Minyi + Brian’s Modern Watercolor Wedding Invitations

These beautiful wedding invitations from Meghan of And Here We Are mix whimsical watercolors and hand lettering with a modern chevron pattern for a Fall wedding at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Boathouse. And the illustration of the bride and groom’s French bulldog on the RSVP? So cute!

From Meghan: Minyi and Brian had a fall Brooklyn wedding in the Prospect Park Boathouse. The wedding style was classic romance with a modern & fun twist, so we mixed a loose hand lettered script with watercolor backgrounds and chevron pattern, and also got to make a fun illustration of their French bulldog, Thor, for the RSVP postcards. Their colors were deep purple and succulent green; and Minyi loves all things sparkly, so metallic gold was a must.

The save the date and invitations feature hand-drawn letters and illustrations, which were then hand painted, letter press printed AND hot foil-stamped. They also included an after-party invitation on gold paper, and a tri-fold map of Brooklyn with some of Minyi & Brian’s favorite Brooklyn places listed. We printed a double run of the maps so that they could also be tucked into the welcome bags for out-of-town guests.

We also created loads of day-of goods including menus, programs, seating chart, signage, and place cards. The day-of items were mostly digitally printed, and the signs were hand painted with watercolor and gold leaf gilding.

The Jacques Rose

Okay, so I fibbed a little. Last week I promised a return to a classic Champagne cocktail for our last drink this month, but I just didn’t have it in me. I’m actually not the biggest fan of most classic Champagne cocktails! So we’re back again this week with a spin on Death & Co‘s Jane Rose, which is in turn a spin on the classic Jack Rose – we’re calling ours the Jacques Rose. We’ll also be talking a little about alternative bubblies to Champagne and what they can bring to a drink, too. – Andrew

The Jacques Rose

1 1/2 oz Calvados
3/4 oz Lemon Juice
1/2 oz Lime Cordial
1/4 oz Grenadine
Hard Apple Cider

To make the lime cordial, combine the zest and juice of several limes with raw sugar of equal weight. Let the mixture combine for a day, stirring occasionally, then strain and bottle.

Combine all the ingredients except the cider with ice and shake, then strain into a chilled coupe glass. Top with the cider and enjoy!

The original Jack Rose pairs apple brandy, citrus, and grenadine for a fun Sour. The Jane Rose throws in some lime cordial, a gorgeously sweet-tart mixture, and dry Champagne. Our Jacques Rose switches out the apple brandy for Calvados – an apple-based spirit from Normandy that’s a little more rustic than an apple eau de vie – and replaces the Champagne with hard cider. My first try was a little too sweet, tasting more like a Jolly Rancher than a proper drink, so I reduced the grenadine and added more lemon. The result is still a bit sweeter than I’d normally like but is right up Nole’s alley – a sweet, fizzy dessert drink.

Using apple cider instead of Champagne was also a fun way of playing around with the effervescence of a bubbly drink without relying solely on Champagne. Champagne is wonderful, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not the only (and definitely not the cheapest) way of adding fizz to a drink. Sparkling wines from outside the Champagne region of France – Prosecco from Italy, Cava from Spain, or even Crémant wines from elsewhere in France – are often much cheaper than Champagne and can offer much the same palate, as long as you look for dryer versions. But you can also play around with other carbonated drinks, like apple or pear cider or even a tart, fruity lambic beer. Just as long as you look for dryer cider, or else your drinks will end up tasting like candy. Unless that’s your thing.

Pro Tip: Never shake a carbonated ingredient in a sealed shaker, unless you want your shaker to blast apart and send your drink flying everywhere. (I’m not saying at all that I know what this looks like from experience.) Always add a carbonated ingredient like Champagne or hard cider as the last step, after you have shaken your other ingredients.

So that finishes up our month of bubbly cocktails. We’ll be spending February, fittingly, with some hot drinks. Stay tuned! And don’t forget to follow us on Instagram, where we’ve been posting lots of our experiments before they reach our Friday Happy Hour column!

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! I’m super excited for this weekend – I’m heading up to New York to attend NYNOW! After skipping the summer show (I was 8 months pregnant with Alice at the time), I’m looking forward to saying hello to all my exhibitor friends in person and see all their new goodies! You can walk the show with me via Instagram (I’ll be walking Sunday and Monday), and of course I’ll be sure to share a few favorites here after I get back. But in the meantime…

Quick Pick: Yellow Owl Workshop DIY Indigo Textile Kits

So here’s the thing. I’m 100% convinced that Christine from Yellow Owl Workshop is a genius. Her designs have been among my favorites for the past 6+ years, but I also know that she puts an incredible amount of time and energy into product development – from her offset printed cards to her DIY kits – to make each detail as perfect as possible. But I think she’s completely outdone herself with these new Indigo Textile Kits making their debut at NYNOW this weekend!

Yellow-Owl-Workshop-Indigo-Dye-Kit

Christine spent a year and a half basically inventing a new ink that works as both a dye and a paint and is packaged in a dripless nozzle (instead of a big vat of very particular dyeing chemicals). See? Genius! The kit comes with a cotton scarf, but I could totally see this kit being used to create tablecloths and napkins, clothing, or even upholstery textiles. The kit even comes with a booklet of instructions for tie-dye, shibori dye, vat dye, and resist dye techniques, as well as painting and stamping techniques.

So. Awesome. I know a lot of people are going to have a lot of fun with these new kits – congrats Christine!
