Best of 2016: Wedding Invitations

We still have some fun posts planned for this week, but since my goal for next week is to truly relax and rest my brain (if such a thing is even possible with two small children), I’m sharing my annual “Best Of” recaps with you this week! First up, the best wedding invitations of 2016! After eight years of blogging, my mental timeline can get kind of fuzzy, so I love doing these round ups and looking back to see all of the amazing things that I had the opportunity to share with you over the past year. And truly, there was so much gorgeousness in 2016. Tropical motifs, watercolor, metallics (especially copper), elegant calligraphy, playful hand lettering, and a return to handmade paper and deckled edges in a MAJOR way in the second half of the year. What design trends do you think 2017 will bring to us? I can’t wait to see!

Seasonal Stationery: 2017 Calendars

As we get ready to wrap up the year, I wanted to share at least one round up of beautiful 2017 calendars! I’m not really one for new year’s resolutions, but I always look forward to the optimism of a new year. The promise of a fresh start. A new calendar on the wall and a new date in the top corner. And I don’t know about all of you, but I’m looking forward to waving goodbye to 2016 and welcoming 2017. So let’s get some fresh new calendars on those walls! I’m sharing twelve of my favorites below, but if you’re looking for even more calendar options, you can find 100+ more 2017 calendars in the Market List here!

2017 Calendar Round Up

1. If you’re like me and occasionally forget to turn the page of your monthly calendar, try this tear-away wildflower calendar from Hartland Brooklyn – which you can repurpose as an art print at the end of the year!

2. This amazing 2017 Collaborative Calendar features artwork and words from 14 mothers (and some of my favorite artists), including Liz Libre of Linda & Harriett, Erin Jang of The Indigo Bunting, Meg Gleason of Moglea, Lena Corwin, and Samantha Hahn. All proceeds from the calendar will benefit Room to Grow, an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of babies born into poverty, throughout their first three years of development.

3. I will always say yes to pie. This year’s calendar from Wild Ink Press features twelve illustrations of our favorite pie recipes!

4. I’m absolutely obsessed with this botanical calendar by Esther Clark. Each month features Esther’s calligraphy and beautiful seasonal botanical illustrations, including my beloved hellebores, anemones, peonies, clematis, and more!

5. Beautiful (and colorful!) abstract art prints plus plenty of space to keep track of appointments in this wall calendar from Fine Day Press

6. It really just doesn’t get more classic than this: black text on white paper and gold borders in this desk calendar from Sugar Paper

7. Rifle Paper Co. always produces an amazing selection of calendars – this constellation calendar is my favorite this year!

8. Idlewild Co.’s Ladies of Literature wall calendar features 12 hand painted portraits of notable literary ladies, including Jane Austen, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Emily Bronte, J.K. Rowling, and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

9. A year of flowers sounds just about right to me, especially when paired with beautiful photographs by Whimsy and Spice.

10. Need a little extra motivation in your day? Try this copper foil Positivity Calendar from Fox & Fallow!

11. Loving this year’s travel-inspired calendar collaboration between Good on Paper and Jennifer Young Studio. Each page features a beautiful photograph inspired by Jennifer’s travels across the United States, with two months per page and space at the bottom for notes.

12. With gold foil and a solid brass base, this desk calendar from Blushing Confetti is the perfect way to dress up your office!

Elegant Monochromatic Calligraphy Wedding Invitations

This is the second time this year we’ve featured invitations inspired by The Hotel Emma in San Antonio! These elegant monochromatic calligraphy wedding invitations by Nicolette of Lazywood Lane feature custom illustrations of the hotel, along with Nicolette’s modern and organic calligraphy and vintage-inspired serif type selections. Add in a dusty blue envelope liner made from handmade paper and a gorgeous white wax seal, and you’ve got one seriously stunning invitation suite.

From Nicolette: The Hotel Emma has quickly become a landmark in San Antonio, inspiring me to create this invitation suite and illustrate the face of the building, which was once a 19th century brewery. The design was printed on a cotton paper with hand deckled edges.

I carried the illustration through both the save the dates and the wedding invitation. The illustration was the main focus of the square save the dates, so I kept the rest of the design simple and used a typeface inspired by the original font family that was used to print the classic works of Voltaire. The hotel has a charming library with classic industrial decor, in which I imagine these historical specimens would fit comfortably.

The Hotel Emma has custom seersucker robes in their rooms, so when I saw this matching shade of chambray blue handmade paper from Share Studios, I knew it would make the perfect envelope liners. They made for a pop of color that was both neutral and refreshing. The entire design is very simple, focusing on my calligraphy and the venue illustration, so I decided to leave the natural deckled edge on the liners.

The white envelope was sealed with matching white wax and a blank seal. Again, to keep the focus on the simplicity of the design and the shade of dusty blue inspired by their bathrobes and the hotel tile that was chosen by the American design firm, Roman and Williams.

The envelopes were addressed in custom mixed blue-gray ink and lettered in an organic, perfectly imperfect calligraphy hand. I strive to make my hand feel authentic, yet refined. This is my signature calligraphy style, which I wanted to appear delicate and effortless.

To complete the natural, delicate feel of these invitations, I tied everything up with fine kraft paper twine which I wrapped around the suite in an intentionally imperfect way.

Playful Mountain-Inspired Wedding Invitations

We’re loving these cheerful, whimsical, and playful mountain-inspired wedding invitations from Alison of One + Only Paper, from the circle puzzle save the date (so fun!) to the whimsical calligraphed envelopes. Alison incorporated photography throughout the invitation suite, and the various images add just the right amount of texture to this flat printed suite. The real showstopper is the bellyband that also serves as a map and poster – all in one!

Playful Mountain-Inspired Wedding Invitations by One and Only Paper

From Alison: Melissa and Phil were married in late summer in Asheville, North Carolina, a fun mountain town with its own unique vibe. Melissa and Phil both love puzzles and games, and their fun loving, relaxed vibe set the tone for a super fun wedding suite.

Playful Mountain-Inspired Wedding Invitations by One and Only Paper

We started with their save the date, and decided to make it extra special; we created a circle puzzle for their guests to solve. It was the perfect way to communicate to guests that this would be no ordinary wedding.

I worked closely with Gabrielle of Quietude Co. on the invitations. As Phil and Melissa are personal friends of ours, we wanted to be sure to do something spectacular and perfectly them for their invitations. The showstopper of the invitation suite was their welcome map. It functioned as a belly band in the envelope, and unfolded to an illustrated map of Melissa and Phil’s favorite spots in Asheville on one side, and a poster that guests could interact with during the wedding weekend on the other. We encouraged guests to visit the spots on the map, and take a photo of their poster, stating that they had #phunwithphilissa, Phil and Melissa’s wedding hashtag.

We kept the invitation clean and simple, with everything else going on in the suite, we wanted it to call attention in its simplicity. The backside featured their monogram. Another special touch was that all of the pieces for this suite were double sided, as we wanted it to feel fun and unexpected, like a surprise.

Something else unusual for this suite was the use of photography. We felt it would be another unique touch, and add color and texture in a more effective way than just using flat colors. We used succulents on the back side of the reply card to tie in the succulents that Melissa and Phil planned to grow and use as centerpieces at the wedding, and the mountains were evocative of the beautiful mountain views throughout Asheville.

Playful Mountain-Inspired Wedding Invitations by One and Only Paper

The entire suite was enclosed in an oversize navy envelope, with fresh white calligraphy on the front, a more formal touch, but the movement and beauty of the calligraphy kept it feeling fresh and modern.
