Happy Long Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! I don’t know about you, but I’m really looking forward to a three day weekend! We had been planning to go out of town for a few days, but decided to scrap our plans and enjoy a quiet weekend at home instead. As nice as it would have been to get out of DC, it’s actually kind of a relief to just stay home. I’m such a homebody. Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving (on Monday) to our Canadian friends! I hope we all have a nice and relaxing long weekend. But in the meantime…

Quick Pick: Parabo Press

Have you all heard about Parabo Press? It’s a brand new app and photo printing service inspired by small batch printing processes – and it just launched yesterday! Like most parents these days, most of my photos of my kids live on my phone, so I’m always on the hunt for new ways to print those photos and display them at home – or even give them to family as gifts!

Parabo Press is from the team behind Photojojo, which joined forces with photo printing service Zoomin in 2014. Parabo Press printing processes are optimized for the photos on our phones – no DSLR required! Although of course they will work with DSLR photos, too, but it’s awesome to be able to format and print right from your phone. Parabo offers art book-quality photobooks, small prints in geometric shapes, square photo prints, and accordion photobooks.

I’m most excited about the Parabo Press larger art prints, including huge 3′ x 4′ black and white engineering prints, risograph prints, and full color newsprints. At price points of $20-$30 the art prints are ridiculously affordable! The risograph prints might be my favorite of the bunch. Risograph prints are printed on Xerox-esque machines that originated in Japan in the 1980s and have a screenprint-like effect. The risograph prints are available in neon pink, neon orange, teal, and blue. It would be amazing to print a favorite photo of my girls in one of those bright colors! And my mind is absolutely spinning thinking of all the party and wedding possibilities, from cocktail menus to seating charts!

In addition to prints and photobooks, Parabo Press offers fresh and modern display accessories and hardware for hanging the prints on the wall – no framing required! I’m loving the custom wood rails, mylar tape, and pon pins that allow you to pin photos on a wall or cork board without putting a hole in the photo! Genius!

Hard Blood Orange and Scotch Smash

We’ve been working with Mike’s Hard Lemonade over the past few weeks to celebrate outdoor entertaining, from backyard BBQs to watermelon and flamingo picnic parties. But now that October has arrived it’s time to celebrate the start of fall! Which means it’s time for fall cocktails! This time of year the weather can’t make up its mind – we just experienced our first cold snaps of the season followed by several warmer days. So while we might not yet be ready for hot drinks like toddies and hot buttered rum, we knew we wanted to create something that would incorporate seasonal fall flavors.

The Smash is our go-to cocktail for the summer-to-fall transition: it’s refreshing and incorporates plenty of fresh seasonal fruit. Mike’s Hard Lemonade just released a brand new limited edition flavor for fall – Hard Blood Orange – which it turns out pairs amazingly well with a smooth blended Scotch. We decided to mix up a Mike’s Hard Blood Orange and Scotch Smash with a bit of cherry liqueur and some fresh oranges that just recently arrived in our local grocery store. The result is just what we’re looking for as the weather turns from summer to fall: just a bit of sweet, just a bit of tart, light and effervescent, but with an incredibly smooth warmth thanks to the blended Scotch.

An assertive single malt Scotch whisky can be tough to mix into drinks, but a mellow blended Scotch can add a bit of oak and smokiness without overwhelming a drink. Plus, Scotch goes amazing with orange, both the fresh sweet orange we smashed up and the drier citrus notes of the Mike’s Hard Blood Orange. The Mike’s Hard Blood Orange will only be available for a limited time – you’ll have to find some before it’s gone!

Our Hard Blood Orange and Scotch Smash can be enjoyed in any weather or social conditions – from a casual gathering in the backyard to watching a game on TV with friends to an indoor dinner party (especially if the Smash is served in beautiful vintage glasses). I want to make a bunch of these Smashes to serve while roasting s’mores over our backyard fire pit. Now that’s the way to take advantage of cooler weather and celebrate the start of fall!

Hard Blood Orange and Scotch Smash

2 oz Blended Scotch
1/2 oz Cherry Liqueur
1/2 a Sweet Orange, Quartered

Combine the Scotch, the cherry liqueur, and the quartered orange in a cocktail shaker. Add a few pieces of ice, the bigger the better, and shake hard to smash up the orange pieces. Strain into a highball glass filled with fresh crushed ice and top with a generous pour of Mike’s Hard Blood Orange. Garnish with an orange wheel and enjoy!
