9 Years of OSBP + Introducing Common Room Studio!

Write Your Own Story / Frankie's Girl

Today Oh So Beautiful Paper turns 9 years old! And earlier this week, I turned 36 years old! I never could have imagined what a wild and beautiful adventure lay ahead when I published my first post nine years ago. I started Oh So Beautiful Paper just three and a half months after my wedding; my husband saw that I was in need of a post-wedding project, so he suggested that I start a blog. I was still working on a diplomacy career at the U.S. Department of State, so Oh So Beautiful Paper was initially my creative outlet and a way to share my love of stationery and wedding invitations with anyone who might listen. You can read more about my story right here, but even after nine years of blogging and seven years of self-employment I still can’t quite believe that I get to wake up and do this every day!

As excited as I am to celebrate NINE years of OSBP, I have even more exciting news to share: we’re opening a brand new studio space in Alexandria, Virginia called Common Room Studio! It’s going to be part photography studio and part workshop space, and I can’t decide if I’m more excited to finally have a space to produce some larger scale DIY and cocktail party shoots or to have a space where I can host people and engage more with my local community. We’re planning everything from calligraphy and watercolor workshops to cocktail classes. Common Room Studio will also be available to rent if you’d like to host your own photo shoot or workshop here! It’s going to be so fun!

Introducing Common Room Studio

Common Room Studio is on a quiet street in the Potomac Yard neighborhood of Alexandria, just a few minutes north of Old Town Alexandria. Our building is more than 100 years old and was originally built as a cafeteria for the workers in neighboring businesses, so it has an industrial vibe with a very open floor plan – which is both super rare in DC and perfect for me! I feel so lucky to have found this space after looking on and off in DC for nearly four years! We’ve been working on building out the inside of the studio for the last few months, and I thought I’d share some of the before photos and some of the progress we’ve made so far!

So here’s what the studio looked like the very first time I walked in:

In rough shape, but with lots of potential. I know it’s hard to get a sense of the layout from these photos, but the studio is around 1,000 square feet divided into two rooms. The front room (with the glass block window) is the smaller of the two rooms, but is still quite large with plenty of room for an entry space/sitting area and a small photo bay. There is a doorway into the larger second room, which contains our large photo bay, the kitchenette, bathroom, and our workshop space – all of which gets tons of beautiful and bright natural light from a large skylight!

The first thing I asked my contractor to do was tear down the 1960s-era drop ceiling and paint everything – floor and walls – a bright white (Extra White by Sherwin-Williams). Here’s what the studio looked like after taking out the drop ceiling and painting the floor:

Better, but after taking out the drop ceiling we found old water damage in the ceiling drywall, some old fluorescent lights, and random old pipes and wires. I’m planning to embrace the industrial vibe of our space, but we still needed to clean things up a bit. So we took everything down and put up brand new ceiling drywall and cleaned up the pipes and wires:

We also added a fun band of light pink (Alyssum by Sherwin-Williams) in the workshop space and painted the back door in the same shade of pink. Here’s what it looked like a few weeks ago, just before our furniture arrived:

That’s about as much as I can show you for now! I can’t wait to share more about Common Room Studio in the coming weeks – including my design plans for the entire space! And I’m so excited to finally start shooting some projects in our new space and sharing those images with you. In the meantime, if you’re in the DC area or interested in attending a future workshop at Common Room Studio, you can sign up for our monthly newsletter right here!

Thank you so much for following along for the past eight years and as my business continues to evolve and grow. I’m so grateful for all of you! I know this 9th year of Oh So Beautiful Paper will be the best one yet. xo

*A big thanks to our friends at Sherwin-Williams for providing all the paint for the studio! Painting everything white made SUCH a huge difference, and I love the pop of bright pink in our workshop space!

Modern Gold and Plum Watercolor Wedding Invitations

It’s been a minute since we featured some gorgeous wedding invitations, so let’s jump right back in the saddle with these modern gold and plum watercolor wedding invitations from designer and calligrapher Ash Bush! These stunning invitations highlight her gorgeous lettering and painterly skills. And can we talk about the navy outer envelopes for a moment, please? A sweep of gold paint, modern lettering, and a vintage stamp collage!

Modern Gold and Plum Watercolor Wedding Invitations

From Ash: Talk about dream project! Working with Laura and Doug on their custom watercolor wedding invitations was so life-giving. They were getting married at the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas, a beautiful, botanical oasis. Her colors were jewel-toned berry and deep navy blue, along with some pops of plum and glittery gold. The minute I heard her vision was the minute I fell in love with this suite.

Modern Gold and Plum Watercolor Wedding Invitations

I went very modern and painterly for the style and feel of the whole suite as well as the custom lettering. The outer envelope totally stole the show. They were a beautiful deep blue, and we contrasted that with a bright gold brushstroke across the front. The gold was topped with some white lettering, and the white lettering carried over onto the back return address flap. We also carried the gold lettering over onto the rsvp envelopes, but in a subtle way.

Everything was paired with paint splatters and tons of gorgeous texture. Laura opted for curated vintage stamps on her envelope, and that was totally the cherry on top of an already delicious sundae! To really complete the suite I designed a custom envelope liner in a subtle gradient of her colors, paired with some watercolor texture. And then I went through and hand-speckled the invites and envelopes with gold splatters, totally worth it!

Modern Gold and Plum Watercolor Wedding Invitations

Her day-of details consisted of the most amazing dip-dyed escort cards. I dipped them all by hand in a custom berry ink, and blue watercolor mixture, and then paired it with gold lettering. The event planner then hung them all along with greenery to create a stunning visual at the reception. I also made some custom signs for her food tables and bar settings.

Modern Gold and Plum Watercolor Wedding Invitations

I don’t think I’ll ever stop dreaming about this wedding suite, and the photos from the day show how beautifully it all came together to create a bohemian and modern high-end style.

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! We started with that amazing eclipse on Monday, and as of today we officially made it through our first week of school here in DC. Yay! Next week, Oh So Beautiful Paper will be on our annual summer hiatus – so we’ll be back with fresh new posts after Labor Day. Plus, I have some REALLY exciting news that I can’t wait to share with all of you! But you’ll just have to wait until September 5 to find out what it is! But in the meantime…

Make this fun DIY watercolor floral pencil pouch!

DIY Watercolor Floral Pencil Pouch

A new era officially kicks off for my little family today: my oldest daughter, Sophie, starts kindergarten this morning! She’s super excited for the start of a new school year, but I’m trying not to be a blubbery mess – especially since my youngest daughter, Alice, starts preschool (at the same school!) a bit later in the week. Anyway, in honor of Sophie’s first day of kindergarten, I have a fun project for you today: a DIY watercolor floral pencil pouch!

DIY Watercolor Floral Pencil Pouch

A couple of weeks ago I rounded up eleven of my favorite pencil pouches available for purchase, but I couldn’t find a floral option that I really loved. Vibrant watercolor florals have a special place in my heart, so I teamed up with Courtney from Swiss Cottage Designs to create a colorful illustrated floral pattern for this DIY version! Of course, I styled these as pencil pouches, but you could also use it as a makeup or catch-all bag – or make a bunch of them to give as bridesmaid gifts! The whole process is a snap, so let’s get right to it!

DIY Watercolor Floral Pencil Pouch

To make this DIY watercolor floral pencil pouch:

Step 1. Download and print our watercolor floral template onto iron-on transfer paper for white or light color fabrics. The instructions are different for each type and brand of transfer paper, so be sure to follow the printing instructions on the package.

Step 2. Cut out the floral pattern. It’s totally fine to cut loosely around the entire floral illustration, you just want to cut everything down to fit the size of the zipper pouch.

Step 3. Place the floral pattern on the zipper pouch and iron on according to the package instructions. Some will have you iron on face down, some face up, some require everything to cool before removing the liner, etc. – so just be sure to follow the exact instructions according to your package. It’s totally easy!

Step 4. Fill your floral pouch with pens, pencils, or whatever makes you happy and you’re good to go!

I just love how these turned out! So vibrant and cheerful – and so useful in so many ways. Download the printable floral watercolor pattern from Swiss Cottage Designs below!
