Behind the Stationery: Banquet Workshop

For our next installment of Behind the Stationery, we’re headed to Vancouver to talk with Sarah and Tammy of Banquet Workshop! A mainstay in the stationery world for 8 years and counting, Banquet Workshop’s graphic illustrations are bright and bold (and never quiet) have been translated into everything from art prints and everyday stationery to clothing and jewelry. Sharing about their lives before Banquet Workshop, the strong influences in their work and the importance of staying flexible, here is Sarah and Tammy! —Megan Soh

Behind the Stationery: Banquet Workshop

Tammy: Before Sarah and I started working on Banquet Workshop together I was working in development for a television production company whose main focus was documentary and reality-type television. Think adventure cooking shows, family swaps, life a fighter pilot as well as documentaries that tackle issues around homelessness, political prisoners, civil rights cold cases and local food movements. It was definitely interesting and fun work, but once I had my first child I realized that a more flexible job would be in my family’s best interest. I also always loved being my friend’s hypewoman and had a love of stationery since I was young. It seemed like a natural jump to work with Sarah on Banquet where I can combine both these things!

Sarah: I had worked as an artist and in both commercial and not-for-profit galleries, but had always done design and hand-work on the side. Banquet started with our Sea Animals of the Pacific Northwest screen print, and from there it was a natural segue to partner with Tammy and move into stationery.

We met through a friend when Tammy moved back to Vancouver from living in Montreal and Sarah was working at an artist run centre. We had many (too many!) ideas that we wanted to work on including sun suits for kids, becoming hand bag designers, making kid’s craft kits (which we did do!), but Sarah had already been making prints and cards. We realized quickly that we could build something bigger with making paper products that could potentially support our families. That said, we still freelanced for the first four years or so of starting our business – Sarah doing design and Tammy working in TV.

Behind the Stationery: Banquet Workshop

We are located in beautiful Vancouver on the west coast of Canada where we are surrounded by oceans and mountains. Our location definitely informs our work. When you are 20 minutes to the beach and forest there is definitely no way to avoid the influence. We also have a strong community of creative women that are forever discussing business, art, fashion, colour theory as well as the politics of the day, and they really motivate us as mothers, creatives, and entrepreneurs.

We have a good sized studio with a view of a luxury car dealership and the mountains, where we pack and ship our orders. Tammy works here mainly with our awesome employees. A lot of the magic happens at Sarah’s house in her home-based studio where she can focus on the creative inspired by her garden, a vast collection of vintage books and textiles, and fueled by too much coffee.

Behind the Stationery: Banquet Workshop

We print a few different methods: screen printing for posters and yardage, offset printing for cards, and letterpress for our garlands/ gift tags. All of our printers are truly passionate about what they do and we love the collaborative production process.

If we had to say what makes us unique (such a hard question for two humble Canadians to answer!) it would be our flair for colour and a distinct graphic style. We are also able to charge ahead when inspiration hits and are not often tied to trends. We really do what we want to do and are always looking to make our business more sustainable and interesting. We have now been in business for over 8 years and haven’t run out of new ideas that we want to do! The list grows longer by the day.

Behind the Stationery: Banquet Workshop

Every day is different for each of us but the main things that need to happen always are new products and sales!!! All the other tasks lead back to this—whether it’s reaching out to new retailers or making sketches for new products. We are always trying to figure out if what we want to make fits into the brand. At the heart of everything we do is a desire to put quality goods into the world that are useful, bring happiness, and make people feel good.

We do not really have a daily/weekly schedule but we talk about it all the time! We do need to have Christmas cards ready in May and are tied to the yearly holiday and tradeshow schedule but I think having variety and fluidity is the key for us being able to be flexible.

Behind the Stationery: Banquet Workshop

Part of the creative process is always looking and being open to inspiration no matter where we are. Some of our best sellers have come from a hand-lettered sign spotted at the mechanics, a hilarious anecdote from one of our kids, or an amazing new-to-us houseplant at a friend’s house. Getting outdoors is everything, but then actual libraries are of course our happy place, and colour is always a favourite. It’s amazing what a hit of neon pink can do!

Behind the Stationery: Banquet Workshop

Then it’s a lot of drawing: because we work mostly with vector-graphics, we draw a lot by hand as the initial process and to try and keep things warm. Even with the computer we try to keep that loose feel, quirks and all. All of our type is hand drawn too, with fonts kept as libraries within Illustrator. Colour is where we really get to play, with a specific palette we go back to again and again, dropping in new favourites as we see fit.

Behind the Stationery: Banquet Workshop

Jumping around is an important part of the process too. Sometimes we need to focus on finding a new way to say happy birthday (not so easy!), where at other times we get to work on repeat patterns and styling an entire table setting with our linens, or doing special projects like a recent 4 x 22 metre banner for the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation featuring eight specific water-birds spotted in False Creek, a central Vancouver waterway. Variety is what keeps the design process interesting.

Monday Faves: Statement Earrings

Happy Monday everyone! When it comes to jewelry, I’m all about colorful necklaces and statement earrings this year. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, so a bold necklace and pair of earrings is the perfect way to add a bright pop of color to an outfit. I tend to gravitate towards unusual shapes, from organic ceramic pieces to minimalist brass shapes. I’ve been keeping a running list of statement earrings for a while now, and I thought I’d kick off the week by sharing a few favorites – mostly from Etsy makers and small businesses! Ready? Let’s jump in!

Favorite Statement Earrings

1. These Matisse-inspired earrings from Jules and Clem are seriously some of the most beautiful earrings I’ve ever seen. Made with lightweight acrylic, they come in a variety of color options – but this dark blue and lavender is really speaking to me.

2. I picked up a pair of Four Eyes ceramic earrings from a local pop-up boutique (Brief Assembly), and I’m now completely obsessed with this brand. The color options, the shapes – everything is gorgeous!

3. These brass half-circle earrings are true modern minimalist beauties.

4. I’m loving the deep green color and abstract expressionism-inspired vibes of these round resin earrings

5. Beautiful modern earrings from Two Boss Beads made from handmade clay beads and leather cutouts!

6. Minimalist brass rainbow earrings by Rare Bird Designs! Yes, please.

7. These Mod + Jo earrings combine brass shapes with cotton pom poms and tassels! All my favorite statement earring elements in one place.

8. These wood earrings are so unique!

Are you loving statement earrings as much as I am this year? If so, I’d love to see what you’ve added to your collections – feel free to leave links in the comments!

A Few Recent Etsy Faves

Happy Monday everyone! Did you have a good weekend? DC is observing Emancipation Day and DC public schools and government offices are closed, so my kids get a three day weekend! Anyway, I thought we’d jump into the week with a few recent Etsy faves! It’s been a while since I did an Etsy-focused post, but I’ve been quietly gathering a list of handmade products and wanted to share them with you. A bit of jewelry, some ceramics, a couple of wall hangings, and a couple other odds and ends!

Etsy Faves / April Edition

1. Oh, hello gorgeous textile to hang on your wall! Emily from The Sweet Beast has one of these beautiful pieces in her home, and I always love seeing it on her wall. That pop of pink is just perfect.

2. I’ve been loving the look of stoneware ceramics lately! This blue and white mug is GORGEOUS.

3. How cute is this copper rainbow and yarn wall hanging? I’m thinking about getting one for Common Room Studio!

4. + 5. A big yes to statement earrings! These wood earrings and these acrylic and pom pom earrings are both super fun!

6. BEYOND obsessed with this brass hair clip. So ridiculously chic – I want one in every shape and size!

7. Absolutely beautiful leather-covered vases. I bet they will patina beautifully over time.

8. The prettiest pale pink planter. Done and done.

9. I have several colorful necklaces from Jill Makes and wear them constantly. Thinking about adding this one to the collection!

Bright and Colorful Modern Wedding Invitations

Anyone in the mood for bright and colorful modern wedding invitations? Good! We’ve got you covered with these lovely painterly beauties from Ashley at Fine Day Press. These beautiful invitations feature colorful abstract watercolor artwork with a funky angular shape, a bit of gold foil for sparkle, and gorgeous envelopes in complementary colors. Let’s take a look!

From Ashley: Molly and Elizabeth share a love of color and are getting married at the Fig House, a modern venue in Los Angeles filled with bold, jewel-toned hues. Molly reached out about creating a custom invitation suite with a painterly, brightly hued feel for their wedding. As soon as I read her email, I knew it was a match made in paper heaven!

To start, I created a custom painted design featuring turquoise, bright yellow and hot pink tones that we turned into the invitation’s colorful background. The couple is inspired by hexagons and geometric shapes, also featured in the venue, so we incorporated an angular shape to the invitation design.

We used bold brush lettering to highlight Molly and Elizabeth’s names, paired with a modern sans serif for the rest of the type. The names are printed in a gorgeous gold foil stamp that adds a super special touch, and to finish it off we printed on our double-thick cotton stock. So dreamy! We chose Euroflap envelopes by Waste Not Paper in the shades Pool and Peacock to complement the design of these bright and colorful modern wedding invitations.

Molly told me later that working on the wedding invitations was her absolute favorite part of the wedding planning process, and that Elizabeth’s mom cried when she saw them, because they suited the couple so perfectly. How sweet is that?!? So thrilled I got to be a part of this beautiful couple’s special day!

Spring Style Update with J.Jill

Happy Monday everyone! Today I’m teaming up with J.Jill to talk about bringing inspiration into your everyday routine – and highlighting a few of my favorites from their new April collection! One of my goals for 2018 is to invest a bit more time into myself. I’ve started carving a day out of my week to meet a friend (or someone new!) at a coffee shop or café, explore different shops and neighborhoods in DC. The new April collection from J.Jill is full of beautiful, comfortable pieces that can travel with me throughout my day!

It can be so easy to fall into a style rut as a mom. My fellow moms will know the drill: Get the kids up, dressed, and fed in the morning. Get them to school or daycare. Try to get as much work and/or errands done during the day before it’s time to pick the kids up from school. Get home and make dinner. Bath and bedtime. Maybe a little bit more work before sleep. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Other things fell down to the bottom of the priority list. Things like getting together with friends, exploring this amazing city that I live in, connecting with fellow creatives here in DC, or taking care of myself and making sure I look and feel my best. All really important, but super easy to set aside when life gets busy. The J.Jill April collection is the perfect combination of chic and easy style—all of which are easy for me to keep up with in my busy day-to-day.

When I worked at the State Department, I wore a typical professional wardrobe of suits and separates. Now that I’m a mom and I work from home running a creative business, I need a wardrobe that is comfortable and flexible, but still cute and well-designed. Design is definitely the one thing I won’t sacrifice when it comes to my wardrobe! I need pieces that work for the entire day, from school drop off in the morning through a lunch date with a friend and afternoon errands. I also prefer classic pieces in quality fabric that I know will work in multiple seasons, then I add color and texture through accessories and jewelry. Here’s what I chose from the J.Jill April Collection, and how I styled the different pieces!

Tab-sleeve asymmetric top // 5-Pocket Denim Leggings // Linen buttoned-back sleeveless top // Long & light 2-pocket cardi // Linen tie-waist dress // Denim fringe-trim jacket // Necklace

This linen button-back tank is so comfortable – it also comes in a beautiful pale pink! It’s the perfect top that can be dressed up or down!

I’m loving the asymmetrical hem on this flowy tab-sleeve top. The moss green color is definitely having a moment this season, and it’s so cute paired with a chunky necklace.

This linen tie-waist dress has a super flattering fit and made of a beautiful lightweight linen. I love the idea of layering it with a cardigan or denim jacket (which should be a staple in every wardrobe) in the spring, then just wearing it on its own in the summer. I love the fringe trim on this denim jacket — I will definitely live in this piece for seasons to come!

I don’t know about you, but when I get into a rut, I also tend to feel really uninspired. And inspiration is kind of critical when you run a creative business! Like any business, a large chunk of my work involves staring at a computer screen – writing emails, writing blog posts, the dreaded bookkeeping – so it’s really important for me to get outside and recharge my creative energy! Here are a few of my favorite ways to get inspired:

1. Dedicate time for brainstorming

When you work from home, it can be super easy to get distracted by everyday tasks. I’ve started going to a different coffee shop in DC at least once a week to just clear my mind and jot a few ideas down in a notebook. I don’t bring my laptop and I try not to look at my phone, I just focus on all the ideas floating around in my head and put them down on paper!

2. Grab lunch or coffee with a friend

When I first moved to DC fifteen years ago, it wasn’t known for being a super creative town. Luckily, that has changed a lot in the last few years, and we have more creative people living in DC than ever before! I make an effort to schedule lunch dates with friends at least once a month, which with two small kids is easier than meeting for dinner or drinks in the evening. I’ve also been trying to reach out to creative people in the area that I follow on Instagram but haven’t yet had the chance to meet in real life. I always come away from these in-person get togethers feeling so inspired!

3. Enjoy nature

It’s no secret that I love flowers, and I love to garden. My backyard is my happy place, especially in the spring and summer when everything is blooming! And spring in DC is a glorious thing, with cherry blossoms, daffodils, tulips, lilacs, and peonies later in the season. I always feel so inspired by nature and flowers. I love visiting the outdoor public gardens in the DC area, like Dumbarton Oaks Garden, the Arboretum, Green Spring Garden, and Meadowlark Botanical Garden. I also spend quite a bit of time at our local nurseries picking out annuals for my flower beds and containers. Plant shopping is my favorite special treat at the end of a busy week.

How do you find inspiration in your everyday routine? And fellow moms, how do you find time for yourself in a busy week? I’d love your tips! Let me know in the comments!
