Friday Happy Hour: The Cuba Libre
When we started our cocktail column all the way back in 2011, we wanted to introduce classic drinks to a new audience. Along the way, we’ve started featuring more and more of our own drinks, which is ok too, but I want to make sure we don’t forget our roots. Here’s an easy but great spin on a classic summer highball, the sweet and spicy Cuba Libre. – Andrew

The Cuba Libre
2 oz Aged Rum
6 oz Cola
Half a Lime
2 Dashes Citrus Bitters
Muddle the lime in a glass, then add ice, rum, cola (Mexican Coke if you can find it), and bitters. Give it a stir and enjoy.
The Cuba Libre is not actually a cocktail, but rather a highball – a spirit with a mixer, like Scotch and soda or gin and tonic, usually served in a tall glass. They’re great and all, but a little too simple to spend too much time writing about. So we cocktailed it up a bit. (That’s a word, right? It is now.) Throw in a couple dashes of bitters (I remain a big fan of Hella Bitter’s citrus bitters) and you add just enough depth of flavor to call it a cocktail.
Any cola will do in a pinch, but Mexican Coke is just the perfect balance of sweet (using real cane sugar) and spicy. The Cuba Libre is traditionally made with white rum, but I like to use aged rum instead. It adds more flavor than unaged white rum, and its mellow roundness is a nice balance to the cola.
The Cuba Libre has one of those fun popular origin stories that’s demonstrably untrue. American troops fighting the Spanish-American War, so it goes, introduced Coca Cola to Cuba where they met local freedom fighters who introduced rum to the Americans – and the rest is drink history. Except Coca Cola’s own history claims the soda wasn’t introduced to Cuba until 1900, while the war began and ended in 1898. So the story is probably a little less romantic, but a little more in keeping with the universal human urge to add booze to anything at hand and see what turns up, it just takes one random person to figure out that rum and Coke are pretty good together.
Don’t forget to let us know if you try any of our recipes. And if you do make one at home, you can use #osbphappyhour to share photos of these (or your own creations) on Instagram.

Happy Weekend!
It has been such a whirlwind week, with three and a half days at the National Stationery Show, one big Paper Party (more on that next week!), and very very little sleep. And despite the sore feet and general exhaustion that always follows the show, my heart feels like it’s about to burst with happiness after meeting and spending time with so many amazing people at the show. I really do love our stationery community! I’ll be back to share lots more from the show next week, but in the meantime…

National Stationery Show 2014, Part 4
These days I’m loving the dark and moody trend in everything from weddings to interiors. So for this recap from the National Stationery Show, I thought I’d highlight some of the exhibitors that chose to showcase their stationery against bold, deep or dark walls – from the Tahitian-Parisian-inspired collection of Ferme à Papier to the beautiful block-printed goods of Katharine Watson to the neon greeting cards and gift wrap of Fig. 2 Design Studio!

National Stationery Show 2014, Part 3
The 2014 National Stationery Show may have officially wrapped up yesterday (sniff!! miss you all already!), but my coverage from this year’s show is just getting started! And you guys, there were SO MANY amazing booths this year, I’m almost afraid to think of how many photos I took over the last three and a half days. So let’s get right back to it, with one of this year’s most hotly anticipated booths: Emily McDowell! I’m such a big fan of Emily’s compelling hand lettered greeting cards, prints, tea towels, tote bags, and temporary tattoos – and this year Emily added gift tags, sticker labels, and notepads to the collection!
After exhibiting with Crow and Canary a few times, Ashkahn made his official debut in a solo booth this year! I love the mix of foil and neon, not to mention irreverence and sentimentality, in his letterpress greeting cards.
Pineapples were everywhere at this year’s show (seriously), but that was perhaps most true at the debut booth from Hartland Brooklyn. Isn’t that wallpaper (made using custom gift wrap!) incredible? And so many fun greeting cards with gold foil, tropical illustrations, and yes, plenty of pineapples.
Minted‘s booth this year showcased their art prints, gold foil holiday cards, and additions to their letterpress wedding invitation and baby announcement collections. And how gorgeous is that folded paper backdrop?!?
Another new exhibitor, Golden Fox Goods, had a bright white booth with tons of colorful greeting cards, fill-in party invitations, and art prints!
Lots of colorful letterpress paper goods from Studio SloMo – from a calendar to greeting cards to art prints!
And last up for today, another strong debut exhibitor – Paper Bandit Press – with a wonderful collection of letterpress cards and prints!
