Modern Copper Foil and Gray Wedding Invitations

There’s just something about copper foil paired with dark paper, don’t you think? These modern copper foil and gray wedding invitations from Brynne at Harken Press blend traditional text and a classic layout with a modern color palette. And that envelope liner!

From Brynne: After hearing about Christine’s vision for their formal New Orleans wedding, I knew right away that I wanted to blend traditional design with modern colors and non-traditional materials. Foil printing was the perfect choice to compliment their chic wedding décor with mixed metals and all white flowers. Copper metallic foil on pewter gray paper added the hint of romance the couple was looking for, and helped set the tone for their evening wedding ceremony. The envelope liner brings a modern touch with a graphic peonies pattern. The end result was a romantic and eye catching invitation suite that Christine and Robert were so excited to mail to their wedding guests.

Romantic Gold Foil Wedding Invitations

Gold foil is everywhere these days, but let’s face it: metallics are timeless. I’m always happy to see a beautiful gold wedding invitation suite, regardless of the printing method, or envelopes calligraphed in sparkly gold ink. (And while gold and other metallic foils may be all the rage these days, foil stamping is a printing method that dates back to the 1930s and earlier!) These romantic gold foil wedding invitations from Laura of Paper & Honey definitely fall on the classic end of the metallic spectrum, with gorgeous calligraphy woven throughout the invitation suite and an overall neutral color palette that includes white address calligraphy on gray envelopes. Just a beautiful combination.

From Laura: Gretchen, along with her fiancé Stephen, had dreams of their wedding reflecting togetherness, family, and love. Their number one priority was a stunning custom invitation suite to kick it all off! Held in Hartland, Michigan, the wedding itself was equal parts classic and a tiny bit vintage. While Gretchen is an event planner, it took a little bit of time to transition from the aesthetic she had originally envisioned — bold vintage graphics, heavy and differentiating typography, an autumn color palette — to her elegant and elevated final suite. The evolution was night and day, and her suite is delicate and just the right amount of whimsical.

Calligraphy, a hand illustrated map, and gold foil stamping is a recipe after my own heart. As the design itself is fairly sweet and simple, we brought in texture through the use of felt paper and a gold brush liner to imitate the tablecloths spread out at the reception. Gretchen and Stephen wanted their wedding day to be warm and welcoming, so we kept the calligraphy fun and modern rather than sticking to more traditional Copperplate styles.

Gold foil stamping can be pretty trendy nowadays as far as stationery goes, but a neutral color palette keeps the suite romantic and timeless. For her soft grey envelopes accented by delicate white calligraphy, Gretchen worked one on one with Flowers by LJP to curate Michigan-themed vintage stamps. The perfect finishing touch!

The map card might be my favorite aspect to the suite. Gretchen and Stephen married at the historic Hartland Music Hall and held their reception at Waldenwoods, and both were a joy to illustrate! This area of Michigan is beautiful, with lots of rolling countryside and spring-fed lakes. Waldenwoods claims to have a fairy-tale setting — I hope this suite did them justice!

Winter Foliage Wedding Invitations

Happy Tuesday everyone! We ended up getting a few inches of snow (and ice) over the President’s Day weekend, so I thought it would be perfectly appropriate to start with these winter foliage wedding invitations from Julie of Hollyhock Lane for our first post of the week! The invitation suite features hand painted portraits of the bride and groom, along with colorful illustrations and modern brush lettering!

From Julie: This invitation suite was actually a special commission for my sister-in-law. When she got engaged, she knew immediately that she wanted to have a winter wedding. Being so close in timing to Christmas, Kate and Ben wanted to have a glitzy golden feel about their wedding, but they also wanted the design to include firs and winter berry foliage to tie in with the rustic theme of the rural barn where they would be holding their reception.

Kate and Ben liked the idea of having their own painted portraits within the stationery, and they liked the idea of being dressed in their signature casual clothes, hinting at their personality and interests (Kate herself being a fashion designer). However, we all decided this might not work for their actual invitations as it could look a bit too informal. So we decided to include the informal portraits on their save the dates, paired with some simple modern hand lettered script, giving the save the dates a slightly cheeky, relaxed feel.

For the invitations, I adapted the same portraits to feature the head and shoulder shots of the couple, but this time capturing a glimpse of their wedding attire without giving away too many secrets of ‘the dress’.

In terms of format, Kate and Ben loved the idea of a concertina folded invitation, which could include the invitation wording, a map of the church, reception venue and a few informative details, as well as a perforated reply slip which could be removed and sent as a postcard separately.

The whole design was framed with illustrated winter foliage of evergreens, firs, and berries in keeping with the wedding colours and which also repeated on the rest of the stationery. To give it a bit of wow factor and to match the gold used throughout the decorations on the day, we printed the invitation text in gold foil – which was also hand lettered in the same modern brush lettering that I had developed for their save the dates. The stationery was printed on GFSmith Callisto Pearl card, a beautiful off white colour somewhere between warm white and ivory, and with a soft delicate texture which lends itself so well to hand painted illustrations.

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! And yay for long weekends! Do you all have anything fun planned for President’s Day weekend? It’s supposed to be bitterly cold here this weekend, so I’m trying to come up with new fun indoor things to do to entertain my girls. Museums are usually our go-to solution for hot summer and cold winter days – and the U.S. Botanic Garden is perfect for a dose of greenery in the middle of winter. But in the meantime…

That’s it for me this week! Check back a bit later for this week’s cocktail recipe! I hope you have a wonderful long weekend, and I’ll see you back here on Tuesday! xoxo

DIY Googly Eye Classroom Valentines

Okay, so this officially qualifies as last minute – but hey, as a busy mom, pretty much EVERYTHING I do is last minute. Luckily there’s a printable in this post and these Valentines take all of 10 minutes from start to finish, which makes them the perfect solution for busy moms everywhere. I made these DIY googly eye classroom Valentines with my 3 year-old in mind. She can’t yet read the words and she definitely doesn’t understand puns yet, but googly eyes? Every toddler can get behind googly eyes! We’ll be pairing our Valentines with cute temporary tattoos (another toddler favorite), but you could easily staple these to a gift bag full of Valentine’s Day candy or punch a hole in the top and use them as oversized gift tags!

So here’s the thing about preschoolers: even though they’re only just now learning how to write and read, they LOVE writing letters to each other. At my daughter’s preschool, each child has their own little mailbox where they can leave each other notes, and I’m constantly delivering envelopes to the teachers because the kids “write” so many letters to each other. It’s just the cutest thing ever. Our school is having a Valentine’s Day social tomorrow morning and I can’t wait to see these tiny humans all exchange Valentine’s Day cards with each other!

To make the googly eye classroom Valentines:

Step 1. Download the free printable here and print onto any color card stock. I can’t resist an opportunity to use my Heidi Swapp Minc foil applicator, so I turned mine into gold foil Valentines – but they also look super cute in black and white! Trim the cards down to size using scissors or a paper cutter.

Step 2. Apply a small dot of school glue to the back of a pair of googly eyes (mine are from Michaels) and place them on the card – or let your toddler do it! Allow to dry. If you don’t have googly eyes on hand, try drawing a pair of eyeballs instead! Write the name of each recipient at the bottom, along with your child’s name, then adhere to a Valentine’s Day treat of your choice.

I’m also planning to print a bunch of these for my 1 year-old’s daycare class. Googly eyes! The perfect solution for tiny humans of all ages. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
