2017 Gift Guide for Creatives

Every year, I try to share a few favorite gift ideas for artists and designers, and this year I thought I’d broaden things a bit to include some gift ideas for all creatives – from aspiring artists to hobbyists to weekend DIYers. There are definitely a few things in this gift guide that I use on a regular basis, along with a few other things that are on my own personal holiday wishlist. So whether you’re looking for the perfect gift for someone who loves dabbling in creative pursuits or maybe just want to forward this on to your significant other to help them in their holiday gift purchases, hopefully there’s a little something for everyone below!

2017 Gift Guide for Creatives

1. Creatives of all types and backgrounds need to photograph their work, and ideally showcase it in the best possible light. Styling boards can seriously elevate the quality of those photos, but they’re definitely an investment. I’m a big fan of the double-sided styling surfaces from Erickson Woodworks and the plaster surfaces of One Stone West

2. I’ve been wanting to try weaving, and the colors in these weaving and roving packs from fiber artist Maryanne Moodie are just gorgeous. Just don’t forget the loom!

3. + 4. If someone is just starting out in a creative field, they might not have the resources to invest in beautiful styling props. I love these silk table runners from Tono & Co – they look absolutely stunning in styled shoots and can even double as a background for product photos. Ribbons also make the most beautiful styling props in photos, and I love these new ribbons with black edges from Angela Liguori!

5. Small dishes, like these gorgeous ring dishes from Suite One Studio, are great for holding ephemera on a desk – or even as props for styled photos!

6. Zojirushi mugs are the perfect way to keep beverages hot or cold throughout the day. Give one for hot beverages, and another to have ice cold water available throughout the day – it’s important to stay hydrated!

7. This adorable zipper pouch from Ban.do is the perfect way to organize pens, pencils, and paint brushes.

8. + 9. Watercolor supplies make a lovely gift for an aspiring artist. I’m a big fan of this Koi travel watercolor palette for beginner artists, and Jenna from Mon Voir sells kits with professional level supplies that are great for intermediate artists and hobbyists. Don’t forget a pad of high quality watercolor paper. My favorite is Stonehenge by Legion Paper

10. These zippered pouches are a great way to stay organized! They’re basically modern trapper keepers, with tons of pockets both inside and outside, and can even fit up to a 13″ Macbook Pro! Plus, they come in some seriously fantastic colors.

11. Houseplants are a great gift for someone who works from home. Check your local hardware store, or even Home Depot and Lowe’s for great deals on low-maintenance plants. These googly eye planters totally crack me up – I’d love to have a set for my home office!

12. It took me the longest time to invest in a quality paper trimmer – and it always drove me nuts when I needed to cut something in a straight line for a project! I have this hefty bypass paper trimmer and love it. Of course, this wouldn’t cut it for a professional stationer, but for DIY projects at home it’s absolutely fantastic.

13. I have this Silhouette CAMEO and use it all the time for DIY projects (like these DIY Matisse-inspired pumpkins!). You can use it to cut out vinyl decals, create custom fabric transfers, and even create custom cut paper pieces!

*Also, creative classes and workshops make a wonderful gift for creatives! You can do some research to find local workshops in your area, or check out online workshops if that isn’t an option. I highly recommend the Modern Calligraphy Summit for aspiring calligraphers, and these online floral workshops from Nicole of Soil + Stem look amazing! If you’re in the DC area, my friend Michele teaches calligraphy and brush lettering workshops – and we’ve got lots of fun workshops planned at Common Room Studio in December and 2018!

DIY Matisse-Inspired Pumpkins

With two little kids in the house, our Halloween tends to be more fun and colorful – less creepy and scary. So today I’m sharing a Halloween pumpkin tutorial inspired by fine art! The idea for these pumpkins came as I was making this Matisse-inspired paper garland a couple of weeks ago. The shapes are just so fun and colorful, I thought they would be great on Halloween pumpkins. These DIY Matisse-inspired pumpkins are super easy to make, and I’m sharing my template below so you can make your own!

DIY Matisse-Inspired Pumpkins

I love, love, love the way the colors pop against the white pumpkins, but they’re also great against black faux pumpkins or colorful painted pumpkins! The pink painted pumpkin is so sweet, don’t you think?

DIY Matisse-Inspired Pumpkins

I adapted the Matisse-inspired shapes that I originally created for the garland to work on a pumpkin, making them slightly smaller for large pumpkins and adding a set of smaller shapes to use on tiny pumpkins and mix with the larger size shapes for variety. And the shapes are really fun when mixed all together in a random pattern on the pumpkin!

DIY Matisse-Inspired Pumpkins

The supplies for this project are pretty simple: you’ll need matte craft vinyl in a variety of colors (I used pink, orange, yellow, green, teal, purple, and white) and a Silhouette Cameo or Cricut Explore cutting machine. If you don’t have one of those machines, you can still use our template to trace the shapes onto the vinyl and cut the shapes out by hand – but it will go a LOT faster with a cutting machine. You can download our templates at the bottom of the post!

DIY Matisse-Inspired Pumpkins

To make the DIY Matisse-inspired pumpkins:

Step 1. Download our templates at the bottom of the post and use your Silhouette Cameo or Cricut to cut the shapes from each color of vinyl. You can do a colorful rainbow like I did (best if you’re doing a big group of pumpkins) or keep things simple with just one or two colors!

Step 2. Carefully peel individual shapes from the adhesive backing and apply to the pumpkin like a sticker. I found it easiest to start with some of the larger shapes randomly scattered around the pumpkin surface, then fill in with the smaller shapes as I went. I really didn’t have a plan, so you can totally just wing it! If you place a shape and then change your mind, you should be able to move it by very carefully peeling the vinyl from the pumpkin and moving it to a new spot.

Step 3. Continue placing vinyl shapes until you’ve covered the entire pumpkin, and enjoy!

New York City Inspired Floral Watercolor Wedding Invitations

Is there anything more beautiful than New York City in the fall? Central Park practically explodes with gorgeous fall foliage, and all the brownstones decorate their stoops with pumpkins and colorful autumn blooms. Becca of Suite Paperie created these whimsical New York City inspired floral watercolor invitations for a bride and groom tying the knot in the city. The invitations feature a color palette of rich autumn hues like purple and deep green, along with an illustrated map of Manhattan and soft watercolor florals.

From Becca: Kelly and Bennett wanted to set the perfect early Autumn New York City tone for their mostly out of town guests, and we set out to do just that! Oversized fall blooms were watercolor painted in rich purples, dusty roses, blushes, and deep greens, and paired perfectly with their wine and gray whimsical script and serif lettering on the main piece of their invitation suite. Digitally printed on duplexed soft white cover stock, the invitation was both colorful and luxuriously thick.

We created a custom map of Manhattan showcasing the neighborhoods and venues for the events throughout the wedding weekend. We also made sure to highlight important landmarks and neighborhoods that had special meaning to the couple, like their favorite place to sit and people watch, Washington Square Park, and where Bennett proposed to Kelly, Greenwich Village.

The back of the folded map listed a detailed schedule of the weekend, including welcome drinks and a post-wedding recovery brunch, a NYC must-have! The couple also wanted to include little fun facts and tips about New York City, like leaving plenty of time to get to their ceremony on a Friday afternoon, during rush hour, and encouraging guests to walk from the church to the reception at The High Line Hotel because, well, it’s New York City after all!

We carried the watercolor look onto the RSVP card and the front of the map insert. On the response card, we created mini watercolor animal silhouettes that served as meal option indicators. Additionally, on the front of the map insert, an oversized wash of minty green watercolor gives the suite a fresh, cheery punch.

My absolute favorite part of the suite is the envelope liner. We enlarged and layered the watercolor flowers to create a beautiful pattern and then digitally printed them on vellum for a subtle, but cohesive look to the suite. Finally, we wrapped the pieces in a berry colored double-thick cotton twine bringing out the rich colors in the suite.
