Behind the Stationery: Blushing Confetti

We’re going to the land down under in our next installment of Behind the Stationery featuring Ellen of Blushing Confetti! Located in Brisbane, Australia, Ellen’s stationery business – full of confetti and foil – started when she was a graphic designer in the publishing industry. Taking us through her team’s daily routine and her design process, here’s Ellen! —Megan Soh

Behind the Stationery: Blushing Confetti

From Ellen: Before I entered into the crazy world of stationery, I was a graphic designer working away in the print industry. After studying four years at University across design and advertising, I moved to big old London town and was super lucky to land my dream job at IPC Media (now Time, Inc). For anyone that watched The Devil Wears Prada, it was like a scene out of that – only not as mean. I worked with magazine brands like Marie Claire, InStyle, and Look while simultaneously working for clients like IKEA, Westfield, and Puma. It was probably the coolest job I ever had, aside from running my own business of course. When I came back home I kept on with the publishing work until I found my love for wedding stationery. That’s where it all began! Fast forward through a hell of a lot of blood, sweat, and tears and a ready-made line of stationery (and no more bespoke wedding stationery), I slowly reduced my days at the agency until another business and business partner came along. Believe it or not, my jump was made by introducing another business into the mix!

Behind the Stationery: Blushing Confetti

Blushing Confetti is a tongue-in-cheek brand that is serious about providing stunning stationery and aspires to deliver the unexpected to our customers. We offer a whole range of cheeky stationery and are increasingly expanding into gifts. Our agendas have been super popular and we can’t wait to reveal next year’s choices (eeeep!). Most of our stationery goods have a foiled element to it because, if you can’t tell, we are into pretty and shiny things! I have always had a passion for beautiful printing techniques and the business started off with a strong focus in foil. I don’t see that going anywhere anytime soon!

Behind the Stationery: Blushing Confetti

Our HQ is located in the sunshine state of Australia: Queensland. Tucked away in modest Brisbane, we work away in our warehouse and office right by the river. We really do have it pretty good! You will always find confetti in every nook and cranny and lots of random cat and pug references. We’re all about the animals in our office, and if you don’t already follow us on Instagram stories you’re missing out on all the cute dog and cat pics.

Behind the Stationery: Blushing Confetti

A typical day in Blushing HQ always starts with coffee (always!) and music is automatically popped on! #TBT is a popular playlist choice. We generally catch up in the morning and talk through everyone’s priorities and see if anyone needs any help in a certain area. Then we are on our way with our individual tasks, whether that is packing orders, illustrating patterns, designing an e-newsletter…the list goes on! Lots of laughs and food are generally had throughout the day and we don’t take ourselves too seriously unless it’s deadline time!

Behind the Stationery: Blushing Confetti

I spend the bulk of my time these days working on product development. Whether that is hand lettering funny words for cards or figuring out what paper stocks we will use, it sure does keep me busy! I think I am pretty lucky in the way of not having many daily business struggles, however come deadline time for a product run or a trade show things can get tough, especially internationally. Lots of planning goes into our yearly activity of traveling across the world to New York, whilst we totally love it and wouldn’t change it for the world. When something goes wrong, it feels a thousand times worse when you are in a place you don’t know. Luckily I get to call on some great local industry friends if I ever am in a bind!

Behind the Stationery: Blushing Confetti

Our design process is a little different depending on the product type, but we seem to have it downbeat (albeit somewhat chaotic at times). Our cards are usually thought up anytime throughout the year and have usually come from experiences we have had with a partner, friend or ex-boyfriend. Our experiences come into these card themes and we just start lettering until we have the perfect combination of words. The team normally all have a say in what the end result is.

Behind the Stationery: Blushing Confetti

When it comes to designing an agenda for instance, we decide what formats we want to do based on what people previously have ordered from us (big, small, medium sized, spiral, etc). Then we work with both local artists and our internal design team to design some creative based on the theme we have all decided on for that season. After design time and many, many rounds of proofing, our agendas are off to be turned into samples. From there we decide if we want to change anything or sometimes we even scrap that design if we think it turned out differently than we hoped. Once all those decisions have been made we are on our way to final production and everyone’s goodies are shipped across the world (that’s the best part!).

Los Olivos Illustrated Watercolor Wedding Invitations

We love that weekend itinerary maps are becoming more of a mainstay in wedding invitation suites, and we absolutely swoon over maps with impeccable attention to detail and execution. Enter Michelle of Honey Paper (a talented member of our Designer Rolodex) and these beautiful Los Olivos illustrated watercolor wedding invitations. Drawing inspiration from the couple’s Los Olivos venue in the Santa Ynez Valley, Michelle illustrated a stunning watercolor map with the most darling landmarks. We love how clean and crisp the suite is, allowing the watercolor illustrations to shine through, while the palm frond liner adds the perfect touch of texture to bring it all together!

From Michelle: During a weekend getaway from Los Angeles to the vineyards and tasting rooms of the Santa Ynez Valley, Elizabeth and Michael discovered a piece of California history, and their future wedding venue, in the charming town of Los Olivos. The venue, Mattei’s Tavern, is an utterly charming and thriving restaurant as well as an iconic Santa Ynez Valley landmark. The handsome white clapboard exterior, boxed eaves, looping wisteria and pepper trees recall a time of horse-drawn carriages, parlors filled with wicker chairs and generous helpings of shepherd’s pie. Return trips to the Valley found them back at this corner of beloved land enjoying evenings spent, “under the palms and stars.” Mattei’s Tavern was built by Swiss-Italian immigrant Felix Mattei in 1886 along what was once a bustling stagecoach and railway stop through San Marcos Pass.

Elizabeth and Michael wanted the invitation to reflect the uniqueness of the 130 year old venue and the essence of Los Olivos. We created a hand illustrated watercolor map of Los Olivos oriented to Mattei’s Tavern whose corners emphasize robust palm fronds and clusters of wisteria. The keepsake map was a must so guests would arrive in the Santa Ynez Valley with a sense of its story and a ready appreciation for its natural beauty.

The invitation was flat printed on a brilliant white Crane Lettra paper so the original hand illustrated watercolors would render vibrant and crisp. The hearty palm frond motif provided continuity between the pieces both in color and story. We used a subtle mossy green for all the text which complemented the original illustration on the envelope liner. One of our favorite details is the initial monogram with mirrored feathered palm leaves and extended stem.

Inspiring Calligraphers: Bien Fait Calligraphy

Hey everyone! If you’re someone who pores over the little details, (like I do), I think you’re in for a real treat today. When I was choosing images for this post, spotlighting calligrapher Joi Hunt, I just couldn’t narrow down all the images of oh-so-pretty envelopes. Because when you think about it, an envelope is often the very first impression of the big event. Let’s go look at some beautiful lettering work! Here’s a peek at Bien Fait Calligraphy. Jen

What’s in a name? Bien Fait is a French phrase that means “made well”, which is a nod to the way Joi approaches calligraphy — made well and made with love. Joi specializes in pointed pen calligraphy styles. Favorite projects? Says Joi: “My favorite projects are collaborations between other creatives, like stationery designers and watercolor artists. All our strengths come together to create something more beautiful than each individual element.”

Joi considers herself a classically trained calligrapher, but that doesn’t mean she’s a perfectionist. “The beauty of handwritten script is the variation, the personality and emotion that comes through mind, heart, and hand, onto paper,” says Joi.

On envelopes, Joi says, “I love to address envelopes! Each one is a little piece of art, totally unique and a labor of love. A client that gives me the freedom to flourish a name or address is a bonus.” And of course, it’s so special to see a name beautifully penned.

Joi finds inspiration for her lettering work from historical examples. “I love to study calligraphy books and I am lucky to own quite a few vintage books. I could spend hours with my nib, dipping it into ink, and listening to the sound of that nib on paper,” she shares.

Sending a big thanks to Joi of Bien Fait Calligraphy for sharing a look into her fanciful, beautiful lettering work!

Romantic Deckle Edge Wedding Invitations with Red Wax Seal

Ethereal calligraphy, soft deckled edge paper, and bold red wax seals? Yes, please! We’re loving these romantic deckle edge wedding invitations by Tricia of Fourteen-Forty! The clean, minimalist design is absolutely dreamy on the beautiful handmade paper – and the pop of red in the wax seal is so fun!

From TriciaWhen my good friends Clara and Edward came to me for their invitations, all kinds of inspiration and ideas came to mind. They wanted something romantic and modern and throughout the process, was pleasantly surprised again and again by their attention to design and detail. In the end, this deckled edged suite was truly a labor of love!

Up until now, our clients have always preferred a cleaner edge and thus we always hand tore our invitations. Clara and Edward fell in love with deckled edges and so we used them for both the invitation pieces and envelopes! We just love the texture and naturally frayed edges of deckled edge paper. After testing all kinds of combinations we decided ivory and lead gray were the perfect combination: subtle and modern. Their names were calligraphed and printed in gold foil. To top it off we added a vellum overlay tied to the invitation by gold string and a bold red wax seal.

It was clear from the start that calligraphy, both hand and digital, would play a large role in their suite. Each envelope was hand calligraphed and completed with an array of vintage stamps inspired by the couple’s personal interests. The bright colored stamps were a fun contrast to the subtle sparkle of the gold ink. For their day-of pieces we knew we couldn’t say goodbye just yet to the red wax seal and so we sealed both their menus and escort cards! Each escort card was sealed with the guests’ table number. On the day, it was so much fun seeing a hundred red seals side by side!

We wanted to make sure that the details didn’t end there and so we also tied each program with the same gold string we used for their invitation. While it isn’t necessary to match your day-of pieces to your invitations, in this case, we were so glad Clara and Edward were excited to bring back aspects of their invitations on the day.
