Pimm’s Cup

Summer in England means Pimm’s Cups, earthy and delicious and perfect for sipping the heat away. I think it’s a tradition we should all take up here too. –Andrew

Pimm’s Cup

2 oz Pimm’s No. 1
1/2 oz Sweet Vermouth
1/2 oz Lemon-Mint Shrub
Ginger Beer

Using a sharp knife or a mandolin, cut a very thin slice of cucumber lengthwise, then wrap it around the inside of the glass. Fill the glass with crushed ice to keep the cucumber in place, then add the Pimm’s, Sweet Vermouth, and lemon-mint shrub. Top with ginger beer and give it a stir. Then go wild with garnishes: fresh berries, lemon and lime wheels, mint, whatever you can find that’s ripe and verdant.

Verdant is really key here. You want your Pimm’s to feel like the world blooming from spring to summer in a glass. Pimm’s No.1 is essentially a bottled cocktail, gin-based and flavored with a secret blend of herbs that dates back to 1823. It is dark reddish-brown and it both looks and tastes like something primal. Combine it with ginger and citrus and more herbs and you have something that’s both a little mysterious and really perfect for a hot summer’s day.

This isn’t exactly the classic recipe. A traditional Pimm’s Cup is pretty simple, just Pimm’s No. 1 and some English lemonade (carbonated and citrusy) or ginger ale, a straightforward highball. And you won’t go wrong if you take the simpler route. I wanted to play with the framework of a Pimm’s Cup, rearranging the ginger and lemon and adding in a few extra layers of flavor while sticking to the spirit of the original. When you’re making your own Pimm’s Cup, don’t worry too much about the specifics, but do think about all these flavors and the ways you can combine them – maybe lemon juice instead of shrub, or ginger liqueur in place of ginger beer. It’s hard to go wrong here.

Magic Theme Birthday Party Invitations

I’ve had the pleasure of featuring every single birthday party invitation for Lisa from Good on Paper‘s eldest son, Lucas – and today Lisa is sharing Lucas’s SIXTH birthday party invitation. (Side note: whaaaaaat????) You can also see the invitations from previous birthdays: 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. I love the way Lisa makes each invitation feel fresh and special without being overly cutesy. One year Lisa went with a hide and seek theme, and last year was a wild animal theme! This year, Lucas chose a magic theme for his birthday party, and for his magic theme birthday party invitations Lisa created a vintage-inspired design with an old school magic feel. Lisa incorporated custom photo envelope liners, which have become a bit of a tradition for her boys’ birthday party invitations, and a custom rubber stamp that was used on the invitations and day-of party stationery!

From Lisa: Lucas decided on a magic theme for his 6th birthday party this year. I designed the invitations with a clean but slightly vintage feel, complete with custom photo envelope liners and a custom rubber stamp that was used on favor bags, dessert packaging for mochi ice cream, thank you cards, and our traditional donut hole cones. I stuck to a color scheme of black/white/red which reminded me of old school magic. The double thick invitations were mailed in kraft envelopes and sealed with wrap-around address labels.

Paper Party 2016: Hologram Foil Art Print and DIY Party Signs

Last week I shared the photos from Paper Party 2016, along with the party invitations, cocktail recipes, and tote bags, but I have a few final details from the party to share! For the past couple of years, we’ve created an exclusive keepsake art print just for the party inspired by the invitation design. This year’s keepsake art print features artwork from Ashley Buzzy Lettering & Press and was printed in hologram foil by Mama’s Sauce on lavender Colorplan from Legion Paper! And because the folks at Mama’s Sauce are just cool like that, they printed a bunch of extras for all of you! Keep reading below for instructions on how to receive one of these gorgeous prints – totally free!

You may recognize the artwork by Ashley Buzzy from the party coasters, but the artwork was actually created exclusively for this print. I gave the words – “follow the call of the disco ball” – to Ashley and asked her to work her magic. After seeing a sample of Legion Paper’s Colorplan paper in this absolutely GORGEOUS shade of lavender, I knew it was the perfect fit for this 5×7 art print. The talented team at Mama’s Sauce printed the artwork in hologram foil, and voila!

So dreamy, right?? I just love the way the hologram foil changes color in the light. If you’d like to have one of these art prints, please just leave your mailing address here and we’ll pop one in the mail to you!

Paper Party 2016 DIY Acrylic and Vinyl Party Signs / Oh So Beautiful Paper

I loved Ashley’s artwork so much, I decided to turn it into a fun sign for the party! I also made a second sign using calligraphy by Mon Voir from last year’s Paper Party. Both signs were made with vinyl over an acrylic board spray painted on the back. The idea is basically the same as this DIY acrylic sign tutorial (one of my all time favorites on OSBP!), but with vinyl lettering cut out using my Silhouette CAMEO instead of written out with a paint marker. I spray painted each acrylic board with a couple layers of silver glitter spray paint, then added a layer of mint green to one sign and pastel lavender to the other sign, and finally added the vinyl lettering to the front of the acrylic board.

Paper Party 2016 Welcome Signs / Canvas by Mixbook with calligraphy by Meant to Be Calligraphy / Oh So Beautiful Paper

Finally, the party welcome signs! Mixbook (one of our party sponsors) offers canvas prints in a range of sizes, and the 16×20″ size just happens to be perfect as a welcome sign for a cocktail party! We made a total of three canvas prints: one to display in the lower lobby, one to display at the party entrance on our floor, and another directing guests to the photobooth. Each print used the watercolor background from the Paper Party invitations and the party logo created by Ashley Buzzy. Michele from Meant to Be Calligraphy then wrote a unique message on each print using a black paint pen. I love how these prints turned out!
