Navy Grog

Here’s another classic from the golden age of Tiki drinks, the goofily-named Navy Grog. It’s one of those great old recipes that shows how complex and versatile and unexpected Tiki drinks can be. Grog combines the expected – rum, lime, the usual suspects – with the unexpected (honey, in a tropical drink, what?). But it works the way Tiki should, building layers of flavors into something more than the sum of their parts. – Andrew

Navy Grog

1 oz Dark Jamaican Rum
1 oz Golden Rum
1 oz Silver Rum
1 oz Honey Syrup

3/4 oz Lime Juice
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
2 oz Grapefruit Soda

Combine the rums, honey syrup, lime juice, and bitters in a cocktail shaker filled two-thirds with ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled tumbler and top with the grapefruit soda. Garnish with crushed ice (shaped into a cone if you have the time or energy) and some tropical flowers. Enjoy!

The rums and lime are pretty straightforward, but the honey syrup needs an explanation. Honey doesn’t blend well into drinks on its own, tending to settle to the bottom of a glass in a lump. But honey syrup blends beautifully. Just heat equal parts honey and water until the honey is fully melted. That’s it.

The classic recipe uses white grapefruit juice – something that shows up in more recipes than I would have expected when I first started learning about Tiki – and soda water. I skipped that step by going straight for an all-juice grapefruit soda, a handy way to add fruit and fizz to a drink without sugar or artificial ingredients. But that’s a bit sweeter than grapefruit juice, so in go a couple of dashes of bitters for balance. The result is wildly citrusy and wonderfully rich, with deep rum undertones and a subtle sweetness.

An ice cone with a straw stuck through it is the Navy Grog’s traditional garnish. To make one, fill a Pilsner glass with crushed ice, run a straw through the center of the glass, then cover the ice with water and then drain. Slide the resulting cone, very carefully, out of the glass, then let it sit in the freezer overnight to solidify. Or, you can just get this kit from Cocktail Kingdom.

Grog’s a funny word. It’s also an old one, in use at least since the 1750s, and its origins are probably lost. It has connotations now of rum, and improvised, messy drinks. But it got its start in the daily rum ration that sailors used to receive, cut with water to prevent too much drunkenness, preserved with a bit of citrus juice, and maybe jazzed up with a bit of sugar…sound familiar?

Pink and Poppy Bridal Shower Invitations

These modern bridal shower invitations from Lauren at Charm and Fig feature geometric shapes and fun floral patterns! Lauren drew her inspiration from the brunch venue: The Crosby Street Hotel. Such a fun place for a bridal brunch!

From Lauren: Stephanie’s bridesmaids held her bridal shower at the Crosby Street Hotel in New York, and Stephanie sent them my way for her invitations. We used the Crosby’s funky interiors – with its bright colors, mix-and-match patterns, and unique shapes – as inspiration for the invitation design.

The invitations and inserts were digitally printed and feature Stephanie’s favorite florals, color blocking, and a theme of blush and navy throughout. The shower hosts also wanted to include blank cards for guests to write their favorite memory with Stephanie and attach to their gift. I loved this idea, as it didn’t put guests on the spot at the shower.

Happy Friday everyone! This was one of those weeks that I felt like I was moving too fast to really think about anything. Things might seem all calm on the surface of the blog, but there’s a whirlwind of activity behind the scenes! This weekend we’re looking forward to Sophie’s first soccer class (yay!) and spending some time with family. I hope you all have a lovely summer weekend! But in the meantime…

Copper Foil and Navy Iceland Wedding Invitations

There are so many places in the world that I want to visit someday – and Iceland is definitely in my Top 5! Lyndsey from The Hunter Press recently got married in Iceland, with an intimate ceremony attended by 10 family members. Lyndsey designed the most beautiful copper foil and navy invitations for her destination wedding – I’m so happy she’s sharing them here today!

From Lyndsey: I run a letterpress printing and design studio in Scotland called The Hunter Press and recently had the pleasure of designing my own wedding invitations. My husband and I married in Iceland in an intimate ceremony, surrounded by just 10 of our family.

When my now-husband Keith popped the question 18 months ago, I went straight to work collating ideas for our invitations. As a designer and printer, the chance to create your own wedding invitations is a big deal and seriously exciting, if a little overwhelming! The invitations were designed in the style of a map book and were printed using a combination of letterpress printing and hot foil.

We were engaged in an lava tunnel in Iceland 18 months previous and instantly made the decision to return to Iceland for our wedding day. Our ceremony took place in a tiny black church on the Snaefellsnes peninsula in Western Iceland, surrounded by only the ocean and mountains. We chose to have an intimate ceremony with just our immediate family present and wanted our invitations to be an extra special keepsake for our guests.

The little black church and neighbouring Budir Hotel were both strong design influences. We wanted to keep the invitations as simple and romantic as possible while bringing in an element of Budir charm. The hotel itself was full of dark features, old maps and various wildlife specimens. Dark blues, rough cottons and suede cords seemed the perfect combination for our stationery.

The invitation cover, centre page and back poem were foil printed in copper onto dark blue Colorplan stock. The foldout map insert was letterpress printed in a warm grey onto textured 100% Cotton Saunders Waterford Stock.  All items were drilled at the top and secured with a copper book screw, allowing each page to swivel open. The map books were then tied with a brown suede cord and packaged within a strong Kraft button and string envelope.

Anne + Casey’s Modern Fireworks Wedding Invitations

I love this modern approach to fireworks-inspired wedding invitations from Brooke at Paper & Parcel for a 4th of July weekend wedding! Brooke mixed classic colors (navy and red) and beautiful typography with a modern firework motif to get the light hearted vibe that the bride and groom wanted. And those vintage stamps?? Perfect for this holiday weekend wedding!

From Brooke: Anne and Casey came to me with a very specific vision. They were married on July 3rd at 501 Union in Brooklyn, New York. Their wedding was fun, light-hearted and a true celebration of this special moment in their lives. They envisioned an urban rustic feel to their invitations with a nod to the holiday but without the flags and presidents. Together we came up with the idea of an abstract, modern firework motif with elegant typography.

The invitation was letterpress printed on thick 220# Crane Lettra Ecru cotton paper in navy and red ink. We carried the firework motif and typography into the reply card which was flat printed on 110# Cane Lettra Ecru. A cross-hatch liner complimented the kraft paper envelopes. It was so much fun designing this simple, elegant but whimsical invitation suite for a fabulous couple!
