Modern Holographic Foil and Enamel Pin Wedding Invitations

Um, YES. With shiny and colorful holographic foil and a custom enamel pin keepsake, these wedding invitations are right up our alley! Designer and lettering artist Rachael Gibilterra designed these stunning modern holographic foil and enamel pin wedding invitations and save the dates for her own special day. We can’t imagine a better way of sending fun vibes to all of your guests than a wedding invitation full of holographic foil and mailed INSIDE hologram envelopes!

From Rachael: It all started with my main goal for our wedding: be different. In this social media age, and especially with Pinterest and wedding blogs, everyone is seeing and doing the same things. They’re all very pretty, but as a designer and creative, I strive to do what no one else is doing. I came across these holographic envelopes and after initially writing them off as “too flashy,” I came back around to them about a month later, still obsessed, determined to use them in our wedding stationery.

With the whole night sky concept I had for the actual stationery pieces, holographic foil printing was the obvious choice. It’s unexpected and amazing, and I couldn’t be happier with the final result! It fit perfectly into the starry night bohemian vibe I envisioned for the whole event. It embodies us as a couple. What I’ve learned so far through this process is that you should never back down from something that speaks to you because of what other people may think. If you make decisions based on things you love, it will all come together beautifully FOR YOU, which is what matters most.

The enamel pins are another unusual addition to a wedding suite, and I wanted to do something special for our save the date that was memorable and sort of interactive, but also useful and not have our names plastered all over it. This way, our guests can keep and use this pin for themselves and while it’ll remind them of us and our celebration, it’s also totally unbranded! I wanted to give them something that they could keep and use well beyond our wedding. Many friends tell me they still have our save the date on their fridge, which warms a designer’s heart.

I’m so happy with how our wedding came together, everything following in the wake of these crazy invitations. Once I followed my instincts and these actually came into existence, it helped me to visualize the rest of the wedding. We finished it off with organic, wild florals, midnight blue tuxes, blush details, and an embellished deco-inspired gown. We also had hand-dyed shibori tea towel favors and donuts for a cake! We tried to just choose things that spoke to us as a couple and be genuine in everything we did. It worked out fabulously, and it was the best day of our lives.

Hey everyone! Somehow it’s August and summer is zooming by at full speed (with hints of fall even in the air.) Before our focus goes full-on about the new school year and fall plans, let’s dive into a fresh dose of calligraphy to keep our summer senses floating on high. Once I stumbled on the work of calligrapher Kelsey Carpenter, I was blown away by her work’s natural lightness and organic style. Let’s take a peek into the world of Kelsey Malie Calligraphy. Jen

Kelsey stumbled into calligraphy when she was getting married. “I didn’t like any paper goods out there and couldn’t afford something custom so I picked up a dip pen and learned.” Then she literally hand wrote each wedding invitation (as a beginner!). After that experience, she was hooked on calligraphy.

Kelsey hails from the beautiful state of Hawaii, and that’s where she and her husband got married, too. They now are city dwellers in Chicago.

Kelsey shares: “The most wonderful part of invitation design is working in the personality of each client into their wedding paper goods. I just had a client who had a sketch of each member of her wedding party done for her program and another that, in lieu of favors, hand-wrote a message on custom stationary to each guest to be placed at their seat during dinner.”

I’m such a sentimental sap when it comes to special details like that, and little ways to connect with people in your wedding. Since that connection with friends and family is certainly part of the joy of a wedding!

Kelsey likes to changes things up in her work and play with different lettering styles. “I love learning new scripts and am constantly challenging myself to work on older script styles like Spencerian and Copperplate.” But if you try to nail her down to describing her calligraphy style in a couple words, she’ll share it’s “romantic and messy”. Kind of feels like the perfect mix, right? Far from fussy, her romantic messy style of lettering work feels effortless and organic.

“I love when I can just play with wild, illegible script and ink splatters,” shares Kelsey. But she definitely keeps everything more readable when it comes to invitation suites for real brides.

Lucas’s Pokemon Birthday Party Invitations

It’s so fun to see how talented designers interpret their kids birthday party theme requests, especially as they get older! I’ve had the pleasure of featuring every single birthday party invitation that Lisa from Good on Paper has designed for her sons Lucas and Theo, and I’ve loved watching the themes evolve from numbers to superheros to animals to magic. For Lucas’s 7th birthday party (!!!), Lisa put her spin on a Pokemon-themed party! For the Pokemon birthday party invitations, Lisa created her own modern take on a Pikachu design complete with a sunny yellow balloon and envelope liners with a photo of the birthday kid. So fun!

From Lisa: Lucas asked for a Pokemon themed party for his 7th birthday. As usual, I like to put my own modern spin on the theme. I designed the invitations with a simple and modern take on Pikachu’s face. I initially wanted to mail each invitation with a balloon that had a hand drawing of Pikachu’s face but it didn’t quite work out the way I wanted.

Instead, each invitation came with a yellow balloon taped to the yellow backing of the invitation with some black striped washi tape. The custom envelope liner had a photo of Lucas looking at a Pokemon book written in Japanese from our date to the Kinokuniya bookstore in San Francisco’s Japantown. The invitations were mailed in sunny yellow envelopes and sealed with wraparound address labels.

Every birthday party we throw includes donut holes and custom paper cones – definitely a big hit with the party guests!

For the party favors, I made Poke Surprise Balls using white crepe paper streamers, a black Sharpie and red acrylic paint. Each Poke Ball included a few Pokemon figurines, Japanese candy, and a colorful whistle.

For the birthday cake, I made a super easy red velvet cake and cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. I had seen many Pinterest photos of cupcakes resembling poke balls but I didn’t have the time or energy to go that route. Instead, I just put seven Pokemon figurines on Lucas’s cake and one each on top of the cupcakes. The kids were so excited to get more figurines and negotiated trades.

We also hired a face painter who specialized in Pokemon drawings. Some kids had their full face painted and others, like Lucas, just had a character drawn on their face or arm.

Every year, my husband Nick and I tag team on making the piñata. This year I made a giant Poke Ball using the paper maché method and filled it with Japanese candies and fruit gummies.

Thanks so much Lisa! And happy 7th birthday Lucas!
