{happy holidays!}

Okay everyone, I’m signing off for the holidays! I’m heading out to wrap a few remaining presents, pack for our trip, and take care of a few loose ends… you know, glamorous stuff. Next week I’ll feature a few of my favorite posts from 2012 before returning with new content the following week. But in the meantime…

Happy Holidays from Oh So Beautiful Paper

…a few links for your weekend:

This week on Oh So Beautiful Paper:

That’s it for me this week! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday, and I’ll see you back here soon! xoxo

Sophie at 3 Months

Sophie reached the 3-month mark last week, and while I haven’t been very good about taking a monthly photo of her in the same place I wanted to capture her in this adorable and smiley stage before she gets even bigger. So before we all go running off for the holidays, I thought I’d share a few photos!

Before Sophie was born, I remember thinking that the three month mark was going to be this huge milestone. She’ll be doing things! Less crying! Sleeping through the night! Ah, the optimism of pre-babydom… I can’t help but laugh at my earlier emphasis on an arbitrary timeframe. Sophie is so different now compared to her first few weeks as a newborn, but you definitely trade old challenges for new ones with each stage. Right now, we can’t get enough of her gummy smiles and tiny laughs. We’re still working on the whole sleep-through-the-night thing, but my mom reminded me that longer sleep often comes as a baby gains more weight. Sophie is a small baby (only 10.5 lbs at 3 months), so it could take a while and we’re trying to be patient.

Sophie has had such a sweet and happy temperament ever since she was born – we feel so lucky! She absolutely lights up whenever she sees us, and it almost makes my heart burst when I hear her making happy cooing noises at her papa while I’m doing something in another room. She also makes the most hilarious faces and noises that crack us up to no end – even though she has no idea that she’s been so funny! I’m looking forward to all the milestones to come, but I’m also really loving this stage in her life.

This weekend we’ll be making the loooooong drive up to Syracuse to spend the holidays with my husband’s family, and while I’m excited for Sophie to (hopefully) experience snow for the first time, I’m a bit nervous about how she’ll handle the several-hours-long car ride. Anyone have any tips for making long drives with young babies? I’d love any advice or tips that you experienced mamas could share!

Chris + Sally’s Ikat Letterpress Holiday Cards

Sally from La Happy sent over her personal holiday cards – and I just couldn’t resist sharing them! In addition to the adorable photo, I’m loving the bright and cheerful color palette, quirky calligraphy, and the ikat envelope liners (wrapping paper from Mr. Boddington’s Studio!) are just the perfect finishing touch!

From Sally: These are the Christmas cards that my husband and I sent out to friends and family this year. The cards were letterpress printed on heavyweight cotton Savoy 236lb brilliant white paper in cherry red ink. I mounted a photo of my husband and myself from a tree farm photo shoot onto the front of the cards. The envelopes are soft cotton brilliant white, addressed with cherry red calligraphy and lined with red ikat wrapping paper.

Camden’s Typographic Year In Review Holiday Cards

I’m a big fan of Year in Review cards – particularly for families that have undergone major changes that year, from big moves to welcoming a new family member. Camden from Studio Ephemera recently relocated her family to the Bay Area in California, so she combined her annual holiday card with a moving announcement and big update on her family’s recent changes. For the design, Camden chose a mix of fun typefaces with a few graphic icons scattered throughout to help anchor the text.

From Camden: Our family has had a really busy year. We went through a long period of transition from the East Coast to the West Coast, as well as to new careers, so there was a lot to catch people up on. I decided to make our card two sided: the front a recap of the past year and hints for what awaits us next year, and the back an apology for falling out of touch and a summary of our new address and contact information.

I used lyrics from the Bob Dylan song “The Times They Are A ‘Changin'” to tie both sides together thematically. Because there was so much information to convey, I decided to keep the card typographic in nature, using graphic icons and symbols to create visual interest and break up/balance the text.

For the type, I wanted something lighthearted but easy to read with a bit of a retro feel, so I used a combination of typefaces that I felt complemented one another (albeit in a quirky/non traditional way): KG Two is Better than One and KG All Things New, by Kimberly Geswein, Carton by Nick McCosker, and VAG Rounded by Gerry Barney.

For the color, I chose a deep teal on white to keep things streamlined, clean and fresh – a good way to recap the old and welcome the new! Matching envelopes kept everything tied together. Because I really wanted the cards to convey a handmade, quality feel, I letterpress printed them onto Rives BFK using a Vandercook (special thanks to Peter of Peter Koch Printers for letting me use his press!)
