Modern Gemstone Copper Foil Wedding Invitations

Happy Tuesday everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful three day weekend! Also, just in case you missed it on Friday, all of the vintage glassware over in Liquorary’s shop is 20% off through midnight tonight with the code LABOR20 – it’s a great time to stock up on some gorgeous vintage glasses! Anyway, we’re starting this new week with some beautiful and modern gemstone copper foil wedding invitations from And Here We Are. Navy blue and copper foil is one of my all-time favorite color combinations, and when you add in deep plums, slate gray, and other neutral tones you have a seriously gorgeous and sophisticated color palette!

From Meghan: We had so much fun working with Negin and Dan on their gorgeous Los Angeles wedding. Our theme was “modern chic” and the wedding color palette included deep plums, slate gray, navy/dark blue, and soft neutrals with copper accents. For their wedding invitations, we spun off of our watercolor gem wedding invitation suite with a different lettering style, updated color scheme and copper foil stamping.

When an interior designer and an architect get together, you know you’re in for a beautiful and well-planned event; but we hit the jackpot with this couple’s killer sense of humor. We got to insert all kinds of fun little drawings into their wedding paper like a tiny illustration of Lionel Richie, a pile of doughnuts, and the priest from The Princess Bride.

We then extended the styles through the day-of paper, including table numbers, dinner menus, a seating chart for the wedding reception, place cards, and wedding reception signage.

White Wine Sangria

After a punishing August, I’m ready for September. September in DC is when we leave behind the swampy humidity and sweltering heat of summer and, very briefly, move into the most perfect weather DC ever gets. Warm but not hot, dry, breezy, cool at night. Perfect for Sangria, a summer-to-fall drink that I can never get enough of. When Nole proposed we spend a month on Sangria, I was sold pretty quickly. We’ve made some pretty traditional Sangrias before, like this stone fruit and red wine Sangria. So, this time, we went a little outside my normal comfort zone to try out a white wine Sangria recipe, one flavored with some  south-of-the-border ingredients that give this one a nice kick. –Andrew

White Wine Sangria Recipe

  • 1 750 ml bottle Spanish White Wine
  • 8 oz Silver Tequila
  • 4 oz Lime Juice
  • 4 oz Ginger Syrup
  • 2 oz Pineapple Syrup
  • Watermelon
  • Nectarines
  • Mango

Combine the wine, Tequila, lime juice, ginger syrup, and pineapple syrup in a pitcher. Add diced watermelon, nectarines, and mango to taste, about a cup each but more if that floats your boat. Let everything sit overnight so the flavors meld together. Serve over ice and garnish with fresh mango and watermelon. Enjoy!

We used a silver Tequila to fortify our Sangria, in place of the traditional brandy, which lends this Sangria an earthy, vegetal quality that you don’t usually find in Sangria. The wine and the Tequila play off each other in interesting ways; Nole said she tasted rosemary, which we definitely didn’t add.

The Sangria is a bit tart, from the lime, with some funky interplay between the ginger and pineapple syrups. Tequila, ginger, and pineapple are a trio that do some wonderful things together; cocktails with the three of them can evoke candied fruit, as in a fruitcake, and are perfect for the winter holidays (not a time of year when most people think of Tequila). It’s a bit drier and tarter than we’re used to in our Sangrias, but it passes muster with Nole, and she has a notorious sweet tooth, so we’re probably in a good place here.

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! Are you ready for the long Labor Day weekend? I know I am! Also, on Monday, I turn 35. I don’t get as excited about my own birthdays anymore these days, since my two girls have birthdays only 7 and 11 days later, respectively, so I’m usually focused on celebrating them. But 35 kind of feels like a big one. I’m looking forward to a quiet celebration with my family and soaking up these last few summer days (although I seriously cannot wait for the cooler weather to arrive!). But in the meantime…

Aaaaahhhh…. September. Such a wonderful month, isn’t it? And the beginning of a whole new season! Back to school and the promise of fall weather are enough to make September one of my favorite months of the year. But it’s also a big birthday month in my family, with my birthday and both of my girls’ birthdays falling in the first half of the month. Here are two beautiful new back-to-school-inspired illustrated wallpapers from The Good Twin to help celebrate the new month!

Mango Spice Shrub

August is almost over, but we wanted to squeeze one more shrub. After our previous very tasty and successful experiment combining tropical fruit with spices, we decided to try again, this time with mango. And this time, instead of Caribbean flavors, we decided to go a little farther abroad. We’re calling it the Mango Spice Shrub. –Andrew

Mango Spice Shrub Cocktail Recipe

  • 2 oz Gin
  • 1 oz Mango Spice Shrub Syrup
  • 1/2 oz St-Germain Elderflower Liqueuer
  • 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • 3/4 oz Coconut Water

To make the shrub syrup: add a tablespoon of cloves, 2-3 star anise pods, and a cinnamon stick, broken up, to a sauce pan over low heat. Gently toast the spices until they are fragrant. Then add a cup of rice wine vinegar and a cup of raw sugar, stirring frequently until the sugar is dissolved. Let the syrup cool, then add the fruit one one peeled, pitted mango. Mash the mango and then let it sit to infuse, covered, for 20 minutes or longer if possible. Strain through cheesecloth, squeezing to remove as much liquid as possible. Bottle and refrigerate.

To make the cocktail: combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled two-thirds with ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail coupe and enjoy!

Piney juniper up front, them lemony tartness, fruity sweetness, and some exotic spices on the finish. I wanted to combine some flavors that evoked various East Asian cuisines–mango, star anise, rice wine vinegar, coconut, and even the St-Germain, which is made from elderflower but can also evoke lychee fruit. Lots of hard-to-place spice and fruit flavors in this one.

We used Malfy Gin in this one, an Italian gin flavored in part with the zest of lemons from Italy’s Amalfi coast. It has lots of delicate lemon scent and flavors when sipped neat, but shows off juniper and other botanicals when mixed. I find that it adds an extra, subtle layer of citrus to this drink.
