{happy weekend!}

This was a big week, no? It feels so nice to turn on the news for reports about something good for a change. I also spent a good part of my week going through years and years of saved articles in my Google Reader (I have some as far back as 2008!) and bookmarking them elsewhere or pinning them on my Pinterest page. I migrated to Feedly a couple of months ago (I like the clean layout and easy functionality), but I’ll still miss Reader when it goes offline at the end of this month. Sigh. But in the meantime…

Wedding Stationery Inspiration: Navy

I think navy is perhaps the most perfect summer neutral. I really start to fall in love with it each season as the Fourth of July approaches (can you believe it’s next week!?) and the red, white and blue starts to make its appearance. Navy can be adapted for so many summer wedding styles: preppy, classic, nautical and Americana. It lends itself well to stationery, as it looks great in stripes or as the backdrop for fine white calligraphy. Here’s a few navy ideas that span its versatility, with a subtle nod to the Fourth, too. —Kelly

Housewarming Party Cocktail Recipes

As promised, we’re sharing the full recipes from the first installment of our summer cocktail party series! The District of Columbia is a transient town, and even folks like us who have been here for a decade (!) move around inside the city quite a bit. We drew on our own springtime move to a new house as inspiration for this housewarming party featuring some light and airy St-Germain cocktails, perfect for this time of year, each owing a little bit to this beautiful city we call home. We hope you enjoy!

Signature St-Germain Cocktail Recipes by Oh So Beautiful Paper (46)

The Scidmore

2 1/2 oz Sake
1/2 oz
St-Germain
1/2 oz Cherry Blossom Syrup
1 Dash Rosewater

Combine all the ingredients, stir well with ice, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

The Scidmore – named in honor of Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore, the very impressive lady who first brought our iconic cherry blossom trees from Japan to DC in 1912 – combines Japan’s dry rice wine with the sweet floral notes of St-Germain and some pretty unique Japanese cherry blossom syrup, and just a bit of rosewater (not too much or it will completely overwhelm the drink!). All those sweet, flowery ingredients could make this a cloying drink, but the complex dryness of the Sake helps make this a crisp, clear, bright drink – and plenty light, since Sake doesn’t have a very high proof. If making ahead in a big batch for a party, measure out your ingredients in the proper proportions, combine everything ahead of time, then stir with lots of ice and strain into a chilled pitcher just before serving.

The District Sour

2 oz Dry Gin
1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
1/2 oz
St-Germain
1/2 oz Cherry Liqueur
1/2 oz Rich Simple Syrup

Combine all the ingredients and shake well with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass – or a highball glass filled with ice – then top with sparkling water and garnish with a maraschino cherry.

The District Sour is tart and sweet, complexly floral and botanical from that fantastic combination of Gin and St-Germain, with a refreshingly sparkling finish, perfect for spring and summer. Just make sure to use cherry liqueur, which should be sweet and fruity, and not Cherry Heering, which will be a bit too dry and spicy. If making for a party, increase your proportions and combine everything ahead of time. Just before you’re ready to serve (any later and you’ll lose your fizz), shake everything with lots of ice, strain into a chilled pitcher, and top with of sparkling water.

Rosemary-Strawberry Fizz

2 oz Rosemary-Infused Dry Gin or Genever
1 oz Lemon Juice
1/2 oz Rich Simple Syrup
2-3 Strawberries
Tonic or Seltzer Water

A few days before serving, submerge a few rosemary sprigs in a glass jar filled with Gin or Genever (we used the maltier, smoother Genever) and let sit for a few days. Strain out the rosemary, then combine the Genever, juice, syrup and strawberries in a cocktail shaker. Muddle the strawberries well, then shake everything with ice. Strain into a highball glass (you may want to double-strain with a sieve or cheesecloth to get out all that pulp), top with seltzer water – or better yet, tonic water to add a touch of bitterness to complement the rosemary – just before serving and drink without hesitation. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary.

Another light, crisp sour perfect for spring and summer, this Fizz will convince you that an herb like rosemary has plenty of business in a cocktail. It’s complexly botanical, light and sweet, richly fruity from the fresh strawberries, balanced by the refreshing bitterness of the tonic. If making for a party, scale up all you your ingredients and combine ahead of time. Then muddle, shake, strain into a chilled pitcher, and top with the tonic or seltzer water just before serving.

A Housewarming Cocktail Party with St-Germain

Today I’m super excited to kick off a new series on Oh So Beautiful Paper all about summer cocktail parties! Long summer days offer the perfect opportunity to invite a few friends over for a cool beverage, so we’ve teamed up with St-Germain to bring you a different party idea every month. I invited some of my favorite stationers and calligraphers to participate in the series, with inspiration for everything from invitations and paper details to floral ideas – and of course lots of cocktail recipes with our favorite liqueur. For the first installment, I drew inspiration from my own life: a cocktail housewarming party!

I’ve been obsessed with these dip-dye cards from Fig. 2 Design Studio for well over a year now. Claudia and I used those cards as the inspiration for the party invitations, which feature a beautiful ombre effect in shades of light pink and lavender and bright pink text. We couldn’t resist including a small packet of confetti in fun colors for an added element of celebration.

We thought a cocktail and dessert party sounded like a fun idea, particularly for a housewarming party where people might be coming and going over the course of an afternoon and evening. We chose doughnuts and chocolate croissants (I can’t pass up a good doughnut these days), but you could easily include cupcakes, macarons, or any dessert of your choice.

Whenever possible, we recommend mixing a large batch of your cocktail recipe ahead of time and placing it in a pitcher for easy serving – otherwise you’ll be stuck at the bar all evening! For this recipe, which we’ll be sharing in full in just a bit, you can mix up the rosemary-infused strawberry gin a day or two in advance, then place seltzer or tonic water nearby for mixing into each individual drink just before serving.

We used a flower petal as a garnish for this cocktail, but you could also garnish with a maraschino cherry or berries.

For the flowers, I placed a single peony in antique decanters that previously belonged to my grandmother and great-grandmother. You can find similar styles at flea markets or on Etsy and ebay.

Jess + Charlie’s Retro Neon Wedding Invitations

The ladies of Gus & Ruby Letterpress always send me most awesome wedding invitations, but these invitations are seriously cool! Created for a creative California couple, the entire suite has a fun retro vibe combined with modern pops of neon color. The save the dates feature neon borders in three different colors against blind impression text, while the invitation suite and outer envelopes include pops of bright neon pink. Love!

From Samantha and Whitney: This custom suite was designed for a hip, fun-loving couple getting married at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum in Santa Barbara, CA. The couple wanted their stationery to reflect the laid-back California vibe of their wedding while still being fun and hip and inviting for their guests who were traveling from all over the country.

Jess and Charlie’s modern, interactive save the date featured a blind-printed message with a pop of neon and set the stage for a fun party ahead. The subtle, cheeky blind printed message ended with a URL in a pop of neon that invited guests to view a video online detailing their engagement and upcoming nuptials.

The invitations and reply cards featured a mix of bold sans serif and serif fonts as well as a retro-inspired script. The pairing of fonts provided a good mix of contemporary and vintage typestyles while the use of white space and small pop of neon helped round out a clean, fresh look.

Each invitation was printed on double-thick 220# cotton and then edge painted in neon pink for extra punch of color. All the pieces were lovingly letterpress printed by hand on our antique press (c. 1913) on beautiful, textural, super thick 100% cotton paper.
