Miami Architecture-Inspired Wedding Invitations

Happy Monday everyone! Designer Kate Holgate is an absolute master at blending modern and vintage-inspired details, and these wedding invitations are no exception! Kate designed these invitations for a recent wedding in Miami, combining custom patterns inspired by the architectural details of the wedding venue with modern type and color choices. How gorgeous are those blind impression patterns??

From Kate: Dane and Jenn are a lovely couple recently married in Miami. I really enjoyed getting to know them as we collaborated on their invitation suite. Not only were they incredibly gracious, they had impeccable taste and fantastic ideas. The location of the ceremony is a gorgeous historic Italian estate on Biscayne Bay called the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. The villa is a National Historic Landmark bursting with visual inspiration — from beautiful, ornate architectural details to gorgeous flowers and fountains.

Dane and Jenn wanted a sophisticated design that incorporated elements from the past yet still looked modern. To accomplish this, I designed several custom patterns inspired by interior details of the villa (floors, stained-glass windows, tiles) paired with modern typography and hand-written accents. I used a clean color palette of bright white and grays with pops of blush and sea foam green to balance the heavily-textured design.

Boxcar Press did an outstanding job with intricate letterpress work and Miami calligrapher Natalia Otalora added her special touch to the envelopes. I couldn’t be happier with the elegant results. Cheers to Dane and Jenn!

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! It’s Halloween weekend! We haven’t decided if we’ll take Sophie trick or treating on Saturday; she’s still pretty young and our neighborhood gets a bit crazy (and crowded) during trick or treating. But tonight is our neighborhood Halloween festival, and we’re definitely looking forward to taking both Sophie and Alice! But in the meantime…

That’s it for me this week! Check back a bit later for this week’s cocktail recipe – and I hope you all have a wonderful Halloween weekend! xoxo

Printable Calligraphy Halloween Favor Bags

One thing I’ve noticed after hosting countless get togethers is that guests seem to enjoy snacks and sips more if they are pre-portioned. I’ve set out jars and jars of delicious popcorn with no takers… but put that popcorn in cute little bags and our friends just can’t get enough. I think it’s the ease of having something that doesn’t take away from conversations in addition to being much less messy. So in preparation of all your Halloween happenings, download these printable mini bags and use them for everything from snacks to favors! – Lauren

To create the mini favor bags:

Step 1. Print out the printable calligraphy file, which contains three different bag designs – Trick or Treat, Hocus Pocus, and Eat, Drink, and be Scary – laid out on one sheet. Start by cutting on the red lines (to separate them and then to cut the flaps on each side).

Step 2. Fold to create the bottom of the bag. Then fold in the flaps on the sides. Fold slightly past the black lines so they are hidden when you attach the flaps to each other.

Step 3. Apply double-sided tape to the inside of each flap. Fold in half and press the flaps together to finish. Fill and give out to friends, trick-or-treaters, coworkers, or have on hand for a party!

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you all had a beautiful week! We’re expecting another crisp Fall weekend here in DC, and I’m really enjoying these clear days before the temperatures get cold. Sophie is studying trees at preschool this month, so we’re planning to go collect some leaves and acorns this weekend! But in the meantime…

That’s it for me this week! We’ll hopefully have a cocktail recipe for you all on Monday – things got a bit too hectic for us at the end of the week! Have a wonderful weekend! xoxo

Rustic Watercolor Colorado Wedding Invitations

We’re starting to get some wonderful fall foliage here in DC – so I can only imagine what the mountains must look like this time of year! Bonnie and Currier from Tenn Hens Design sent over these beautiful rustic watercolor invitations designed for a wedding in Colorado this past summer, complete with a gorgeous watercolor illustrations, antler motif, and woodgrain paper. The perfect fit for a wedding weekend in the mountains!

From Bonnie and Currier: Earlier this year, we got the opportunity to work on a custom wedding invitation and it was a true labor of love. The wedding called guests to the mountains of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and promised a weekend of outdoor events that were not to be missed. The bride wanted the suite to reflect her Native American heritage and the beauty of the natural setting so we created a watercolor “crest” touching on those elements.

The save the dates were letterpress printed on woodgrain paper as a nod to the beautiful aspen trees that would surround the ceremony site.

For the invitation suite we made woodgrain booklets that were carefully wrapped with handmade feather tassels and set inside a kraft box with lace. Very elegant, but with a relaxed and authentic feel of the West. The folders and invitations were letterpress printed and the watercolor pieces were digitally printed to show off all the color.

Since this was a destination wedding there was also a party card and an information card for the guests. We created watercolor illustrations to add colorful details and make each piece stand out.
