Paper Party 2018! Colorful Modern Abstract Art Party Inspiration

As promised, I’m sharing the photos from this year’s Paper Party during the National Stationery Show! As you saw with the invitations and save the dates, our party inspiration was driven by a non-traditional color palette – mustard yellow, pale pink, peach, lavender, navy blue, and forest green – and modern abstract shapes. For those of you looking for some colorful modern abstract art party inspiration, we’ll be sharing all the fun party details with you today! This year’s party featured a TON of balloons, a gorgeous art print wall, a hand painted paper art installation, and a calligraphy bar! It was such a wonderful evening with some of the most lovely people in the stationery industry, and together we raised more than seven thousand dollars to help support women’s empowerment and equal rights!

Paper Party 2018 / Colorful Modern Abstract Art Party Inspiration

This was my fifth year organizing a major party for the stationery industry during the National Stationery Show. In the past, we’ve always done a free party, but this year I wanted to do something a bit different and find a way to give back in a small way. So I joined forces with Writes for Women, an advocacy group for the stationery industry that helps raise money for women’s empowerment and equal rights via the Ms. Foundation. We sold tickets to this year’s party and ended up raising more than $7,100 – more than I had ever imagined in my wildest dreams! Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who came to the party for making this possible!

This year’s party was again held at Hudson Terrace on their rooftop terrace. My talented friend (and professional event planner) Janice from Bellwether Events helped me plan the party, along with Melinda of Lion in the Sun and Caroline of CW Pencils (my party planning partners in crime from Writes for Women). And of course the party would not have been possible without our amazing sponsors, including Paper & Ink Arts, Mixbook, Legion Paper, Bella Figura, Sakura of AmericaHester & Cook Design Group, 1canoe2, and the National Stationery Show, and our fantastic creative partners Ramona & Ruth, Sam Teich, Lillian Farag, Farmette Press, and Meant to Be Calligraphy. Let’s get to all the fun details!

Okay, so first – the balloons! I knew that I wanted to incorporate a balloon installation into our party décor this year, and it turned out so fun and colorful! (We used Balloon Saloon for those of you who might need something similar in NYC) We used balloons in shades of pink, peach, deep yellow, teal, and purple – and calligrapher Sam Teich used some of Sakura of America’s Permapaque markers to letter a few fun party phrases on the balloons! It was super easy!

We also made this really fun paper art installation in collaboration with artist Lillian Farag and Legion Paper! I was feeling super inspired by our save the date and invitation design by Ramona & Ruth, so I came up with the idea of creating this installation using sheets of Colorplan and Stonehenge Aqua watercolor paper from Legion Paper. Lillian painted on the Stonehenge sheets in her signature free flowing style, and we layered Lillian’s pieces together with the Colorplan paper in lavender, candy pink, fuchsia pink, citrine, park green, forest green, and imperial blue. Stay tuned for a more detailed DIY post so you can create one of these installations for your own party!

And can we talk about this Mixbook art print wall? So gorgeous! Mixbook works with an amazing roster of artists, including Hello!Lucky, 1canoe2, Black Lamb Studio, Ashley Goldberg, and Amy Tangerine – totally perfect for our colorful evening! The art print wall featured a mix of canvas prints and acrylic block prints, and each print was either super colorful or had a message of women’s empowerment – or both!

Oh! And Mixbook also brought Eunice from Hello!Lucky to sign copies of her brand new book, Be the Change, and do some illustrations on Hello!Lucky for Mixbook stationery. So fun!

I also love having an interactive element at the party – and this year it was a calligraphy bar in collaboration with Paper & Ink Arts! The uber-talented Sam Teich hung out ALL night to do calligraphy demos using a variety of Paper & Ink Arts tools and materials, including this Paint Your Own Oblique Holder, this pointed oblique holder with a Tachikawa G Nib, a Fintec Metallic Palette, Ziller Ink in Wild Viola Violet and Wild Rose Pink, Sumi Ink, and a Size 1 Princeton Series Round Brush.

Farmette Press also sent an assortment of their GORGEOUS handmade papers for Sam to write on! They make the most beautiful paper in an amazing assortment of colors – I want them all!

The CUTEST paper placemats from Hester & Cook! I couldn’t resist these die cut unicorn placemats – that hologram foil on the horn!! – and the black and white swiss dot placemats were perfect for our tall round cocktail tables. Pretty much everything in this Sorbet collection was perfect for the party!

  • Infinite thanks to Janice, Melinda, Kelly, and Caroline, for their invaluable help over the past few months and throughout the evening – and our small army of friends who helped with set up before the party. We couldn’t have done it without you!

And of course a big thanks to CJ of Charlie-Juliet Photography for the gorgeous photos and Hudson Terrace for having us!

Monday Faves: Statement Earrings

Happy Monday everyone! When it comes to jewelry, I’m all about colorful necklaces and statement earrings this year. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, so a bold necklace and pair of earrings is the perfect way to add a bright pop of color to an outfit. I tend to gravitate towards unusual shapes, from organic ceramic pieces to minimalist brass shapes. I’ve been keeping a running list of statement earrings for a while now, and I thought I’d kick off the week by sharing a few favorites – mostly from Etsy makers and small businesses! Ready? Let’s jump in!

Favorite Statement Earrings

1. These Matisse-inspired earrings from Jules and Clem are seriously some of the most beautiful earrings I’ve ever seen. Made with lightweight acrylic, they come in a variety of color options – but this dark blue and lavender is really speaking to me.

2. I picked up a pair of Four Eyes ceramic earrings from a local pop-up boutique (Brief Assembly), and I’m now completely obsessed with this brand. The color options, the shapes – everything is gorgeous!

3. These brass half-circle earrings are true modern minimalist beauties.

4. I’m loving the deep green color and abstract expressionism-inspired vibes of these round resin earrings

5. Beautiful modern earrings from Two Boss Beads made from handmade clay beads and leather cutouts!

6. Minimalist brass rainbow earrings by Rare Bird Designs! Yes, please.

7. These Mod + Jo earrings combine brass shapes with cotton pom poms and tassels! All my favorite statement earring elements in one place.

8. These wood earrings are so unique!

Are you loving statement earrings as much as I am this year? If so, I’d love to see what you’ve added to your collections – feel free to leave links in the comments!

Navy and White Illustrated Floral Wedding Invitations

Ahhhh…. navy and white is such a beautiful and classic combination. Add in some modern botanical illustrations from one of our talented Designer Rolodex members, Kim of Bright Room Studio, and you’ve got some seriously gorgeous navy and white illustrated floral wedding invitations! I love that Kim and the bride and groom decided to letterpress print the entire suite in a single color – navy blue – which just completely elevates Kim’s beautiful illustrations and lettering. So pretty!

From Kim: Working with Allie and Michael on their invitations was so much fun. I knew it was going to be a great project when I received a design brief written by the groom! He put so much thought and time in to sharing their story, aesthetic and things that were important to them (including their favorite cocktails and guilty pleasures!) that it made the creative process so much fun and made their invitations incredibly personal and special for them.

We started with the cute map save the date. I love creating maps, especially when I get to incorporate illustrations of the architecture and buildings, combined with places that are meaningful to them. They met “the old fashioned way” – at a bar! – so we definitely wanted to incorporate that cute detail, along with the wedding venues. We did the map in a gorgeous blue, which became a design theme for the rest of the suite.

Navy and White Illustrated Floral Wedding Invitations

For the invitation, we wanted to keep it sophisticated but still personal. We chose symbols to represent their heritage: an olive branch for her Greek background and a thistle for his Scottish roots. I illustrated each branch and used it throughout the invitation through patterns, graphic details and the monogram. We letterpress printed the invitation to really make the leaf details pop.

The monogram tag is such a great example of what you can do in the design process. I showed them one design with this leaf pattern and one with the monogram and they couldn’t decide, so we found a way to incorporate both ideas throughout the suite. The monogram was also a perfect detail to use in other elements on their wedding day, such as the sweet notecards, menu and program.

We continued the monochromatic palette through everything, which kept the design cohesive and sophisticated. The little branch details and modern calligraphy style tied the smaller pieces together. What resulted was a lovely invitation that felt personal to them and gave their wedding a beautiful look throughout.

Common Room Studio Tour: The Living Room

Today I’m excited to kick off the tour of my brand new studio space, Common Room Studio, with a peek at our living room area! I use Common Room Studio to photograph all my own projects, but it’s also a community space where we hold workshops, events, and can be rented out to other photographers in the area. You can sign up for our mailing list here to learn about upcoming events and follow the studio on Instagram! I’m hoping to add co-working sessions this summer, so the space has to serve a lot of different functions and be really durable. This is the first room that you see when you enter the studio, so I wanted something welcoming with a cute and quirky modern bohemian vibe. You can check out the design inspiration that I shared a few months ago right here, and here’s how it all came together!

To refresh your memory, here’s what the space first looked like, right when I first walked in the door and after we painted all the walls and cement floors a bright white. White cement floors are impossible to maintain, but they definitely brighten the space up a lot! For the living room area, we installed Yabara FLOR carpet tiles (in the stone color) to soften the room. I love the West African-inspired graphic pattern, which adds just the right amount of visual interest without being overwhelming.

Common Room Studio Tour: The Living Room

Common Room Studio Tour: The Living Room

This room was just calling out for a sectional, so I’m beyond thrilled that Article graciously sent us their gorgeous Sven sectional in Cascadia blue! It really could not be more perfect for the room. I absolutely LOVE that deep blue velvet, and the darker color feels more easy to maintain in a shared space. Plus, the pop of deep blue is absolutely stunning against the neutral tones in the living room and provides the perfect anchor for the space. You can also see a little peek at our workshop space through the cutouts in the wall! Someday I’d love to take that (non load-bearing) wall out completely, but for now it’s the perfect spot for a comfortable sectional sofa.

Common Room Studio Tour: The Living Room

I surrounded the sectional with some of my favorite wall art from Secret Holiday Co., Rifle Paper Co., and Odd Daughter Paper, a macramé wall hanging, a vintage rug from eBay over our FLOR carpet tiles, and plenty of plants for extra texture.

I wanted almost everything in the studio to be able to move around and serve multiple purposes, so I brought in a few floor pillows and poufs that could serve as extra seating. We also have a few arm chairs throughout the studio (which you’ll see a bit later), including this fun rattan chair that pulls closer to the sofa when needed.

On the other side of the room is my favorite photo shoot area. Technically the entire studio space is a photo studio, but the light in this corner is just SO good. It’s perfect for setting up a tabletop shoot, portraits, or just about any natural light photography, and the large south-facing windows mean that we get continuous light from sunrise to sunset. It’s absolutely dreamy.

My friend Michelle recommended adding lots of plants to soften the industrial vibe of the space, so I scooped up a bunch of houseplants from my local nurseries. We’ve lost a few along the way, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised that I’ve been able to keep these guys alive! The rex begonias and rubber plant are my faves.

Well, there you go! What do you think? I’ll be sharing our workshop space and bathroom (with a CRAZY before and after) really soon! And if you’re in the DC area, I’d love for you to stop by or come to one of our workshops or events really soon!

Rainbow Watercolor Wedding Stationery Inspiration

You guys, I am SO excited for today’s post! I’m a big fan of anything rainbow (who isn’t??) and I love the look of white ink on bright colors, and this idea brings those two favorite things together! This concept came out of these DIY colorful watercolor envelopes that we did two years ago (!!), and I’m so excited to partner with Sakura of America to bring this rainbow watercolor wedding stationery inspiration to life. I enlisted Molly from Alchemy Calligraphy to work her calligraphy magic using Sakura’s Gelly Roll® Classic™ White pens (now available in three different weights!) on pieces of handmade paper that I painted with Sakura’s Koi Water Color Field Sketch Travel Kit. I’m so excited to share the results with you, along with the how-to so you can create beautiful rainbow watercolor stationery at home!

Rainbow Watercolor Wedding Stationery Inspiration with Sakura Koi Watercolors and White Gelly Roll Pens

Okay, so there are two super exciting things happening here: first, the Sakura Koi Water Color Field Sketch Travel Kits allowed me to mix my ideal rainbow color palette. Since so many pieces of paper were involved, I wanted to translate my rainbow inspiration into several different hues of each color, from the palest pink to the deepest blue and plenty of non-traditional hues in between. I’m seriously loving the terra cotta color under the quote piece below, especially paired with shades of pale pink, peach, and deep blue. So good! And second, the different weights of the Gelly Roll Classic White pens are the perfect tool for creating different lettering styles and illustrations on the watercolor paper – and the white ink is totally opaque, so it’s super clear and crisp!

Rainbow Watercolor Wedding Stationery Inspiration with Sakura Koi Watercolors and White Gelly Roll Pens

I mean, if you’re going to send out colorful watercolor envelopes, you probably want to incorporate some color into your wedding stationery, right? You can also totally use these ideas for baby showers, birthday parties, or any other event! Every party needs a bit of color and texture, no matter the size of the party! You can go full rainbow like I did, or focus on a few colors from your own color palette – with watercolor, you can easily mix your any color, so the sky is the limit! And the opaque white ink ties everything together so the entire look is cohesive.

Rainbow Watercolor Wedding Stationery Inspiration with Sakura Koi Watercolors and White Gelly Roll Pens

To create the rainbow watercolor wedding stationery, we used Sakura’s new 48-color Koi Watercolor Field Sketch Travel Kit to mix and paint dozens of different colors on handmade paper in varying sizes. I used Sakura’s refillable water brush to mix the paint colors in the detachable easel, then a larger, wider brush to paint the watercolor onto the paper in smooth strokes – leaving the tiniest white border around the edge. Also, the amount of water that you use helps determine the vibrancy of the colors. I used less water when I wanted really deep or bright colors, and more water when I wanted a lighter or more pastel color. Keep a test sheet of paper handy so you can test colors first before painting, since the colors can look different in the pan than on paper!

Rainbow Watercolor Wedding Stationery Inspiration with Sakura Koi Watercolors and White Gelly Roll Pens

Rainbow Watercolor Wedding Stationery Inspiration with Sakura Koi Watercolors and White Gelly Roll Pens

So much rainbow gorgeousness! I had place cards, menus, and table numbers in mind when choosing paper sizes, so we used mostly 2.5×3.5″ pieces and a few 5×7″ pieces. The key to achieving really bright and vibrant colors is to use handmade cotton rag paper – mine came from Fabulous Fancy Pants and Silk & Willow. I tried painting on store-bought watercolor paper but just really wasn’t able to get the colors that I wanted! The handmade paper totally did the trick.

Rainbow Watercolor Wedding Stationery Inspiration with Sakura Koi Watercolors and White Gelly Roll Pens

That mustard yellow right there is just singing to me! So good!

Rainbow Watercolor Wedding Stationery Inspiration with Sakura Koi Watercolors and White Gelly Roll Pens

Once everything is fully dry, you can start lettering! The Gelly Roll® Classic™ White pens come in three different weights – 05 fine (0.5mm), 08 medium (0.8mm), and 10 bold (1.0mm) – so you can really have fun with different lettering styles and calligraphy. Fine lines are perfect for elegant calligraphy on a wedding invitation, while the medium and bold lines are fun for more non-traditional lettering on place cards and menus. You can also mix different lettering styles, from script to serif to all caps – the most important thing is to have fun with whatever styles you choose!

Is there anything better than beautiful watercolors combined with soft deckled edges? It’s just the perfect combination!

I love the way Molly from Alchemy Calligraphy added these sweet botanical illustrations to the table numbers! Such a fun way to dress up a simple table number design. I love the way the white ink pops against the watercolor, and the texture of the handmade paper also adds such a special and unique touch.
