Woodsy Illustrated Wedding Invitations

Now that Spring has arrived, we’re itching to break out our hiking boots and spend a weekend exploring and enjoying nature! In the meantime, we’ll just have to gaze at these rustic and woodsy illustrated wedding invitations by Amanda of Wide Eyes Paper Co.! Don’t you just love the illustrated bear for the reply envelope address? Here’s hoping that’s the only bear we encounter anytime soon!

From Amanda: A striking watercolor scene of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains makes these invitations simply majestic. Jenny and Aaron are a hip duo that enjoys the great outdoors and wanted their rustic, quirky vibe to be reflected in all of their stationery. We were so excited to craft up a complete custom watercolor stationery suite for them. Starting with the save the date cards all the way through to the main invitation suite, we dreamed up a woodsy wonderland to announce their rustic soirée.

This invitation suite is certainly not shy of the details. Along with the custom watercolor scenery, we also illustrated a custom grizzly bear that is seen throughout the little details in this set. We intentionally illustrated this bear to creatively ensconce the sender’s address. We used this motif for the custom envelope printing for both the main invitation envelope as well as the reply envelope. Keeping the theme consistent, we also incorporated the Colorado Rocky watercolor scenery onto the envelope liners for a bit of pop and whimsy.

To enhance the natural, organic feel of the suite we printed each piece on 100 percent recyclable French Muscletone Kraft card stock. This paper lends itself to a great rustic appeal, especially paired with the nature-inspired green envelopes.

Jenny and Aaron are not the traditional type, so they opted for an illustrated way to let their guests know about some of the main attractions in the area. Instead of going with a more formal, written information card we created a custom watercolor map. We included many landmarks that are special to the couple such as their favorite Ski Lodge and the local marina Tiki Bar. (Everyone has gotta love a good Mai Tai!)

To spice the invitation suite up even more, we created a custom monogram that is seen on the wood engraved tags. These wood engraved additions are perfect for any rustic occasion and pair well with all of our woodland inspired sets.

Backyard Black Tie Wedding Invitations

Sophisticated yet laid back. These backyard black tie wedding invitations from Ashling of Lotus & Ash welcomed guests to a barefoot, relaxed, and formal wedding celebration. We love the juxtaposition of high fashion and low-key relatability! This is such a fun suite, including nods to the couple’s collegiate days where they first met. The modern calligraphy by Nicole Miyuki and classic serif typefaces make the perfect final detail of juxtaposition to pull it all together!

From Ashling: As a wedding invitation designer, it’s what I’ve come to call the “triple crown” – a collaborative bride with impeccable taste, a film-worthy love story over a decade in the making, and a shared goal to design a suite that was traditional and timeless, but didn’t take itself too seriously.

Backyard Black Tie Wedding Invitations by Lotus & Ash

The mature, edgy, and meaningful invitation suite was such a trifecta. The thread for their wedding weekend was “Black Tie and Barefoot,” and it lived every bit up to its promise. The couple was married in front of the groom’s childhood home, followed by an elegant black tie reception held in the backyard. The celebration ended with an after party in the pool house, and the bride and groom jumping, fully clothed, into the pool.

When Steph and Mark first came to us to design their full wedding stationery suite in less than 5 months, we were beyond excited for the opportunity, but needed to get their save the dates out quickly. Still unsure of what their exact wedding aesthetics would be, we celebrated their days as Stanford students with a save the date that incorporated watercolor university ephemera and a portrait of the fraternity house where they first met. We incorporated a vintage map of Stanford from the couple’s collection as a personal, colorful envelope liner.

As the details came together for Steph and Mark’s backyard, black tie wedding, we knew we wanted to create something that was both sophisticated and formal, yet fun and modern. Aubergine envelopes with brush calligraphy opened to reveal a Carrara marble liner and foil-stamped pocket, inspired by the wedding decor.

The letterpress announcement, printed on the ever gorgeous 2-ply Crane’s Lettra, featured modern calligraphy paired with a classic serif typeface and a blind deboss detail on both the front (the couple’s monogram) and back (a rose pattern). The suite also included weekend details and reply cards with arresting typography, dark floral photography, and haphazard black watercolor swashes, digitally printed on an Indigo press on #130 Classic Crest.

Our personal favorite element from the suite? It’s nearly impossible to choose, but the attire card takes the crown. It featured glassine envelopes filled with colorful swatches to inspire guests attire and the instructions “black tie invited, shoes optional.” In our dream world, that would be the requested dress code for all weddings!

Playful Mountain-Inspired Wedding Invitations

We’re loving these cheerful, whimsical, and playful mountain-inspired wedding invitations from Alison of One + Only Paper, from the circle puzzle save the date (so fun!) to the whimsical calligraphed envelopes. Alison incorporated photography throughout the invitation suite, and the various images add just the right amount of texture to this flat printed suite. The real showstopper is the bellyband that also serves as a map and poster – all in one!

Playful Mountain-Inspired Wedding Invitations by One and Only Paper

From Alison: Melissa and Phil were married in late summer in Asheville, North Carolina, a fun mountain town with its own unique vibe. Melissa and Phil both love puzzles and games, and their fun loving, relaxed vibe set the tone for a super fun wedding suite.

We started with their save the date, and decided to make it extra special; we created a circle puzzle for their guests to solve. It was the perfect way to communicate to guests that this would be no ordinary wedding.

I worked closely with Gabrielle of Quietude Co. on the invitations. As Phil and Melissa are personal friends of ours, we wanted to be sure to do something spectacular and perfectly them for their invitations. The showstopper of the invitation suite was their welcome map. It functioned as a belly band in the envelope, and unfolded to an illustrated map of Melissa and Phil’s favorite spots in Asheville on one side, and a poster that guests could interact with during the wedding weekend on the other. We encouraged guests to visit the spots on the map, and take a photo of their poster, stating that they had #phunwithphilissa, Phil and Melissa’s wedding hashtag.

We kept the invitation clean and simple, with everything else going on in the suite, we wanted it to call attention in its simplicity. The backside featured their monogram. Another special touch was that all of the pieces for this suite were double sided, as we wanted it to feel fun and unexpected, like a surprise.

Something else unusual for this suite was the use of photography. We felt it would be another unique touch, and add color and texture in a more effective way than just using flat colors. We used succulents on the back side of the reply card to tie in the succulents that Melissa and Phil planned to grow and use as centerpieces at the wedding, and the mountains were evocative of the beautiful mountain views throughout Asheville.

The entire suite was enclosed in an oversize navy envelope, with fresh white calligraphy on the front, a more formal touch, but the movement and beauty of the calligraphy kept it feeling fresh and modern.

Camp-Theme Foldout Wedding Invitations

Happy Monday everyone – and happy Leap Day! I always love it when wedding invitations contain an interactive element, and what could be more interactive than a foldout invitation that slowly reveals its details to the recipient? These camp-theme foldout wedding invitations were created by designer Jessica Roush for her own wedding in a Wisconsin state park! Screen printed in two colors by the bride and groom, the invitations start as a 6-inch square before unfolding to an 18×24-inch poster!

Camp-Theme Foldout Wedding Invitations by Jessica Roush / Oh So Beautiful Paper

From Jessica: The initial inspiration for our wedding invitation was a fold-out adventure map: the kind where your eye meanders, with lots of interesting and quirky details. We wanted something outdoorsy and camp-themed to reflect our low key Wisconsin State park wedding.

The invitation is 18 inches by 24 inches poster-sized, and folds up to roughly 6 inches square. The front section you see when you open the envelope is intended to have the main information, the basic when and where.

When you unfold the invitation, more information is revealed, including a hand-drawn map of the park, a map of Wisconsin, an RSVP, a quirky wedding necessities illustration, and an outline of South America. The map of South America alludes to our post-nuptial plan of quitting our jobs and traveling South America for 6-7 months! (You can follow those adventures right here!)

All of the typography and illustrated elements are drawn or hand-lettered by yours truly. They were tediously hand screen printed by my husband and I in two ink colors. The save the dates are printed by SmartPress, and the thank you notes and envelopes are DIY with custom rubber stamps. Creating our wedding invitations was by far one of my favorite parts of the wedding planning process!

Winter Foliage Wedding Invitations

Happy Tuesday everyone! We ended up getting a few inches of snow (and ice) over the President’s Day weekend, so I thought it would be perfectly appropriate to start with these winter foliage wedding invitations from Julie of Hollyhock Lane for our first post of the week! The invitation suite features hand painted portraits of the bride and groom, along with colorful illustrations and modern brush lettering!

Hand Lettered & Illustrated Winter Foliage Wedding Invitations by Hollyhock Lane / Oh So Beautiful Paper

From Julie: This invitation suite was actually a special commission for my sister-in-law. When she got engaged, she knew immediately that she wanted to have a winter wedding. Being so close in timing to Christmas, Kate and Ben wanted to have a glitzy golden feel about their wedding, but they also wanted the design to include firs and winter berry foliage to tie in with the rustic theme of the rural barn where they would be holding their reception.

Kate and Ben liked the idea of having their own painted portraits within the stationery, and they liked the idea of being dressed in their signature casual clothes, hinting at their personality and interests (Kate herself being a fashion designer). However, we all decided this might not work for their actual invitations as it could look a bit too informal. So we decided to include the informal portraits on their save the dates, paired with some simple modern hand lettered script, giving the save the dates a slightly cheeky, relaxed feel.

For the invitations, I adapted the same portraits to feature the head and shoulder shots of the couple, but this time capturing a glimpse of their wedding attire without giving away too many secrets of ‘the dress’.

In terms of format, Kate and Ben loved the idea of a concertina folded invitation, which could include the invitation wording, a map of the church, reception venue and a few informative details, as well as a perforated reply slip which could be removed and sent as a postcard separately.

The whole design was framed with illustrated winter foliage of evergreens, firs, and berries in keeping with the wedding colours and which also repeated on the rest of the stationery. To give it a bit of wow factor and to match the gold used throughout the decorations on the day, we printed the invitation text in gold foil – which was also hand lettered in the same modern brush lettering that I had developed for their save the dates. The stationery was printed on GFSmith Callisto Pearl card, a beautiful off white colour somewhere between warm white and ivory, and with a soft delicate texture which lends itself so well to hand painted illustrations.
