Seasonal Stationery: 2014 Calendars, Part 3

I love calendars for their beautiful artwork, but it can be useful to have a big calendar where our entire family can keep track of appointments and events. Naturally, I always prefer written calendars to online versions, so today I thought I’d round up a few of my favorite write-on 2014 calendars!

Thomas’s Western Rodeo 2nd Birthday Party Invitations

Happy Monday everyone! I thought I’d kick the week off with these too-cute-for-words birthday party invitations from the ladies of Vellum & Vogue! Inspired by vintage fabric, the suite features a wood engraved invitation that evokes heat branding, wood tags with the image of a cowboy, and burlap ribbon. So fun!

From Alana + Krystal of Vellum & Vogue: Dana came to us looking for a unique and festive invitation for her son’s 2nd birthday. The overall theme of the party was inspired by a vintage rodeo fabric she fell in love with. Once we laid our eyes on the unique textile, we knew we had to incorporate it into the invitation.

We decided to create a custom fabric backer for the invitation, which highlighted one of the many rodeo-inspired vignettes found within the fabric. To complement the Western theme, we engraved the invitation design onto a solid cedar wood stock and kept the burn markings to mimic the look of heat branding. We then wrapped the invitation in a wide burlap-style ribbon and finished the look with small wood tags bearing the image of a cowboy.

Each invitation was packaged in a kraft box, sealed with a wraparound address label and mailed with Western-inspired postage.

Friday Happy Hour: Left Bank Cider

Port and sherry don’t seem, at first glance, like the most obvious ingredients for a cocktail. Port is a sweet fortified wine from Portugal and is most commonly served as a dessert wine. Sherry is likewise a fortified wine from Spain and is probably seen by a lot of people as a relic from our grandparents’ days. But I’m here to tell you that both of these are pretty great, and they’re even better when combined in a fall cocktail: the Left Bank Cider. – Andrew

1 oz Dry Sherry
1 oz White Port
1 oz Apple Cider
3/4 oz St-Germain
1 Dash Lemon Juice

Combine with ice and shake gently. Pour into a tumbler, ice and all, and enjoy!

UPDATE: If you want to make a large batch of Left Bank Cider for a fall holiday party, here’s a supersize recipe you can use!

1 Bottle White Port (750 ml or about 3 cups)
1 Bottle Dry Sherry (750 ml or about 3 cups)
3 Cups Apple Cider
2 1/3 Cups St-Germain
3-6 oz Lemon Juice, to taste

Combine in a pitcher with plenty of ice and give everything a good stir. This should give you 11-12 cups of Cider, or about 20-25 servings.

There are a lot of flavors working together in this drink: the nutty, oaky sweetness of the port and sherry; the floral sweetness of the St-Germain; and the sweet autumn fruitiness of the apple cider. A little bit of lemon juice – no more than an eighth or maybe a quarter of an ounce – provides some acidity to cut through all of that sweetness. It’s one of those rare drinks that both Nole and I love, despite our very different cocktail tastes.

The Left Bank Cider is something of a love child of two fantastic drinks: Derek Brown’s (and DC’s own) Robert Frost cocktail, one of the first drinks we ever featured, and the classic Stone Fence, the most perfect cider cocktail out there. Goes to show you: if you love two different drinks, try mashing them up and see if you have a new amazing drink on your hands.

{happy weekend!}

Sigh. Week two of this ridiculous government shutdown. And the more I listen to the news, the angrier I get. So! Time for distractions! Last weekend, we hopped into the car for a spontaneous trip to the mountains. We were only gone for a couple of days, but it was nice to get away from DC – and even more nice to see some real fall foliage. And this weekend, Paper Camp is in DC! I’m so excited to see some of my fellow panelists and meet the new students! But in the meantime…

Emmy’s Oktoberfest 30th Birthday Party Invitations

Lindsay from McMillian + Furlow always has the most creative invitation ideas! Like these fly fishing 70th birthday invitations for her dad and these amazing Memorial Day summer kick-off party invitations. Today she’s sharing the Oktoberfest-inspired invitations that she created for her sister-in-law’s 30th birthday party. I have a feeling my beer-loving husband would very much approve of these invitations!

From Lindsay: I recently designed these 5″ x 7″ postcard invitations for my sister-in-law’s Oktoberfest inspired 30th birthday. We developed the idea of naming the party “Emtoberfest” as a combination of both her name (Emmy) and Oktoberfest. The party will be held at a local German beer hall here in NYC, and typical Oktoberfest attire is strongly encouraged!

We sent the invitations out in an orange envelope which complimented the postcard design beautifully. For budget reasons, these invitations were printed digitally.
