Romantic Botanical Winter Wedding Invitations

Ooooh, I am LOVING the dove gray and oxblood color combination in these romantic botanical winter wedding invitations from Britt of Swell Press Paper Co.! Gray and white is absolutely classic for late fall and winter wedding invitations, but the addition of moody oxblood is just so perfect. Britt incorporated floral illustrations inspired by vintage botany books throughout the invitation suite (complete with the Latin plant names!), along with oxblood edge painting and kraft paper envelopes with a wax seal – not to mention beautiful envelope calligraphy by Olive Branch & Co. So pretty!

From Britt: When Laura and John came to me to design and print their wedding invitation suite, they knew they wanted something traditional and romantic, with a subtle hint of winter for their late November wedding in Baltimore. Laura’s Pinterest board was filled with pages from vintage botany books, so I took it from there, incorporating vintage floral and botanical elements throughout the suite.

The back of the RSVP card is a throwback to the old botany indexes, with the Latin names for the plants listed under the figure key. Another floral element was printed on the back of the invitation to tie it all together.

The invitation suite was printed on 220lb Crane’s Pearl White Lettra with medium grey ink, with oxblood edge painting and custom-sourced oxblood linen paper for the details card to give a pop of autumnal color.

We then tied everything together in a natural kraft inner envelope, topped off with a custom wax seal made from one of the floral elements.

Winter Foliage Wedding Invitations

Happy Tuesday everyone! We ended up getting a few inches of snow (and ice) over the President’s Day weekend, so I thought it would be perfectly appropriate to start with these winter foliage wedding invitations from Julie of Hollyhock Lane for our first post of the week! The invitation suite features hand painted portraits of the bride and groom, along with colorful illustrations and modern brush lettering!

From Julie: This invitation suite was actually a special commission for my sister-in-law. When she got engaged, she knew immediately that she wanted to have a winter wedding. Being so close in timing to Christmas, Kate and Ben wanted to have a glitzy golden feel about their wedding, but they also wanted the design to include firs and winter berry foliage to tie in with the rustic theme of the rural barn where they would be holding their reception.

Kate and Ben liked the idea of having their own painted portraits within the stationery, and they liked the idea of being dressed in their signature casual clothes, hinting at their personality and interests (Kate herself being a fashion designer). However, we all decided this might not work for their actual invitations as it could look a bit too informal. So we decided to include the informal portraits on their save the dates, paired with some simple modern hand lettered script, giving the save the dates a slightly cheeky, relaxed feel.

For the invitations, I adapted the same portraits to feature the head and shoulder shots of the couple, but this time capturing a glimpse of their wedding attire without giving away too many secrets of ‘the dress’.

In terms of format, Kate and Ben loved the idea of a concertina folded invitation, which could include the invitation wording, a map of the church, reception venue and a few informative details, as well as a perforated reply slip which could be removed and sent as a postcard separately.

The whole design was framed with illustrated winter foliage of evergreens, firs, and berries in keeping with the wedding colours and which also repeated on the rest of the stationery. To give it a bit of wow factor and to match the gold used throughout the decorations on the day, we printed the invitation text in gold foil – which was also hand lettered in the same modern brush lettering that I had developed for their save the dates. The stationery was printed on GFSmith Callisto Pearl card, a beautiful off white colour somewhere between warm white and ivory, and with a soft delicate texture which lends itself so well to hand painted illustrations.

A Chocolate-Fig Old Fashioned

We’re back with another infusion! It’s cold outside this weekend, so why not warm up your Valentine’s sweetheart with this winter-appriopriate Chocolate-Fig Old Fashioned? – Andrew

Chocolate-Fig Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe / Liquorary for Oh So Beautiful Paper

Chocolate-Fig Old Fashioned

2 oz Chocolate-Fig Infused Rye Whiskey
1 tsp Cinnamon Syrup
1 Barspoon Maraschino Liqueur
2 dashes Aromatic Bitters

To infuse the whiskey: combine one bottle of rye whiskey with half a cup of cacao nibs and half a cup of dried figs, diced, in a nonreactive container. Let it sit for at least a couple of weeks and, better yet, a month if you can wait that long. Give it a shake every day. Then strain the infusion through a coffee filter to remove all the solids and bottle the infused rye.

To make the cinnamon syrup: combine a cup of sugar, a cup of water, and three cinnamon sticks, broken up into bits, in a sauce pan. Heat the pan gently to melt the sugar into the water, then remove from heat and cover the pan. Let it sit for 20 minutes, then strain out the solids and bottle the syrup.

To make the Old Fashioned: combine the rye, cinnamon syrup, liqueur, and bitters in a mixing glass, then add a few big pieces of ice. Stir well and strain into a chilled rocks glass. Add some fresh chunks of ice and garnish with an orange twist. Enjoy!

What a wonderful drink this makes: smooth, sweetly chocolaty, with warm spicy notes and hints of chewy, wintery fruit.

The best way to get those dark, rich, chocolaty notes in an infusion is to use cacao nibs – the little broken bits you get when you roast and shell a cacao bean. And the best way to get those earthy, fruity fig flavors is to use dried figs; the water in fresh fruit will dilute your infusion. Just know: your infusion will look like a dirty, murky mess before you filter it. I had to triple-filter to remove all the sediment.

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! And yay for long weekends! Do you all have anything fun planned for President’s Day weekend? It’s supposed to be bitterly cold here this weekend, so I’m trying to come up with new fun indoor things to do to entertain my girls. Museums are usually our go-to solution for hot summer and cold winter days – and the U.S. Botanic Garden is perfect for a dose of greenery in the middle of winter. But in the meantime…
