Nancy + Guy’s Modern Navy and White Wedding Invitations

It’s so fun to see designers expand their horizons with each new project.  Virginia and Mishayla of Plane Paper specialize in laser-cut greeting cards and stationery, but recently took on a custom wedding invitation design project.  They created a modern chevron-inspired design for both the invitation and laser-cut envelope, partnering with their studiomate Repeat Press to letterpress print the invitation suite.

From Virginia and Mishayla: Nancy and Guy wanted a wedding suite that would remain timeless, yet have a modern edge.  We combined a bold, graphic chevron pattern with a serif font and traditional wording – all in classic navy blue.

We designed a laser-cut envelope, our signature element, again incorporating the chevron pattern.  The envelope was tied with a letterpress tag with the reception location and wedding website.  Yellow baker’s twine added a pop of summer color and sense of playfulness to the suite.

We also designed ‘day-of’ elements, specifically flags wrapped around yellow and white paper straws.  Both the flag and tag used the ‘v’ of the chevron to allude to their respective, familiar silhouettes.

Rachael + Brian’s Woodland and Fabric Wedding Invitations

Kraft paper and white ink is such a fabulous combination – perfect for a variety of design styles from modern to rustic.  Designer Rachael Ward decided to combine kraft paper, white ink screen printing, and fabric for her woodland wedding invitations.  So pretty!

From Rachael: As a graphic designer and crafter, I knew I wanted to design something that incorporated fabric and gave our guests a peek into our wedding style.  Inspiration came mostly from the location of the wedding, Krippendorf Lodge located within the Cincinnati Nature Center at Rowe Woods.

The overall wedding theme was a combination of vintage and woodland styles.  The color palette was loosely based on robins egg blue, blush pink, ivory, and brown.  The invitations were screen printed using white ink on French Paper‘s 100 lb Speckletone Cover in Kraft.  Then they were wrapped with either a blue or pink floral fabric from Joann Fabric to match the color palette.  A reply card was tied around each card with a coordinating ribbon.

These romantic, vintage, and woodsy invites were perfect for our small wedding.  The combination of paper and fabric made quite an impact on our guests!

Janna + Brian’s Vintage-Inspired Wedding Stationery

For Janna and Brian’s wedding stationery, Melissa and Amy from Atheneum Creative incorporated a postcard save the date and fold-out poster wedding invitation – all with a vintage look inspired in large part by the architecture of the wedding venue.  Melissa and Amy also created some really fun day-of stationery details, from ceremony programs to menus!

From Melissa + Amy: When Janna and Brian told us that they were getting married at Villa Del Largo in Austin – a place full of gorgeous arches – we knew that we wanted the venue’s architectural elements to resonate in the design.  We decided to pull those arches into a wedding logo and incorporate the logo throughout the invitations and day-of materials.

Janna and Brian asked us to create a vintage look and feel for their wedding.  We knew that the couple wanted to send out a postcard for their save the date, so we wanted to give the typography the vintage feel in addition to the photo on the front of the postcard.

For the invitation, Janna and Brian wanted to do something really different – and since almost all the guests are from out of town, what better way to highlight the Texas wedding venue than with a large fold-out poster invitation?  We created each panel to reveal more information, including an rsvp postcard.

We also created several day-of elements, including welcome baskets, place cards and escort cards, menus, ceremony programs, and signs.  The ceremony programs doubled as fans to keep guests cool during the outdoor ceremony.

Janna and Brian used one very long table for their guests; two large chalkboard signs in vintage frames directed guests to their seats, while kraft paper place card tags were tied around each silverware setting.  We screen printed the menus directly onto the linen napkins.

Their welcome basket included an accordion fold welcome letter along with custom drink koozies featuring the wedding logo, hang tags for soda, and even a recipe of grandma’s strawberry bread.

Denise + Jack’s Modern Yellow Wedding Invitations

I love starting the week with something bright and colorful, so I was thrilled when Lisa from Good on Paper sent over these sunny yellow wedding invitations that she designed for a recent couple.  The couple wanted something light and fun, so Lisa created cute little illustrations representing some of their favorite things and places.  Such a great idea!

From Lisa: I designed this custom wedding invitation and rsvp postcard for a super cute and quirky couple, Jack and Denise.  They don’t take themselves too seriously and wanted that to be reflected in the wedding, an informal party at the Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastopol, California.  I was inspired by a random list of all the things they liked individually and as a couple to depict these things as little illustrations on the invitations.

With a palette of sunny yellow, gray, and ochre, some of the illustrations included the San Francisco Mint (where Jack proposed), a jackalope (Denise’s nickname for Jack), a polar bear (Denise’s favorite animal), a viola (Denise plays), a coffee cup (he drinks espressos, she drinks americanos), their thumbprints, a stack of books, and a bottle of bourbon.

Friday Happy Hour: Cucumber-Peach Tequila Cobbler

Nole and I recently signed up for a CSA and, twice a month, we’ve been getting boxes practically overflowing with fresh fruits and vegetables.  It can be tough to find new ways to use and prepare all that produce, so I decided to throw some of it into a cocktail and see what happened.  Verdict: success!  This is a really fresh and refreshing drink for summer: a Cucumber-Peach Tequila Cobbler.  – Andrew

Read below for the full recipe!

Cucumber-Peach Tequila Cobbler

2 oz Tequila
1/4 Cucumber, Peeled and Seeded
1/2 Small Ripe Peach
1/4 oz Agave Syrup (or 1/2 oz Simple Syrup)
Splash of Lime Juice

In your shaker, muddle the cucumber and peach into a pulp.  Add the Tequila, syrup, and lime juice.  Shake hard with ice to blend everything.  Strain well – you might want to use a tea strainer to help strain out all the pulp – into a chilled coup, garnish with a slice of cucumber, and enjoy.

Tequila, with its rich vegetal Agave flavors, is easy to pair with a lot of fresh produce.  The cucumber and peach complement the Tequila nicely here, giving this drink a sweet fruitiness but also a rich earthiness.

When it comes to cocktails, fresh is best.  It can be easy to cut corners and use bottled citrus juices (I’ve been guilty of this from time to time), but the difference between fresh and bottled can be pretty dramatic.  A drink like this, which uses only the freshest juices, illustrates why: the flavors are robust intense in ways that no bottled juice ever could be.  If, like us, you’re wondering what to do with your overflowing CSA delivery, consider experimenting with some cocktails.
