Thanksgiving is tomorrow, which means the season of giving is just around the corner! I grew up in Florida, so I always associate the months of December through February with amazing in-season winter citrus. My favorite little citrus fruit, Cuties, is finally back in our local grocery store – yay! Even though the days are shorter and the nights are longer, Cuties is sending us a dose of love and sunshine straight from their California groves right when we need it most. I’m so excited to celebrate both the season of giving and the return of Cuties season with these gorgeous DIY watercolor and gold leaf gift tags!

Celebrate the Season of Giving with Cuties Mandarin Oranges

Now that I live in DC and spend most of my holidays with my husband’s family in upstate New York, I’ve learned to embrace the dark coziness of the winter months in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. We wrap ourselves in warm blankets, make tea and hot cocoa in the evening, light lots of candles with the seasonal scents of evergreen, vanilla, and citrus – and of course we snack on delicious, in-season winter citrus. My kids always reach straight for the bowl of Cuties on the kitchen counter: they’re sweet, seedless, easy for little hands to peel apart, and perfectly kid-sized. They’re also the perfect on-the-go snack, and we always bring a handful of Cuties when we’re out exploring on the weekends.

Celebrate the Season of Giving with Cuties Mandarin Oranges

One of the things I love most about being a mom of two little girls is seeing the way they offer love and affection so freely and easily. They’re full of hugs for all their little friends when I drop them off at school in the morning – and then again when I pick them up in the afternoon! Whenever her older sister is having a bad day or falls and scrapes a knee, my youngest daughter, Alice, will bring over her favorite toy or doll to make her older sister feel better. It’s the absolute sweetest thing to see.

I wrapped a bunch of Cuties in these watercolor and gold leaf gift tags for my daughters to give to their teachers and school friends as our family’s Cuties Correspondents. I’ve been talking with my girls a lot lately about the concepts of kindness and compassion as we head into the holiday season, and these little treats are the perfect way to bring a smile to their friends’ faces as we head off for the holiday weekend. Even as adults, I’m sure we could all use a surprise treat with a sweet message to brighten our day. Cuties are the perfect snack to share with friends and loved ones, from preschool friends to coworkers, and these sweet gift tags make them even more special. Let’s make some!

To make the DIY watercolor and gold leaf gift tags:

Step 1. Use a gift tag maker to punch gift tags out of 100% cotton watercolor paper and create a small eyelet hole for the ribbon. If you don’t have a gift tag maker, you can use scissors and a standard hole punch. 100% cotton watercolor paper will best absorb the watercolor pigment without warping, so try to avoid lower quality paper or card stock for this project.

Step 2. Use a Size 6 round paint brush to paint a thin line of orange watercolor on one edge of the gift tag. I used this 30-color watercolor set, but these watercolor brush pens would be fun, too!

Step 3. Add a thin strip of gold leaf above the orange watercolor, leaving enough room to write a name above the gold leaf. Each gold leaf kit is different, so follow the instructions on your package for best results.

Step 4. Wrap a Cutie in your favorite ribbon (or place a few Cuties into a little bag!), then attach a gift tag and write the name of the recipient. Too cute!

I mixed things up with some gift tags that only have gold leaf, some that only have the dash of watercolor, and some that have both – so fun! For older kids, I love the idea of writing a sweet little note on the other side, but since my kids are still very young we kept our gift tags simple. Now that they’re just learning how to write their names and read, the kids in my daughters’ preschool and kindergarten classes just LOVE getting little gifts or notes with their names on them!

These gift tags are such a fun and easy way to add a dose of color and sparkle to little gifts – and if you have older children, they can even join in on the painting and gilding process!

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! Last weekend, I hosted Jenna of Mon Voir at Common Room Studio to celebrate her new book, Everyday Watercolor. We had 60 people at the studio over Saturday and Sunday, and it felt so great to finally share the space with people! If you’re in the DC area, we have two really exciting workshops coming up over the next few weeks: an ornament painting workshop with Talia of The White Hearth on Small Business Saturday, and a holiday table styling workshop with Wld Wst on December 16 that we’re calling Architecture of a Table. I’m so excited for both workshops – they’re going to be so fun! But in the meantime…

Printable Floral Thanksgiving Dinner Stationery

Hopefully, by this time next week we’ll all be spending time with family and friends, stuffed to the brim with turkey, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie – and any other favorite Thanksgiving dishes. I love Thanksgiving for so many reasons: family and food, of course, but also the chance to rest, reflect, and feel thankful as we head into the season of giving. I wanted to do something a bit special this Thanksgiving, after a long and tumultuous year, so today I’m teaming up with illustrator and pattern designer Juliet Meeks to offer printable floral Thanksgiving dinner stationery to dress up your Thanksgiving table!

I told Juliet I wanted something colorful and whimsical – and I love what she came up with! I love the touches of pink and red in the color palette, and the floral details are perfect for a late fall holiday table. We’ve got place cards, a 6.5″ x 9.5″ floral frame that can be used for menus and signs, and the cutest hand lettered gratitude cards. You can download the full printable set below, then print onto white card stock, and cut along the crop marks. You can even have everything printed at your local copy & print store to save time – just make sure it’s on 110 lb matte white card stock and you’ll be good to go!

The place cards can be folded and tented to rest directly on the table, or cut off the top half and use them as a flat card on a plate or with a place card holder. The place cards also double as little menu cards where you can write the name of a particular dish – or even use them to label the different kinds of pie! I wrote out the name of our favorite holiday punch, because that’s how we roll at Thanksgiving.

If you’re planning a more formal Thanksgiving dinner, you can use the large floral frame to write your menu and place it at each individual place setting. Or use it to make a welcome sign for guests telling them to grab a drink and make themselves comfortable. So many options!

And I’m absolutely loving these darling “I’m Thankful For…” cards that Juliet designed! Does your family go around the table to list the things that you’re grateful for before dinner? Writing them down is so much better!

Romantic Wildflower Inspired Wedding Invitations

We love it when wedding invitation designers draw heavily upon the wedding venue for design inspiration! Michelle of Honey Paper (a member of our Designer Rolodex, naturally) designed these romantic wildflower inspired wedding invitations with the lush wildflower varieties of California’s Santa Ynez Valley in mind. From crisp honeysuckle to bristly blue fiesta flowers and pale leopard lilies, the delicate foliage in this suite is spot on – and so pretty paired with equally delicate text in pale green script!

From Michelle: Nicholas proposed to Katherine under the open skies of California’s Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara County as the heads of lupines and poppies unfurled like antique quilts shaken out and smoothed. As native Coloradans, the couple felt a connection to this peaceful land between the mountains and wanted to share the gentle, pastoral countryside and local culture with their loved ones on their wedding day.

The venue, florals, stationery details, and seasonal menu all drew inspiration from the generous, natural beauty of the region and the couple’s shared interest in sustainable food and love of the outdoors. I created original watercolor illustrations for the stationery and dinner menu inspired by the wildflowers of the region. An oval wreath of native ferns, chaparral nightshade, lilies and blue fiesta flower with its bristly foliage encircled the text of the invitation. An elegant script in green, the color of weathered copper, suggests the wandering stems of California honeysuckle.

The deckled edges of the invitation and response card highlight the artistry of the mould-made paper by Fabriano, a distinguished Italian paper company wholly dedicated to renewable energy and sustainable business practices.

Bright white envelopes with old-world flaps were lined with my original watercolor illustration of the pale leopard lily, an abundant native plant often found alongside hedge nettles and stream orchid. Long, billowy stems with silky petals gracefully reach toward the first hints of the morning sun. Fess Parker Wine Country Inn and The Bear and Star were a perfect venue pair. Nestled among meadow, hill and stream, The Bear and Star restaurant boasts a closed-circuit ecosystem, meaning its menu is entirely crafted from the harvest yielded by Fess Parker Home Ranch. While quail, pig and cattle roam pasture, heirloom vegetables and fruit cling to vine and branch like baubles and gemstone.

As favors, guests took home some of the garden spoils in packets filled with heirloom seeds from the year’s previous yield which read, “Let Love Grow,” with a running border of leopard lilies. The Bear and Star’s Chef John Cox prepared a family style dinner which started with a farm fresh hors d’oeuvres bar and the local Pinot Noir, Riesling and Syrah. Guests gathered at long tables on the veranda under a gentle sky and helped themselves to scoops of heirloom beans, quail egg and spring radish.

Envelopes were addressed using a romantic script the unmistakable green of spring’s first sweet pea shoots and paired with monochromatic vintage stamps. What an absolute delight to be part of this beautiful wedding day that was both a celebration of love and an homage to the riches of the earth.
