Gah! Did April fly by in about half a second for anyone else? So crazy! But I’m super happy to welcome May – it’s National Stationery Show month!! And of course we have a couple of gorgeous illustrated wallpapers from Katie of The Good Twin to welcome the new month, including a mini pep talk for any stationers preparing to exhibit at the show (like Katie!). I’m also doing something a wee bit different and adding in one of my own wallpapers this month: an iridescent image that I’ve been enjoying on my own devices and thought I’d share! Enjoy!

A Parisian Margarita

We were all set to spend our last Friday of the month with something a little different. Maybe a Ramos Tequila Fizz? Maybe a Mezcal Old Fashioned? But then something very sad happened: Rob Cooper, the creator of St-Germain, died on Monday. He was 39. So, we decided to close this month instead with a simple, classic Tequila recipe showcasing Rob’s most perfect liqueur. – Andrew

St-Germain Margarita Cocktail Recipe / Oh So Beautiful Paper

A St-Germain Margarita

2 oz Tequila
1 oz Lime Juice

3/4 oz St-Germain
1/4 oz Agave Nectar

Add all the ingredients to a shaker filled two-thirds with ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled coupe glass or a lowball glass filled with crushed ice. Enjoy!

This is a rich, fruity spin on a classic Margarita, full of big floral notes from the St-Germain’s elderflowers and silky from the liqueurs thick texture. St-Germain really is a wonderful ingredient to work with, and it genuinely pairs well with just about everything. We had a chance to work with St-Germain as a sponsor for a couple of years, and it was a real pleasure to see how it worked in all sorts of different recipes.

Rob developed St-Germain back in 2007, right when the craft cocktail movement was just taking off. It’s become so ubiquitous that people call it “bartender’s ketchup,” a really inelegant way of saying that it ends in a lot of drinks because it works so well, sometimes fruity, sometimes floral, always delicious. It’s so familiar that it’s hard to imagine that its Art Deco bottle is less than a decade old, and that St-Germain hasn’t been around since the 1920s.

Rob sold St-Germain to Bacardi, but his company Cooper Spirits Co. also helped revive some classic spirits, Creme Yvette and Rock-n-Rye (check them out, seriously!). If all he had done was craft St-Germain, though, he’d still be remembered for changing the face of modern cocktails.

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! It has been a rainy and gloomy week here in DC, which is kind of the perfect weather for getting things done indoors. I’ve been busy making decorations for this year’s Paper Party at the National Stationery Show, which is coming up in just a couple of weeks!! But in the meantime…

Galaxy-Inspired Graduation Announcements

Well, these are fun! Ashley of Ash Bush Lettering and Design sent over these galaxy-inspired graduation announcements, which feels like kind of the most perfect theme for a graduation. I mean, if the world is your oyster, why not the entire galaxy?? Ashley combined galaxy elements with her playful hand lettering, and of course galaxy envelope liners!

From Ashley: I’m in love with these galaxy graduation announcements I had the chance to create! They’re fun, modern, and unique. I started out making custom liners, each one was different! From there we decided on a smokey gray, metallic square envelope. The envelopes really drove the rest of the design – I wanted the announcements to balance and complement the envelopes, so I kept it light with just a splash of galaxy in the custom hand-lettering.

I also made a custom ink mixture of white with splashes of shimmer powder to add just a hint of shine to the envelope lettering. The overall feel of the suite’s lettering was brushy and messy with ink splatters everywhere to resemble stars. And of course we topped it off with the most fun vintage stamps we could find!

Illustrated Storybook Wedding Invitations

I love the mix of classic elegance and youthful whimsy in these illustrated storybook wedding invitations and save the dates from Jen at Shipwright & Co. Inspired by the illustrations of Ludwig Bemelmans (creator of the Madeline books) and with a color palette inspired by natural plant dyes, the invitation suite features illustrations of animals dancing at dusk and nighttime, surrounded by beautiful woodland flora. Just gorgeous!

From Jen: Ashley and Mike met in New York and had many dates at Bemelmans Bar, which is named in honor of Ludwig Bemelmans – creator of the Madeline children’s books. The walls are covered with his illustrations, featuring many animals frolicking in the woods. Ashley and Mike wanted to capture that magic and whimsy of those illustrations in their invitations, and we were super excited to oblige as we are big fans of classic children’s book illustrations.

The save the dates capture the animals dancing at dusk on the barn where Ashley and Mike tied the knot, and the invitations move into a nighttime world, layered in three colors with the handwritten text filling up the full moon. These pieces are all about the details. Each animal and plant was chosen especially for each spot. We also love their color scheme, which was inspired by natural plant dyes.
