Gold Foil Architecture-Inspired Wedding Invitations

Normally we hear the designer’s perspective on a particular wedding invitation, but today we’re lucky to hear from both the designer and the printer of these beautiful gold foil architecture-inspired wedding invitations and save the dates. Such a treat! Designer Ryan DePaola drew inspiration from his adopted home town, Los Angeles, for both the invitation and save the date design, then the talented production team at Mama’s Sauce brought the design to life through a combination of screen printing, letterpress printing, and gold foil!

First, a few notes on the design inspiration from designer Ryan DePaola: Our wedding suite was inspired by our venue, its location and what the two together represented to us. We choose to incorporate both ourselves as well as the city itself in our invitation to further integrate the two as one. The foil line work and flourishes are really an homage to the city of LA itself and the impact it has had – not just in style and architecture, but to us.

LA is where my fiancé and I first met and dated, so for the save the dates I wanted to pull in all the beautiful architecture of all the buildings in downtown LA that had had special meaning to us. Where we had our first date all the way to our pizza spot. Where we had built our relationship and where we are solidifying it.

From Mama’s Sauce on printing and production: Ryan’s suite was ultimately letterpress and foil in the end, but for his Save the Date we also incorporated screen printing. That was the only piece in his suite that utilized a different paper. We chose to to go with the smoother, less fibrous, Neenah Classic Crest Solar White for the Save the Date to ensure the half tone screen printed portion of the design (the marbling) printed as consistently as possible. Little technical decisions like this can go a long way when you’re really thinking through the best way to bring art to life within a process, as each design marries (pun!) with the process and paper differently.

The remainder of the suite was foil stamped and letterpress printed on double thick cotton paper that resulted in a strikingly consistent impression from both processes. They were pre-duplexed to double thick, as there wasn’t any relief printing on the backside.

Suites like this are a dream to work on for us. The designer is the client, and in this case the designer-client knows how to design well for our processes, yet is able to lean into our expertise for suggestions in order to make the package really shine, like foil is supposed to do.

Tropical Garden Party Copper Foil Wedding Invitations

Tropical foliage + copper foil? A match made in heaven! I’m pretty sure my jaw hit the floor when I saw these gorgeous tropical garden party copper foil wedding invitations from Haley at Australian creative studio The Distillery. Haley created these invitations for a wedding at the Merribee Estate a couple of hours south of Sydney, Australia. I love the dark green envelope liner against the colorful digitally printed tropical florals and copper foil details!

From Haley: As Mel and Nathan were planning their wedding, they knew they wanted a romantic, whimsical and slightly quirky adventure out of the city they call home. Inspired by the sense of freedom, they ventured south of Sydney, where they fell in love with the enchanting gardens of Merribee Estate. Immediately they knew that the surrounding ornamental topiary and tropical gardens, would shape their entire stationery suite and set the tone for a slightly unconventional wedding.

With a passion for craft and tactility, Mel and Nathan wanted to to explore speciality embellishments to inspire their guests with a sense of freedom, fun and adventure that also draws on the weddings slightly Alice in Wonderland theme. The invitation features flowering trees, and pretty topiary in a variety of whimsical shapes and colours combined with the subtle glimmer of foil sprinkled within the digital florals to silently accentuate the couples names.

Mel and Nathan’s names have been hand lettered with a copper foil embellishment to mimic the rustic elegance of Merribee’s historical barn. The ever so slightly quirky and playful nature of the evening was also brought into the details of the typography that has been letterpress printed into a creamy cotton stock and mounted to a deep forest green.

These qualities have been further explored in the additional stationery pieces, including a hand illustrated map that combines both letterpress printing processes with new age digital printing. The map unfolds to reveal a playful Alice in Wonderland inspired journey filled with tea cups and playing cards to highlight key details for their guest’s adventure to Merribee gardens.

Happy Friday everyone – and Happy Mother’s Day weekend! My kids aren’t really old enough to understand Mother’s Day yet, so we’ll be celebrating with a fairly normal weekend involving a birthday party and brunch, which is kind of a perfect weekend anyway! But in the meantime…

I want to live in these illustrated lakeside wedding invitation’s from Lana’s Shop! From Lana: The inspiration for Michelle and David’s invitations was obvious when they showed me their stunning wedding location. Michelle’s family lake home offered stunning views, but it was also a very meaningful location for the bride and groom. This gorgeous setting became the focal point for the suite, which features light, airy watercolor illustrations of the venue as well as beautiful calligraphy accents by the talented Victoria Rothwell with Design House of Moira.

For the oversized invitations, I illustrated the exact lake scene that guests would see during the ceremony, while the RSVP cards include an illustration of the home on the property where the reception would take place. The main palette of blues and greens reflects the serene location. When it came to printing, we chose a quality felt paper so that each guest felt like they had the original painting.

Rustic Farm to Table Watercolor Save the Dates

Okay, the tiny illustrations of beets and carrots in these rustic farm to table watercolor save the dates are pretty much the cutest things I’ve ever seen. Created by Amanda at Wide Eyes Paper Co. for the wedding of two chefs, the save the dates feature plenty of Amanda’s signature watercolor illustrations, along with an engraved wood tag for some extra personality.

From Amanda: These save the dates were created specifically for two chefs that found love in the kitchen. Kelly and Jeremy are having a romantic and intimate farm to table rustic soirée at Buttermilk Farms in Milton, New York. The design was such a fun project to work on.  Our shop is used to creating custom watercolor portraits of couples venue or locations, but Kelly and Jeremy wanted a more natural, organic feel to their announcements with a little more attention to subtle details seen within the cards we designed.

We carefully crafted a 4×6″ postcard style save the date with watercolor greenery in representation of herbs in a garden, as well as some watercolor beets and carrots as an accent to their farm to table theme.  I love the little details seen throughout these special cards.

Additionally, the save the dates were printed on 100 percent recyclable natural kraft card and paired with a banner style engraved wood tag to complete the set.
