OSBP at Home: Our Backyard Makeover

This post was sponsored, and paid for, by SunTrust Mortgage. All opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the sponsors that make Oh So Beautiful Paper possible!

We’ve been doing lots of home projects recently, but I haven’t shared much of our progress – mostly because I feel a huge amount of self-imposed pressure to make everything “perfect” before I share it. Between the Instagram highlight reel and Pinterest aspiration, it feels like every image should be perfectly finished and styled when I share it publicly. But that’s just silly! I love it when home bloggers share the not-so-pretty progress posts along with the finished product. Plus it’s fun to get a peek behind the curtain and know that our lives aren’t 100% perfectly curated. Besides, my house will never be perfect. As much as I love my home, it’s a tight squeeze for four people, there are kid toys everywhere, not enough storage, and I wish we got about 200% more natural light than is even remotely possible for a 1920s row house. But we’ve done a lot of work on our home, and I’m really proud of how far we’ve come. So today I’m partnering with SunTrust Mortgage to share one of my favorite spaces in our home: our backyard!

The funny part is that a backyard wasn’t even on our list of must-haves when we bought our home, but has turned out to be a saving grace when it comes to our two very young children. There is enough room to hang out and entertain, space for our girls to play, and a couple of small gardening areas that have become my own personal happy place. And even though we aren’t 100% done with the space, we love spending time together as a family out here!

Owning a home is a huge financial and personal milestone. I remember feeling just so overwhelmed when we first started looking for homes, from the mortgage pre-approval process to writing an offer to the home inspection process. We put in several offers on other homes just to be seriously outbid, and many of the homes that were theoretically within our budget would have required major work that we just couldn’t afford. Knowing our budget limitations ahead of time really helped us stay on track. SunTrust Mortgage has a team of experts that are committed to helping future homeowners find a mortgage that fits their life. SunTrust provides the resources and tools to help inform borrowers who aspire to become homeowners or are looking for their next home. Understanding the process helps build confidence! Click here for more information and to download your guide to buying a home!

When we first started looking to buy a home, our “must-have” list was actually pretty simple: all we wanted was to find a single family home with at least two bedrooms and stay in our beloved (but very competitive) Capitol Hill neighborhood. Beyond that, we had to be really flexible! We had a very strict budget, so we quickly discovered that we needed to let go any dreams of a third bedroom, along with central air conditioning, or a finished basement. When we saw our current home for the first time, it met our very minimal must-have list, so we put in an offer right away. The interior had been updated a little bit, there were two nice size bedrooms, a good size kitchen (by DC standards), and it kept us in our neighborhood! The interior design wasn’t exactly our style, but the location made it totally worth it to look beyond the current aesthetics to see the potential in our little home. Plus, it came a major bonus hadn’t been on our list: a backyard (with a garage!). The backyard looked a little different back then, so we had to use our imagination a bit to envision all of its potential. Here’s a little before and after for you!

OSBP At Home: Backyard Before

The before: A dark rear entrance cover that leaked and was unfinished on the inside, and made it really difficult to use the outdoor space effectively. No gate on the stairs to our unfinished basement (hence all the potted plants to block my kids from falling down there). And some super scary, dangerous stairs up to the unfinished attic above our garage that took up a ton of space.

OSBP At Home: Backyard After

After: Goodbye entrance cover, hello wisteria-covered pergola! And yay for a gate blocking the basement stairs! We also removed the scary stairs and replaced it with a wood ladder, although we still need to add a hand rail along the sides.

How we found the hidden potential in our home's back yard!

We originally bought our home in Spring 2013 – so we’ve been here just over four years! During those four years, we’ve tried to tackle one big home project each year. Each project has given us an opportunity to add more of our style to our home and build on the potential we saw at the very beginning. Our first year in the home, we added built-in bookcases to our living room to give us some much-needed storage. The second year, we had Alice – so no home projects! In 2015, we embarked on our bathroom renovation. In 2016, we removed a weird little structure over our rear entrance and built a pergola in its place, which has dramatically improved our ability to use the space. And earlier this year, we finally had central air conditioning installed in our home! Yay! It’s definitely the biggest investment we’ve made so far in our home, but it’s soooooo worth it to finally have a temperature controlled home in the hot and humid DC summers! A kitchen renovation is next on my list if we can figure out a way to swing it.

Back to the backyard! We spend a lot more time out here since we added the pergola last year, and it’s so wonderful to have a space for the girls to play while we drink our morning coffee or run around in the sprinkler on hot summer days. We even hosted the girls’ birthday party in our backyard last year! We keep a bucket of chalk by the back door, a mini trampoline and water table outside during the warm months, and frequently bring a play tent outside to turn the backyard into their mobile playroom. We also love watching for birds (we spotted a cardinal last week!) or looking through the garden for our resident preying mantis.

Even with all the progress in the backyard, we still aren’t 100% done out here. One of our boundary fences (which we share with our neighbor on the southern edge of our property) is rotting and needs to be replaced. I’d also love to add some sort of door to the garage – maybe a sliding barn door that we could use to close off the garage when we have company? We’ll get there eventually. In the meantime, you can usually find me out here tending to the flowers or hanging out with my girls.

Understated and Elegant Cream and Gold Wedding Invitations

These elegant cream and gold wedding invitations by Megan of Ruby the Fox combine woodsy details with feminine glamour – all inspired by the wedding venue on the groom’s family farm in Maryland! A letterpress-printed woodgrain pattern, gold foil text, gold glitter envelope liners, and delicate calligraphy are just a few of the special touches in this invitation suite.

Elegant Cream and Gold Wedding Invitations by Ruby the Fox

From Megan: When Kate, the bride-to-be, reached out to me to design custom wedding invitations and day-of paper accessories for her Baltimore wedding, I knew it would be a treat. I love working closely with couples on bespoke paper suites that truly reflect their personalities and the look and feel of their wedding day! Both the bride and groom are from Maryland, and they got married at the groom’s family farm.

Kate knew she wanted something feminine and elegant but felt strongly about bringing in a “woodsy” element to keep in mind in her fiancé’s interests. To combine those two looks, we went with a blind faux bois pattern printed on double-thick soft white cotton paper on the main invitation as well as a gold foil printed logo featuring antlers and the couple’s initials! The rest of the elements were printed on 110lb cotton paper with a combination of dove gray letterpress and gold foil. The result was super luxe and beautifully tactile.

Subtle touches of blush were incorporated through the outer and reply envelopes as well as a satin ribbon on the program. We also brought in custom spot hand calligraphy as well as gold hand calligraphy on the outer envelopes to keep everything super custom. Although the bride was very aware of involving her fiancé and his likes/dislikes, we couldn’t resist using a bit of sparkle (ahem, gold glitter envelope liners and backers for the menus!) to keep things glam. It was the perfect amount of sparkle! We carried the antler logo throughout the entire paper suite which made for a beautiful, cohesive look.

The final result was understated, feminine, and organic, which was the perfect combination for the couple’s upscale, chic farm wedding! This suite was so much fun to design and it ended up being one of my favorites from the season.

Summer Picnics

This post is brought to you by CJ Affiliate’s VIP Content Service. Thank you to Peapod for sponsoring this post! Save $20 on your first order of $75+ and get free delivery for up to 60 days with code AFF20FD!

Ah, summer in DC! After a long and cold winter, it’s pretty much impossible to keep us indoors once the weather really starts to warm up in late spring and early summer. Our summer weekends usually consist of getting together with friends, going on adventures around the DC area, and balancing our kids’ insatiable desire for time at the local splash pad. Today, in the spirit of 4th of July picnic festivities, I’m sharing one of our recent weekend adventures (including a summer picnic!) in partnership with Peapod, who makes life a bit easier by delivering our groceries – giving us more free time for the things we love!

George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate

Since we live in the city, we try to make sure that at least one of our summer weekend adventures includes time out in nature. I’ve shared a bunch of our favorite outdoor destinations before – including the National Arboretum, Dumbarton Oaks Gardens, and Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens â€“ and each time we head out on an outdoor adventure we love to pack a picnic to enjoy with our girls. Our most beloved destination is probably George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate. There’s a ton of outdoor space where the girls can run around, we can visit the resident farm animals, and I love walking around the historic gardens. On the 4th of July, they have a fantastic display of daytime fireworks, historical reenactments, and even a naturalization ceremony on the lawn in front of the mansion! We get a family membership to Mount Vernon each year and visit at least once every season. And there are plenty of little park areas along the Potomac River near Mount Vernon for a family picnic!

Our weeks are super hectic, and I hate having to give up our precious weekend time for things like errands and food shopping. Summer feels even more precious, since we only have a few short weeks to break away from our regular routine and take advantage of this gorgeous weather! Being able to order groceries from Peapod and have them delivered to our home makes life sooooo much easier, and I’m honestly just happy not to have to squeeze yet another errand into my already busy weekday schedule. I’m also convinced that ordering groceries in advance is better for my bank account, since it forces me to meal plan a bit better, and means less food waste overall. Win win!

A Spring Picnic with Peapod

Ordering our groceries from Peapod is super easy. I usually browse the aisles through the Peapod app on my phone to find what I need (just as I would in person!), or use the Past Purchases function to add frequently purchased items like milk and eggs. I’m also a big fan of the Fresh Meal Kits for extra busy weeks. Whenever we’re planning a picnic, I make sure to add a few extra items to our Peapod order, including snacks that I know will travel well and my girls will enjoy, like crackers and hummus, salami, fresh fruit, and sliced cheese, along with a few pre-made pasta salads and ingredients for sandwiches – mozzarella, basil, and prosciutto on a baguette for the adults, and PB&J for the girls. On our way out the door, I throw all of our food into a cooler and pack a few extra supplies in a basket, and off we go!

A Spring Picnic with Peapod

Sophie and Alice LOVE a good picnic! They’re even happy to lend a hand with set up. It helps to bring rainbow plates and napkins!

Sometimes, even when we stay closer to home during the day, we’ll pack a picnic and take it to our local park for a picnic dinner. It stays light so much later and the evening breezes are so lovely, it’s nice to just hang out on the picnic blanket while the girls run and play a little while longer. I’m all about slow, easy evenings and enjoying the outdoors as much as possible during the summer.

Sophie will be five in September, and I definitely have some clear memories of having picnic lunches and dinners with my dad when I was that age. I’m hopeful that both Sophie and Alice will grow up with fond memories of our weekend family adventures and summer picnics.

Where to find Handmade Deckle Edge Paper

If I had to pick just one standout wedding invitation trend from 2017, it would easily be the return of beautiful and unique handmade paper with deckle edges. Handmade paper is all over my Instagram feed, and with good reason! Handmade deckle edge papers bring incredible depth to a wedding invitation suite, with gorgeous texture and those beautiful, soft feathery edges – and, since the paper is often custom made by hand, it can be made in all sorts of amazing custom colors. Handmade deckle edge paper is also gorgeous in day-of wedding stationery, like menus and seating cards. Today I thought I’d share a few resources for where to find handmade deckle edge paper for those of you who might be on the hunt!

Where to Find Handmade Deckle Edge Paper

For those of you who aren’t familiar with deckle edge paper, we’re talking about the thin, imperfect edges that result from traditional paper making techniques. During the paper making process, a deckle – or wood fence – is placed in the mould to keep the paper slurry within bounds and control the final size of the resulting paper sheet. During the paper making process, some of the paper slurry passes under the deckle and forms an irregular, thin feathered edge. You can also achieve a deckle edge look by hand tearing machine-made paper using a ruler (this invitation suite is a great example of hand-torn paper), and some handmade paper may also be hand-torn to achieve a specific paper size without a deckle. But for today’s purposes we’re focusing on handmade paper with a feathered edge resulting from a wood deckle.

Large Paper Orders

If you’re a stationer or calligrapher looking to carry deckle edge paper as one of your house paper stocks, I’m really only aware of two options for large quantity paper orders: the deckle edge paper stocks from Legion Paper (Arturo, Mediovalis, and Rives BFK among others) and Arpa from OrangeArt. I’ve seen the Arturo and Arpa papers in person and you really can’t go wrong with either option – I’m particularly smitten with the lavender and pale pink papers from each line. If you know of other wholesale deckle edge paper options, let me know in the comments and I’ll add them to the list!

Custom Handmade Papers

Oooh, this is where things get fun! There are tons of independent handmade paper making studios across the country, all making unbelievably beautiful handmade paper. Since these are small studios (often just one person), they produce extremely limited quantities and may require longer lead times to produce enough paper and/or envelopes for a full wedding invitation suite. But the results are SO worth it! Here are a few of the folks on my radar (in alphabetical order):

You can also find some pretty incredible handmade paper shops from around the world on Etsy – from traditional white and ecru paper to some very non-traditional color and material options. If you’re willing to spend a bit of time searching around, I recommend searching for “handmade paper” and “deckle edge paper” to get the best results. Here are a few of the more interesting shops that I found:

A couple quick tips for using handmade deckle edge paper in your wedding stationery:

Handmade papers vary widely in the materials used, texture, and color of each paper. If it’s your first time using a handmade paper or working with a particular paper maker, it’s probably a good idea to order some samples before placing a larger order.

Tell your stationer, printer, and/or calligrapher as soon as possible if you plan to incorporate handmade paper into your wedding stationery. You’ll want to be sure ahead of time that your favorite paper is compatible with your chosen printing method and invitation design. Writing on handmade paper can be very different from writing on machine-made paper, so your calligrapher will need to know well in advance so he or she can make any necessary adjustments in terms of equipment, paper quantities, or even just the amount of time needed to complete your stationery.

Those are my tips! Are any of you planning to use handmade paper in your wedding invitations?

Behind the Stationery: Appointed

Our next installment of Behind the Stationery features DC designer, Suann Song! As a veteran designer in the DC space, Suann (commonly known for her work under simplesong design) launched an all-American made stationery brand called Appointed a few years ago. Taking us through her product development process, team setup, and upgrading offices, here’s Suann! –Megan Soh

Behind the Stationery: Appointed Co.

From Suann: I started simplesong design almost 10 years ago.  It started as an invitation and paper design studio, and then evolved to a branding studio. Over the years the design studio grew and I’ve been really fortunate to work with some amazing companies and brands. I still work with a few long-time clients, but most of my time is dedicated to Appointed.

Behind the Stationery: Appointed Co.

As a graphic designer at heart, much of my work begins and ends on paper and I was always on the search for simple, well-made and functional paper and office supplies. After seeing a need in the market for American-made products, I decided to make my own and that’s how Appointed came about! I took about a year to design the brand, prototype products, research manufacturing partners and develop the business plan. My years of marketing (prior to starting simplesong), designing for others, and working with paper all contributed to the development of Appointed.

Behind the Stationery: Appointed Co.

For a year we subleased a tiny 100 sq ft space from one of our printers. We eventually outgrew that and moved into our dream 3,000 sq ft office in Ivy City in the District of Columbia. It was a big but necessary jump for our growing company and we’re already getting close to outgrowing the current space which serves as a product showroom, work space for our design and operations team, and fulfillment center.  We love being located in the District and it’s a huge part of our identity. The DC community has been so supportive of us and is a big part of our growth.

Behind the Stationery: Appointed Co.

We’ve gradually grown to five full-time staff, seasonal part-time help and occasional contractors. We’re a small but mighty team that manages over 400 wholesale accounts, an e-commerce store, custom product development in addition to product design and brand development.  I’m really fortunate to have a team that loves this company and its products as much as I do and I attribute our growth to our amazing team.

Behind the Stationery: Appointed Co.

Behind the Stationery: Appointed Co.

Each of our team members have very distinct roles so their days vary depending on their role. But we also very much work as a team and when we have a large project or deliverable, we always have an all hands-on-deck mentality. It makes for a great team environment.

Behind the Stationery: Appointed Co.

My days definitely vary but I try every day to dedicate time to certain necessary functions, generally in the following buckets: general operations, managing our team, designing and and product development and marketing. How I spend my time has definitely changed since we first launched 2+ years ago. A lot of my time is now spent on strategy and business operations like managing cash flow, personnel management, and our larger brand and marketing strategy.

Behind the Stationery: Appointed Co.

My goal for this company from the very beginning was to be a national brand and a leader in our space but we have a long way to go. I’m always thinking and working towards that long-term goal. But at the same time, I love product development and designing so I try to carve out as much time as possible for that function.

Behind the Stationery: Appointed Co.

Even though our products vary (from leather accessories to paper goods) our design process is usually the same across product categories. The product development process is fun but definitely takes time. We’re constantly fine-tuning each of our products to see how we can make better or more efficiently.

Behind the Stationery: Appointed Co.

Behind the Stationery: Appointed Co. We brainstorm as a team new product ideas and once we narrow down the general concept of a product, each product follows:

  1. Product research
  2. If we don’t have an existing manufacturing partner we research and vet potential partners. Sometimes this is the most time-consuming part as it can be challenging to find a US-based company willing to work partner with us to make what we’re dreaming up at the price point and quality we need.
  3. Product design — we usually design many, many versions until we come up with the perfect design.
  4. Prototype and test the product — we prototype every single one of our products and we’ll test it with our customers and among our staff.  We want to make sure what we’re creating is functional and durable.
  5. Once we finalize a design we move to packaging development.
  6. And finally, we have a marketing plan for each product, which includes product photography, how we’re rolling out the product and sharing among our customers and retailers.
