, thanks for posting. Please get in touch if anyone reading this has any tips!

  2. Thank you so so much for sharing my project! This is the first thing I’ve loved enough to do everyday (at least so far, I’m 80-some days in!), but maybe this means lettering is for me what cooking was for Julia Child (because cooking certainly isn’t it for me!).

Also, for anyone curious about getting into lettering I’m happy to answer questions on my tumblr and I try to share tips and resources as well!
