Turcan + Ev’s Formal and Elegant Black + White Wedding Invitations

Turcan and Ev wanted classic wedding invitations with a few bold yet sophisticated elements.  They worked with Sarah from The Happy Envelope, who created a stunning black and white invitation design.  The entire suite was letterpress printed on super-thick paper, with a vintage rose illustration on the reverse side and cobalt blue edge painting.  So pretty!

From Sarah: Turcan + Ev had a church wedding followed by a reception at the bride’s aunt’s private residence in Maryland.  The couple wanted something stunning, but still classic in tone.  Their wedding colors were black and white with cobalt blue accents. We decided to letterpress print everything on super thick 4-ply board so that we could paint the edge with a bright pop of their blue as a fun surprise.

The reverse side of the invitation was letterpress printed in black ink with a vintage rose botanical illustration.  The custom printed liner on the inner envelope was also cobalt blue for that extra “wow!” factor.  The bride wanted the reception card to really sing and stand on its own, so we letterpress printed it in two inks, utilizing her cobalt blue for a bit of visual pop.  Calligraphy by Feast Fine Art + Calligraphy sealed the deal!

Nicole + Chris’s Modern Travel-Inspired Wedding Invitations

Happy Monday everyone!  We’re starting the week off with these modern travel-inspired wedding invitations from recent bride Nicole Parker King.  Nicole previously worked as a Creative Director for L’Oreal before moving to India with her diplomat husband, so it’s no surprise that she knew exactly what she was doing when it came time to design her own wedding invitations.  Nicole combined travel elements like tickets and a passport wedding itinerary with rustic details inspired by the wedding venue – a family property in New Hampshire.

From Nicole: I met Chris, an Australian diplomat, in New York in 2009.  We dated internationally for a year – meeting up in Paris, Geneva, London, Ireland, Turkey, Australia, and Santa Barbara – before getting engaged in 2010.  I knew I definitely wanted to incorporate a travel theme in both the wedding invitation and the wedding itself.

We were married on Labor Day Weekend 2011 at my uncle’s property, Lakefalls, in New Hampshire.  The property has been in our family since before I was born and has great significance for me.  My goal for the design was to combine travel elements (in the form of the tickets, passport, and airplane details) while still playing up the beautiful location and getting guests excited about the “wedding weekend in the woods.”

The heart of the property is Lakefalls Lodge, but the property has many other buildings and areas.  I designed a map that included driving directions to the property but also gave guests a sense of the different places that various events would take place over the course of the weekend.

We also included a “passport” that functioned as the schedule of events for the weekend, which included lawn games the day before and a New England-style lobster bake in a meadow on the property.

I designed post cards that were used both as escort cards at the rehearsal dinner and in lieu of a guest book at the wedding.  The “Aussies Invade” theme was due to the fact 60+ Australians descended upon New Hampshire for the weekend!

Friday Happy Hour: Watermelon Mojito

It’s summer – which means outdoor picnics, BBQs, and of course lots and lots of watermelon (easily one of our favorite summer fruits) and lots of mint.  So if you’re in the mood for something classic to beat the heat, try a twist on one of Ernest Hemingway’s favorite drinks, a Watermelon Mojito.  Fresh, cold, sweet, citrusy, minty and delicious, the Mojito is the perfect drink for a sweltering summer evening. – Andrew

Read below for the full recipe!

Watermelon Mojito

2 oz Light Rum
3/4 oz Simple Syrup
1 oz Lime Juice
Sparkling Water
Watermelon Juice to Taste
Handful of Mint Leaves

First: if you have any pre-made Mojito mix in your house, that overly sweet artificial stuff, throw it out.  Do it now!  Did you do it?  Ok, good.  Now, in a highball glass, very gently muddle the mint and syrup.  Add the lime juice.  (Some recipes tell you to muddle the lime in the glass and leave the lime shell; freshly squeezed juice definitely is best, but there’s already so much going on in this drink that I recommend discarding the lime shell.)  Fill the glass with lots of crushed ice, then add the rum.  For a classic Mojito, skip the next step, but for a Watermelon Mojito, add some freshly muddled or squeezed watermelon juice.  Top with sparkling water, garnish with a mint sprig, sugar cane or even a cube of watermelon, and enjoy.

The Mojito is a Cuban highball, another one of those drinks that evolved organically out of the country’s citrus and sugar cultivation, like the Daiquiri.  The closest you’ll get to the original flavor of a Cuban Mojito is probably using Bacardi light rum; before the Cuban Revolution drove Bacardi to Puerto Rico, Bacardi was one of Cuba’s biggest distillers.  A classic Mojito is rum, sugar, mint, and lime, but the Mojito is a lot like another drink, the Caipirinha, in that you can play around with the original recipe to create all kinds of variants, using whatever fruit you like.

No one really knows the origins of the Mojito.  A romantic story has it descending from a very old drink, the Draque, a drink supposedly invented by Sir Francis Drake in the 1500s with aguardiente (a really primitive version of rum), sugar, mint, and lime (the last three included mostly to hide the taste fo the aguardiente).  It’s possible, but it’s more likely that Cubans figured out for themselves over the years that they could combine all the lime, sugar, and rum they were producing into some really tasty drinks.  Does it matter?  Not really – the Mojito is too delicious.

P.S.  If you make one of these, you can see how much work goes into one of these.  Make sure to tip your bartender well the next time you order one, and make sure the bar isn’t very crowded when you do order one, or else you might not get the best Mojito…

{happy weekend!}

Happy Friday everyone!  This week practically flew by for me – but we’ve been keeping busy behind the scenes with lots of baby-related projects, some of which I hope to share here soon!  I finally started to feel tiny baby kicks a couple of weeks ago and they’ve been getting stronger ever since; it’s still so funny to look down and see my belly actually move from a particularly strong kick!  This weekend I’m looking forward to a movie date with friends and picking a paint color for the nursery.  But in the meantime…

As usual, we have a fun cocktail coming up for you this afternoon, so check back a bit later for the recipe!  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll see you back here on Monday!  xoxo

Quilled and Framed Wedding Invitation by Ann Martin

If you’re like me and absolutely love your wedding invitations, you’ll want to find a way of displaying them long after the ceremony.  A thoughtful wedding guest commissioned paper filigree (aka quilling) artist Ann Martin to create a quilled frame around the invitation as a wedding gift for the couple.  Such a fantastic idea!

From Ann: A recent client commissioned a quilled and framed wedding invitation as a wedding gift for the couple.  The invitation was a square charcoal gray Vera Wang invitation – very elegant.  All of the scrollwork was done in white with a few touches of silver-edged white.
