Happy Weekend!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone! We’re doing something a bit non-traditional today – we’ll be sharing a St. Patrick’s Day mocktail recipe a bit later today! It’s green, has lots of fizz, and I think you’ll really like it. Otherwise, I’m just hoping the sun decides to stick around – and keeping my fingers crossed that the recent snow and freezing temperatures haven’t damaged the cherry blossoms too much! But in the meantime…

The World of Illustration: Tog and Pini

Hello friends! With Easter just around the corner, I thought it’d be fun to share some illustrations to get us in the bunny spirit. Although I will say, with my kiddos, bunnies are big *all* year round. They actually used to have bunnies in their last preschool, which was the cutest, and they’re now stuck on the idea of a bunny as their first pet (and yes, I think we may go for it this year!). But back to the illustration world, I am a big fan of Australian-based illustrator Clare Dunstan of Tog & Pini. It’s one of those times where you find yourself putting hearts next to half of the artist’s collection on Etsy. And scrolling deep into the artist’s Instagram. So let’s hop down to this peek into Tog & Pini, as I’m sure it’s going to capture many fans.  – Jen

The World of Illustration: Tog and Pini

Here’s a surprising fun fact about Clare. She didn’t even start drawing until she was 25! (How is that possible?!) She was always creative and as a child she sewed and made jewelry. Clare patterned her own teddy bears and made tiny doll’s house food out of clay. Then, on the professional side, she started out as a jeweler after studying gold and silver smithing. How did she jump from silver and gold to illustration? Clare shares, “After an unfortunate accident — setting the curtains above my work station alight — I turned to illustration as a safer pursuit for a dreamer!”

Just a little mermaid bunny for anyone else who lives with a child who loves anything related to mermaids.

So Clare turned to painting and drawing as her new passion, and it obviously suits her. Talk about an amazing late bloomer! She lives in Australia, so imagine the inspiration outside her window. And she works primarily in watercolor. “Being surrounded by such varied fauna has an obvious impact in my work,” shares Clare. She mostly draws on a little old antique desk that’s piled high with paints, pencils, papers, and photographers. “I’m a very messy worker!” she notes. Obviously, a lot of beauty comes out of that mess.

The World of Illustration: Tog and Pini

I love this illustration she did of meerkats. Clare lives in an outer suburb of Melbourne, Australia. “I have daily visiting native birds; a mob of pink Galahs, several sulphur-crested Cockatoos, and a pair of brightly coloured King Parrots,” she shares.

Here’s some bunny fabric in classic Easter colors, which you can find in her Etsy shop.

Clare is a true animal lover through and through. And she has pet rabbits (which surely inspired her sweet bunny illustrations.) She says, “We have two rescue dogs (who are hilarious), five guinea pigs and two rabbits that are a constant source of inspiration.”

And now I have some Easter baskets to plan. A big thanks to Clare Dunstan for sharing a peek into her work!

Whimsical Poppy and Eucalyptus Watercolor Wedding Invitations

It’s SNOWING here in DC, so I’m trying to distract myself from this situation with these whimsical poppy and eucalyptus watercolor wedding invitations from Kim of Bright Room Studio! We’ve had the pleasure of featuring many of Kim’s beautiful hand lettered and watercolor wedding invitations over the years, and I’m beyond thrilled that she recently released a new wedding invitation collection that makes it easier for brides and grooms to get Kim’s signature style without the pricetag and timeline of a custom invitation suite. Kim is here today to share one of her favorite designs from the new collection! We’re loving Kim’s cheerful script lettering paired with the gorgeous watercolor floral and eucalyptus elements!

From Kim: I’m so excited to share one of my favorite suites from my new Bright Room Studio Wedding Collection! I call this suite the Poppy design. This design was actually the last one I created. The other suites in the collection are all pretty simple and very typography based and I felt like I needed a little more watercolor and a little more floral in my life, so I started painting!

The florals are inspired by some of my favorite wedding bouquets, with big bold flowers, lots of texture and unusual elements like kumquats and berries. I love the cheery color palette because I think it works for any season; the greens and pinks are perfect for spring and summer, the orange tones lean a bit more toward fall and the touches of eucalyptus can even bring this suite into winter time.

I used the florals throughout the suite, but I think my favorite spot is on the Save the Date. I love how the wreath compliments the rest of the suite without being too “matchy matchy.” I think this might be my favorite piece in the whole collection!

I love when invitation suites come together in a way that is coordinated and cohesive but not matching, so I gave the particulars card a watercolor wash background for a little pop and to ground the whole group. I also just kept a small eucalyptus leave on the mini details card to break up the florals a bit. Everything goes together but no two pieces are the same.

I also love how the watercolor prints look on the lovely textured cotton paper. It almost looks like it was painted directly onto the card instead of digitally printed. All that texture really brings the florals to life.

The entire suite can be customized too! For brides who love the florals, you can select your hand-lettered script style, font, color, envelope colors, and which pieces you need to bring together your perfect suite. Each suite has the option of an invitation, RSVP, particulars card, weekend events card, mini card (that can be used for a website, reception details or any other little bit of info), save the date and return address stamp. I simply love how versatile a pre-designed collection can be for brides!

Behind the Stationery: 9th Letter Press

Welcome to Behind the Stationery! After a brief hiatus, we’re excited to jump back into this fan favorite series with behind the scenes peeks and advice from some of our favorite stationers. Today we’re joined by Isabel Davis, the designer and owner behind 9th Letter Press. Isabel is here to share her story with us, including how she decides which designs make it to print, how she ruthlessly edits her collection each quarter to keep inventory under control, and her design secret for making sure her collection stays true to brand. Welcome Isabel! â€“Megan

Behind the Stationery: 9th Letter Press

From Isabel: 9th Letter Press is in the heart of Winter Park, Florida. Our studio houses every part of our business — our letterpress, production and assembly, office area, and retail store. We moved in almost in five years ago and haven’t looked back since. We love our location, even if at times it does feel like we’re literally swimming in paper, envelopes, cardboard boxes, and tissue paper.

Behind the Stationery: 9th Letter Press

The stationery world is a saturated industry and I had to come to terms with the breadth of stationers out there — it’s grown tremendously since I first started! At first, I tried to offer so much and so many things to keep up. But after a while, I noticed our best sellers were the products I started the business with: charming and whimsical stationery with a blend of pretty and quirky lettering (bonus points if I could wrangle in an illustration).

Behind the Stationery: 9th Letter Press

Today, I’m still of the same mindset and happiest designing and selling letterpress and foil printed greeting cards. If I get a really great notepad idea, I’ll for sure do it if I just LOVE it. Our Grocery List and Meal Planner is the perfect example. It continues to be a bestseller, so I’ll be coming out with a new design for May. Basically, if I love it and if it’s true to us and our brand, we’ll run it. I only want to offer what I personally love, which might mean offering less. But learning that I didn’t have to do it all freed up space to concentrate on products that work well for us, and our assortment.

Behind the Stationery: 9th Letter Press

9th Letter Press Grocery Meal Planners

We’re a very flexibly run enterprise. Everyone knows their job and a typical day looks different for each position. Our Wholesale Coordinator is in every day, and hers looks like the typical 9-to-5. However, if we’re hosting workshops in the studio, or pop up shops around town, she’ll adjust her hours so her life isn’t 9th Letter Press, all day every day.

Our printer works to keep up with our ever changing inventory, and the season might demand she puts in more hours to make sure we have enough of everything we need. On our production and assembly end, there are days we have lots of orders to get out the door, and other days it’s slower. That’s been true for us since we’ve started. Whenever we go through a busier season, I’ll make sure to hire more part timers to package and ship orders.

9th Letter Press Ink + Paper

As for me, I’m the sole designer at 9th Letter Press, as well as the Instagram poster, buyer for our retail shop, and point person for any pop-ups or events. My to do list varies from day to day. Usually it means planning and coming up with new card ideas for the upcoming buying quarter, or keeping up with the website. I try to post on social media at least once a day, and once that’s done, I’m emailing potential custom design clients (anyone from brides to people needing birthday party invitations). Sometimes, I’ll reach out to prospective shop owners and send samples, too. It just depends on the needs of the day.

9th Letter Press Store + Production Side

As a night owl, my creativity comes roaring to life some point after 11PM. I keep a notebook with me at all times, and I’ll jot down phrases that might make great cards. Most of the time, I’m designing something because there’s a need for it. This year we’ll be coming out with new bachelorette cards, which is a first for us. There is always something new to try. A new angle. A new way of saying something. I get so excited when I’ve stumbled onto a fresh take on a birthday card.

9th Letter Press Isabel Sketching

Once I get my idea, I’ll start drawing and lettering. I really prefer to only start designing once I have an idea in my head. Sessions that begin that way always fare better than when I’m “forcing” something into creation. I always design in black ink to ensure our style stays true to 9th Letter Press. Once I’ve scanned in the sketch, I’ll add color. But I’ve found starting with the same color/ink ensures I’m staying under our umbrella brand. If I started using watercolor, or gouache paint, etc., it wouldn’t feel like 9th Letter Press.

9th Letter Press Card Sketching

It used to be only me that saw the new design before it went to print – not so anymore. Over three years ago we started having a “line review” where the team, plus friends who I trust, come to the studio to discuss each new card. Over lunch, we’ll vote on each one. (You can imagine how nerve-wracking this is!) Only the cards that score high for everyone make it into our new releases for that quarter and ensures that all new cards have a shot at becoming bestsellers.

9th Letter Press Computer Sketch

With each line review, we also ruthlessly discontinue cards. If we don’t, our inventory turns into a scary beast — unmanageable and too expensive to keep up with. I always look at a report that tells me what cards haven’t sold well in the last year, and no matter how much I personally love it, the card is transferred onto our discontinued list. I used to get sad about this, but in the end pruning our inventory has meant keeping only the cards that continue to pull in business.

9th Letter Press Card

Once we’ve landed on the winning designs, I’ll turn around and make sure the files for the letterpress cards are ready to be turned into plates. We locally outsource the foil printing, so that basically means the same thing except I’m doing press checks at their facility instead of in house.

My favorite day is seeing the finished card, all shiny and new, and come to life from my sketchbook. Then I usually say a prayer that it’s well-received and finds a home in a cute mom and pop shop somewhere in the country. 😉

Backyard Black Tie Wedding Invitations

Sophisticated yet laid back. These backyard black tie wedding invitations from Ashling of Lotus & Ash welcomed guests to a barefoot, relaxed, and formal wedding celebration. We love the juxtaposition of high fashion and low-key relatability! This is such a fun suite, including nods to the couple’s collegiate days where they first met. The modern calligraphy by Nicole Miyuki and classic serif typefaces make the perfect final detail of juxtaposition to pull it all together!

Backyard Black Tie Wedding Invitations by Lotus & Ash

From Ashling: As a wedding invitation designer, it’s what I’ve come to call the “triple crown” – a collaborative bride with impeccable taste, a film-worthy love story over a decade in the making, and a shared goal to design a suite that was traditional and timeless, but didn’t take itself too seriously.

Backyard Black Tie Wedding Invitations by Lotus & Ash

The mature, edgy, and meaningful invitation suite was such a trifecta. The thread for their wedding weekend was “Black Tie and Barefoot,” and it lived every bit up to its promise. The couple was married in front of the groom’s childhood home, followed by an elegant black tie reception held in the backyard. The celebration ended with an after party in the pool house, and the bride and groom jumping, fully clothed, into the pool.

When Steph and Mark first came to us to design their full wedding stationery suite in less than 5 months, we were beyond excited for the opportunity, but needed to get their save the dates out quickly. Still unsure of what their exact wedding aesthetics would be, we celebrated their days as Stanford students with a save the date that incorporated watercolor university ephemera and a portrait of the fraternity house where they first met. We incorporated a vintage map of Stanford from the couple’s collection as a personal, colorful envelope liner.

As the details came together for Steph and Mark’s backyard, black tie wedding, we knew we wanted to create something that was both sophisticated and formal, yet fun and modern. Aubergine envelopes with brush calligraphy opened to reveal a Carrara marble liner and foil-stamped pocket, inspired by the wedding decor.

The letterpress announcement, printed on the ever gorgeous 2-ply Crane’s Lettra, featured modern calligraphy paired with a classic serif typeface and a blind deboss detail on both the front (the couple’s monogram) and back (a rose pattern). The suite also included weekend details and reply cards with arresting typography, dark floral photography, and haphazard black watercolor swashes, digitally printed on an Indigo press on #130 Classic Crest.

Our personal favorite element from the suite? It’s nearly impossible to choose, but the attire card takes the crown. It featured glassine envelopes filled with colorful swatches to inspire guests attire and the instructions “black tie invited, shoes optional.” In our dream world, that would be the requested dress code for all weddings!
