Urbanic Faves | California Dreaming

Good day sunshines!  When I was debating what to put up for my monthly guest post here on Oh So Beautiful Paper, I decided to pick something very close to home (okay well technically my present home) – Los Angeles!  As some of you might already know, I’m originally from the East Coast.  Believe me when I tell you that it definitely took a while to adapt to the lifestyle here on the West.  I’m proud to say that these days my affection for both sides of the country is equal and my heart has become bi-coastal. There really is so much to love here in L.A.  The colors, the optimism, the sunsets, and we cannot forget about the tacos!

Alana’s Otomi Foil + Acrylic Bridal Shower Invitations

Happy Monday everyone! We’re starting the week with these beautiful bridal shower invitations from Alana and Krystal at Vellum & Vogue – for Alana’s own bridal shower! Alana and Krystal chose a festive otomi pattern in a gorgeously subtle neutral color palette. The invitations even feature pearlized white foil printed on acrylic!

From Alana + Krystal: At Vellum & Vogue, we love incorporating unique printing methods and materials into our work. Alana’s bridal shower had a Mexican theme, so we wanted to create an invitation suite that incorporated a traditional otomi pattern but also had a modern sensibility.

We decided to foil stamp a pearlized otomi pattern on clear acrylic to give the invitation a soft, modern feel. We then foil stamped the event details in white for contrast. Alana loves neutrals, so our accent materials used a taupe and silver color palette. The invitation was accompanied by a taupe linen backer and finished with a frayed fabric and suede cord wrap.

Each invitation was mailed in a white box filled with white and silver shredded crinkle paper. We sealed each box with a taupe wraparound address label that used the same otomi pattern.

DIY Tutorial: Clay Hand Place Card Holders

Today, I have a quirky little project whose uses are practically endless. I’m showing how to use oven-bake clay to create little hands perfect for holding everything from name cards to reminder notes to air plants. Knife
Paint
Paintbrushes
Aluminum Foil

Step One: Use the knife to cut four roughly equally-sized pieces of clay.

Step Two: For each hand, roll one of the pieces of clay into a ball, and flatten into an oval.

Step Three: Use the knife to cut the oval into the shape of a hand as shown.

Step Four: Peel away the excess clay, and use your fingers to shape each clay finger and round out each clay fingertip and the palm. To get rid of any of your fingerprints left behind, place a piece of paper on top, and gently roll something like a rolling pin or paint bottle across the paper.

Step Five: Carefully peel the hand off of your work surface. Curl the thumb and forefinger up to touch one another, and bend each of the other fingers up.

Step Six: Place a small piece of folded aluminum foil between the thumb and forefinger, and bake according to the directions on the clay packaging. (Mine was 15 minutes at 275 degrees.)

Step Seven: Paint on some fingernails. I personally have a hard time keeping little pieces of lint (and cat hair) out of my clay projects, so I also use white paint to cover up any mishaps. Enjoy!

Luckily I have a husband that knows how to mix a stiff drink – I have a feeling we’ll need a couple this weekend. But in the meantime…

Ali + Zach’s Leather and Gold Foil Passport Save the Dates

These stunning leather and gold foil passport save the dates – for a destination wedding in Italy! – from Arley-Rose and Morgan of Ladyfingers Letterpress are just beyond incredible. From the gold foil monogrammed covers, to the custom envelopes, to the incredible 18 letterpress printed pages in between, I’m just in awe. Take a look!

From Arley-Rose and Morgan: When you invite 125 of your favorite people to spend a week in Italy for the wedding of your dreams, no ordinary save the date will do. For Ali and Zach, the sky was the limit, so we created these letterpress printed and gold foil stamped hand-bound leather booklets to let guests know that this was not going to be any ordinary wedding!

Each booklet arrived in a thick, custom designed letterpress printed (and wax-sealed!) envelope that opened to reveal a map of Italy printed in teal on the inside. The leather covers of the booklets, emblazoned with a gold foil custom monogram, were crafted from raw leather and hand-dyed to match the exact color that Ali and Zach favored. Each booklet was hand-stitched and enhanced with another wax seal.

Marbled Florentine end papers were imported from Italy and a letterpress book plate was tipped into the first page to greet each viewer. As you paged through the interior of the 18-page booklet, you were met with photos of the couple and letterpress printed pages that outlined the exciting week ahead!

As one of our more complex suites we’ve ever designed, we documented the creation of this project on our blog. We were so excited to discover that this Save the Date was awarded 2014 Louie Award for Print and Production Excellence!
