Raffa’s Hand Lettered Birthday Party Invitations

Designer Chloe Marty created the most adorable hand lettered black and white invitations for her son’s first birthday party – and I’m thrilled that she’s sharing the invitations for his 2nd birthday here today! This year’s invitations paired playful hand lettering with illustrations of some of Raffa’s favorite things and a royal blue, pool, and chartreuse color palette!

From Chloe: For my son Raffa’s 2nd birthday party invitations, I knew that I wanted to do hand lettered invitations. After sketching and doodling some lettering, the idea suddenly evolved and I decided I wanted to add some illustrations as well. I also decided that I didn’t want to do the lettering and illustration myself; I specifically wanted some one else to bring my ideas to life. So, to accomplish the lettering and illustration, I turned to Shannon Snow. I have worked with Shannon several times and I was confident that she could bring my creative vision to life.

Under my creative direction, Shannon created an invitation with lettering on the front and illustrations on the back. The party itself was a park and donut theme, which covered two of Raffa’s favorites. The illustration on the back also included: Raffa’s dump truck, his checkered Vans, his crayons, pancakes + syrup, Asher, Starbucks iced green tea, his Finkelstein kitty, donuts, “coffee” (hot chocolate) from Huckleberry Roasters, his bunny, the park, his red trike, and reading books.

Once Shannon sent me the black and white vector lettering and illustrations, I set to work adding a bright color palette to it all. I paired the digitally printed white and royal blue invitation with a small chartreuse business card-sized enclosure with a photo of Raffa and an explanation that the invitation contained his favorite things. The Paper Souce Lake colored envelopes were sealed with a custom return address sticker and some “donut sprinkle” washi tape. I hand addressed the envelopes and went with “From me to you” Forever stamps.

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you had a wonderful week! It’s hot and humid (and DEFINITELY summer) here in DC, but I’m looking forward to checking a few things off our summer bucket list – like taking the girls (well, Sophie) blueberry picking – and of course celebrating Father’s Day on Sunday! But in the meantime…

This week on Oh So Beautiful Paper:

DIY Southwestern Cactus Wedding Invitations

We’ve always had a love affair with different varieties of cactus and Southwestern scenery as a whole. Just take Emma’s wedding invitation as an example! This colorful design is a fresh take on the theme. Splurging on one stunning letterpress piece for the invitation and adding in your own DIY pieces is a great way to have a luxe invitation for less. Plus, now that we finally launched our brand new wrapping sheets, we finally have paper large enough to be used to make your own gorgeous pattern envelopes to coordinate! Hooray!

Step One: An inner envelope can be an awesome way to incorporate a lot of pattern and personality into your invitations. For this design, we made our own using our Out West wrapping paper. You’ll get three (3) A7 envelopes per 20″ x 29″ sheet. Simply trace the template (if pattern is directional, make sure the template is oriented correctly) using a pencil and cut it out with scissors. Once it has been cut out, fold in each side.

Step Two: Using the photo above, apply double stick tape or stick glue to the sides of the lower envelope flap. Fold it up and press to adhere.

For this design, we decided to use one of our premium letterpress pieces for the invitation to keep it luxe. You could also stamp this piece if you preferred, using our Old West Invitation Stamp and a white A7 card.

Step Three: Stamp your remaining pieces. We used our Vintage Calligraphy Reply Card to make the overall feel a little more formal. For the return and reply addresses, we used our Vintage Horseshoe Return Address, No.2. Please watch this video for more information on inking and stamping an oversized stamp.

Step Four: Believe it or not, all that’s left are the finishing touches! We tied the suite together with a lovely, thin (1 mm) leather cord in a natural color. We also addressed the envelopes to our guests using a calligraphy pen and a whimsical style! We know your guests will be thrilled to receive this gorgeous piece of mail in their mailbox!

Alison + Cody’s Spring Garden Wedding Invitations

How pretty are these pink and green spring garden wedding invitations from Emmy at HelloDesignSugar?! The invitations combine brush lettering with an illustrated floral pattern backing and envelope liner. So perfect for spring!

From Emmy: Ali and Cody got married at Disneyland, which is a place very close to my heart so I was very excited to collaborate with them right away. They got married at the Rose Court Garden in spring, which is this beautiful gazebo full of garden flowers and greenery. This was a huge inspiration for their invitations. They wanted something fun and free flowing and their color palate was perfect with pink and green hues.

Their invitations were a balance between clean and minimal with a quirky fun tone to it. Wording the invitation to match their disney theme, and keeping it fun. The invitation was letterpress printed in pink tones and their save the date was done in green.

Alli + Jon’s Holographic Geometric Wedding Invitations

Forget metallic foils – after this past National Stationery Show, I’m officially obsessed with some of the more non-traditional foil options! Hologram foil, oil slick foil, sparkly iridescent foil… so many options! And today we get to see it in a wedding invitation! These invitations designed by Blake and Irene at Sparkvites and printed by Mama’s Sauce combine holographic foil on black paper with geometric shapes. And the wedding itself sounds like a SUPER fun night!

From Irene: This invitation set was super fun to design. Alli and Jon wanted to incorporate as much color possible in their invitations to reflect their wedding style. From Alli: “If I had to come up with a theme to describe it I’d say…elegant burning man?! 501 Union is already a gorgeous space, but the walls and floor have a dark swanky supper club feel, so I am adding lots of whimsy with glowing multicolor LED orbs on the tables, a DIY LED installation for a large wall with faux fur and LED light strips underneath. The colors of the wedding are ALL THE COLORS. Lots of pops of color with pom poms mixed with flowers.”
