Trisha + Richard’s Arizona Sunset Wedding Invitations

I received the sweetest email from Caroline of Lovely Paper Things with an even sweeter wedding invitation for a couple that reconnected after 40 years apart! For their wedding invitations, Caroline combined their love of Arizona and aviation for a beautiful “Adventure in Love” theme – which was carried through to the wedding menus and seating cards. The design features an ombre watercolor pattern evoking the Arizona sunset, hand cut fringe on the invitation, and lots of pretty hand lettering.

From Caroline: From the very beginning, there was something magical about Trisha and Richard’s love story. The couple went to high school together, followed different paths but kept in touch, and over 40 years later they fell in love! (How neat is that?!!) They came to me looking for a whimsical wedding invitation. We decided that uniting their passion for aviation and  the welcoming Arizona vibe they love so much would create a marvelous “An Adventure In Love” theme to help them share their unique love story!

Their adventurous suite incorporated many elements of flight with a fresh and vibrant southwestern twist. The ombre watercolor background, inspired by the beautiful Arizona sunsets, the hand lettering, hand stamped tags, envelopes and hand cut fringe all exude Arizona’s cheerful spirit.

And oodles of hand painted illustrations of aviation aspects from compasses and mini tickets to pilot wings and birds eye view maps had their guests ready to celebrate the couple’s Adventure In Love!

Monique + Karl’s Teal and Chipboard Letterpress Wedding Invitations

Monique from Metal Doily Press sent over the invitations from her wedding earlier this year – and I love that she chose to print them on thick chipboard! Monique paired the chipboard with a bright teal blue and chevron stripe accents to complement the modern decor in her wedding. So pretty!

From Monique: Our wedding took place at the Old Hollywood-inspired Ebell Club of Long Beach. From the moment we got engaged I had a good idea of the elements I wanted use in the invitations: chevron stripes, Jessica Hische’s Buttermilk font, the color teal, and letterpress printing. My husband and I worked on choosing the secondary font and other details together.

I started by hand lettering our save the date information, which I then turned into a custom rubber stamp. I stamped the design onto thin chipboard in black ink and paired it with a teal envelope to hint at the colors that would be coming with the invitation suite.

The letterpress printed invitation is a 3-color piece: a blind impression chevron stripe at the bottom and text in teal and black. With our thick 100 pt chipboard, the hotel information was easily letterpress printed on one side and the the driving directions to the venue on the other. I chose to flat print the RSVP card as I would be having those all mailed back to me.

Melissa + Graham’s Whimsical Hand Painted Wedding Invitations

I’m always fascinated when artists apply their talents outside of their primary medium, so I was definitely intrigued when textile designer Melissa Kelman sent over her wedding invitations. Melissa was inspired by her love of pattern, florals, and color – all wonderful elements for wedding stationery! Melissa hand painted each design and created rubber stamps with her own calligraphy to use throughout the invitation suite. Gorgeous!

Creative and Whimsical DIY Wedding Invitations and Save the Dates via Oh So Beautiful Paper (6)

From Melissa: I have always had a passion for stationery design and as a professional textile designer I knew I had to create something special for our wedding invitations. The designs were inspired by my love of color, florals and pattern. I was also very inspired by our  venue – The Green Building – in Brooklyn. The building itself has a rustic, industrial feel so incorporating lots of color was a must. As a designer, it is rare that I have a chance to design for myself. My goal was to create something that felt joyful but elegant at the same time.  Each element was designed and painted by myself: it was definitely a labor of love!

The save the dates were each hand painted on kraft card stock. I designed a custom stamp using my calligraphy and stamped each one. I love that each one is a little bit different!

The wedding invitations were originally hand painted in gouache and watercolor. I scanned the artwork in and created the layout digitally. For our day-of elements, I hand carved some stamps and stamped each menu with colorful floral motifs. Our favors were small Muji notebooks, stamped with a hand carved pretzel stamp. The pretzel symbolized New York City and Philadelphia: the two cities we lived in together.

The “bride” and “groom” chair signs were hand painted using gouache on kraft paper. The seating chart was created using a large scrap piece of plexiglass. At an antique store I found a box of old boxing tickets and wrote names and table numbers on the backside. I then used washi tape to attach them to the plexiglass.

Thanks so much Melissa!

Socialology’s Academia-Inspired Business Stationery

Nikki from Akula Kreative sent over this academia-inspired stationery suite that she designed for a wedding and event planning business – and the whole suite is absolutely stunning from start to finish! The color palette of bright orange and gray is so much fun, and the dictionary-theme letterpress printed business cards? So good!

From Nikki: Jasmine, the owner/founder of Socialology, came to us with a Pinterest board filled with orange, salmon, gray, and taupe images, all inspired by academia. The photographs of pencils, erasers, vintage books, and dictionary pages in conjunction with her company name, Socialoogy, made it obvious from the get-go that we’d have the opportunity to expand on a theme with endless possibilities. From the edge painting and cotton paper to the four printing processes it took to make it, this stationery suite is all about quality and attention to detail.

First, we had to do something about the name.  The suffix “-ology” means “the study of,” so “Socialology” refers to “the study of being social.” An academic name for an academic theme. The hurdle, however, was getting people to SAY it correctly, as it was—and is—a bit of a tongue twister. And so we set out to create a logo that would not only be easy to read, but it would have to instruct people how to pronounce it. Enter Andy Luce, who created the beautiful lettering for the first half of the name. He actually came up with options for the entire name, but in the end we landed on a combination of calligraphy for “social” and a serif font for “ology.”

To drive the idea home, we went with a dictionary-themed business card. On the front, we used a multi-level sculptural die to deboss the “book plate” area around the logo. On the back, we letterpress printed the contact information in the form of a dictionary entry, complete with pronunciation cues, part of speech, and definition. In the bottom right, we foil-stamped a dictionary tab.

The postcard-style correspondence card mimics a library catalog card, using the phone number as the reference number. The red tab reads “This book was catalogued on” and leaves a space for a date stamp. At the bottom of the letterhead, we repeated the dictionary-style layout and orange tab, but our favorite feature is the ghost-like quality of the pattern that becomes visible when you hold it to the light. To top it all off, we ordered handmade fabric portfolio folders that Jasmine can use when presenting to potential clients. The outside features a blind deboss logo, and the inside features pockets for the 4″ x 1″ business card and a custom-made client intake form.

Amy + Brandon’s Modern Glam Sunburst Wedding Invitations

Happy Monday everyone! I’m thrilled to be starting the week with a gorgeous set of invitations with architecture-inspired details from Lisa at Missive! Lisa incorporated a beautiful gold foil starburst detail inspired by chandeliers at the wedding venue along with modern sans serif and script fonts. I love the combination of the gold foil with the bright red and aqua color palette. The entire suite is so pretty!

From Lisa: Amy and Brandon’s wedding suite was inspired by interior architectural details at their wedding venue. The chandeliers inside the venue had an interesting starlike pattern that Amy wanted to incorporate into her invitations, so I designed a starburst element which was carried through from her save the date to wedding invitations to thank you notes, where it appears as their new monogram.

Once I learned more about Amy’s vision for her venue decor — from a huge curtain of red and aqua fringe streamers and gold dot garland to jars filled with glowing candlelight, it was clear that her wedding invitation suite needed a glamorous feel. The invitations were letterpress printed in Amy’s bold wedding colors, a rich red and vivid aqua blue, complemented by the shiny gold starbursts.

Modern sans-serif typefaces were paired with an exquisite, flourished script for all of the pieces in this suite. We upped the glam factor with envelopes in bright punchy colors, which were also foil stamped with the couples’ return address. This suite was all about sparkle and shine and I loved that the bride did not shy away from bold color and gleaming gold details!
