Shelley’s Destination 40th Birthday Party Invitations

I’ve always been kind of in love with the idea of a destination wedding. What could be better than a fabulous exotic vacation surrounded by my favorite people in the whole world? So why not celebrate a milestone birthday with a destination event? Arley-Rose and Morgan from Ladyfingers Letterpress created these interactive invitations for a destination 40th birthday celebration in France, featuring a map of Paris and punch out paper airplane. So fun!

From Arley-Rose and Morgan: We were approached by the lovely Shelley, an American who was about to celebrate her fabulous 40th birthday in France! Knowing that the journey ahead would be quite the endeavor for her guests, she wanted an invitation that could not be ignored. The result was a letterpress printed and laser-cut invitation that could be assembled – and flown by â€“ her guests.

We started with a map of Paris; highlighting the three greatest French attractions: The Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, and of course, the Chanel store. To the right was a sign pointing to Epernay, the site of Moet and Chandon Vineyard where the party was to take place.

We letterpress printed the design in an antique gold ink on thick, 220lb Crane Lettra paper and laser cut each invitation, which was then housed in an antique gold envelope. Everything was designed and printed in house, with some help from the folks at AS220 who helped Morgan use the lasercutter!

Brittany + Aleksandr’s Southwestern Desert Cactus Wedding Invitations

Our final set of wedding invitations today is a modern spin on southwestern inspiration from Anastasia Marie. Anastasia incorporated traditional motifs like cactus silhouettes and fringe in a beautiful peach and turquoise color palette. Sweet, simple, and so lovely!

From Anastasia: This couple had a southwestern theme for their wedding with peach and turquoise blue as their colors. We kept the invitation itself in soft peach hues and then added the turquoise punch with the envelopes. Printed on smooth white cover paper, these invitations conveyed southwestern all over with the touches of fringe, cactus motifs, and choice of fonts.

Rebecca + Andrew’s Whimsical Illustrated Wedding Invitations

I’m loving the subtle botanical patterns and illustrated motifs in these invitations from Jessica of Moira Design Studio! Jessica mixed calligraphed text with watercolor patterns and illustrations inspired by the farmhouse wedding venue, matching different vignettes to each part of the invitation. So beautiful!

From Jessica: Rebecca and Andrew’s wedding venue features a lovely little orchard, a pretty old barn, a farmhouse, and a small vineyard. We loved the idea of combining all those gorgeous elements, but fitting them all on one invitation proved to be difficult. We ended up mixing the grape vines and peach branches together to make several patterns, featured the barn on the invitation, and then created a little vignette for the envelope liner that combined all the elements in a little landscape and included portrait silhouettes in little  painted frames.

We love mixed media and this particular suite features watercolor and calligraphy. We also print the backs of all our pieces, giving everything that extra added detail. It’s also a great way to include more elements! The back of all the pieces are different, ranging from peach trees, branches covered in peaches, grape leaves, vines, and the matching vignette on the back of the invitation.

Naturally, all the envelopes are addressed in matching calligraphy.

Brynne + Guy’s Modern Vineyard Wedding Invitations

Happy Monday everyone! We’re kicking off the week with these beautiful invitations from Brynne of Harken Press for her own upcoming wedding! As with her save the dates, Brynne drew her inspiration from the vineyard wedding venue in Southern California. I’m loving the nature-inspired color palette along with the wonderful illustrated envelope liner and belly band featuring the venue’s endless rows of grapevines.

From Brynne: Nothing sets the scene for romance like a vineyard. Our wedding invitation suite has modern typography with whimsical flourishes and illustrations. The color palette – plum, forest green, kraft brown, and pearl white – came from the rich colors of the vineyard where our wedding will take place in the fall.

Much like our vineyard save the date, the design was inspired by our wedding venue in Temecula wine country in Southern California. The hand drawn style of the illustrations convey the casual, easy-going vibe of the event. Since the grape vines are literally growing all over the property of the resort, we wanted to get our guests excited by showing the rows of vines and the hot air balloons in the sky in the mornings.

The vineyard invitation suite includes an invitation, reply card, guest information card, kraft envelopes, and a belly band to hold all the pieces together. The invitation and reply card are letterpress printed, while the other pieces are digital printed.

Friday Happy Hour: Spice Islands Punch

Just a couple of weeks ago, I first introduced an amazing, funky spirit called Batavia Arrack, from Indonesia by way of the Netherlands, into our rotation.  I’ve been playing around with it a lot, because it’s so weird and interesting and good, so now I’m back with my second Arrack drink. This one is modeled on classic (and by classic I mean a few hundred years old) hot punch recipes, so it has some pedigree. It’s funky, tart, sweet, spicy, and, best of all, hot on a cold fall night: The Spice Islands Punch. – Andrew

Spice Islands Punch

2 oz Batavia Arrack
1 oz Aged Rum
1 oz Lime Juice
1 1/4 oz Rich Simple Syrup or 1 oz Sugar
Hot Water

Combine the Arrack, rum, lime juice, and sugar in a mug. Fill the rest of the mug with boiling water and give it a stir to dissolve the sugar. Top with freshly grated nutmeg and enjoy!

The funky tang of the Arrack is balanced by the mellow oakiness of the aged rum, and the two spirits give the drink a rich mouthfeel despite all the water you’ll add to the drink. The lime gives the punch a necessary bit of bite, but it’s balanced by the sugar. We used Royal Rose Saffron Simple Syrup to spice up the drink, and give a bit more of an exotic feel to the Punch. And then all that hot water…

OSBP-Signature-Cocktail-Recipe-Spice-Island-Punch-35

Hot drinks aren’t exactly common these days, but some of the oldest (and best) drinks were meant to be served piping hot. This was especially important in the days before central heat, but they can be just as enjoyable today, in these fantastic weeks when the weather has turned cool but we’re just piling on blankets (and drinking hot punch) instead of turning on the heat. This drink was originally meant to be a cold Sour, but then Nole, Sophie and I all got sick, so I turned this into a Hot Punch with lots of cold-killing power – a great alternative to the classic Hot Toddy. Just sip carefully.

One more note: it’s either freshly grated nutmeg or it’s nothing. Don’t even bother with the stuff in the jar from the store; fresh is so much better than store-bought ground nutmeg that it’s not even worth the trouble. It might seem like an odd affectation to buy whole nutmegs and then grate them over a drink, but trust me – there’s a reason most old drinks were garnished with nutmeg, before citrus twists came to dominate. It’s just good.
