Andrea + Taylor’s Pink and Orange Modern Wedding Invitations

This vibrant pink and orange wedding invitation suite comes to us from one of my favorite stationery shops – Lion in the Sun in Brooklyn.  The in-house design team at Lion in the Sun began by creating a save the date inspired by the wedding venue in Hilton Head, South Carolina.  The bright color palette continued for the invitation suite, which also incorporated a classic script font and gold edge painting for added sophistication.

From Melinda and Dave of Lion in the Sun: Andrea and Taylor’s wedding in Hilton Head started out with a fun and festive save the date featuring the Daufuskie Island Lighthouse illustrated in house by our talented design team.  Bright pink and creamsicle inks were used throughout the wedding from start to finish.

When the time came to design the invitations, Andrea and Taylor spent lots of time making sure that the style was was formal but still fun!  We used Bickham Swash for their names and added gold edging to give the invitation some formality.  Then we added fun motifs and graphics to get the guests excited about all of the fun wedding activities.

For the day-of stationery, Andrea ordered brightly colored cocktail napkins with her favorite drink recipe printed on them for a personal touch to the cocktail hour.  We loved working on this gorgeous invitation suite!

Lauren + Arman’s Floral Block Printed Wedding Invitations

I’m a huge fan of the block printed stationery and textiles from Katharine Watson, so I was thrilled to hear that she started offering custom wedding invitations earlier this year!  Katharine sent over this beautiful invitation suite that she created for a recent wedding, all hand printed using hand carved linoleum blocks.

Katharine used two different linoleum blocks to print the floral designs on the invitations, accommodations card, rsvp card, and corresponding thank you cards in a dark magenta ink.  The text was digitally printed in gray ink, then combined with kraft paper envelopes.  You can read more about the block printing process right here.

Carly + John’s Modern Blue + Orange Wedding Invitations

Happy Monday everyone!  We’re starting the week with two absolutely gorgeous wedding invitations.  First up, this modern striped invitation from Melissa and Amy from Atheneum Creative.  In addition to the beautiful invitation suite, Melissa and Amy created day-of stationery, from ceremony programs to magnet escort cards.  I’m loving the neutral blue and gray color palette combined with seriously fun pops of orange!

From Melissa + Amy:  Carly and John asked us to create a very modern invitation for their wedding and gave us a great blue, gray, and orange color palette to work with.  They are a very fun, whimsical couple and basically let us do our thing.

For ceremony programs, we designed a simple card printed digitally on both front and back – which helped keep the budget in line.  We also created small booklet welcome letters that were places inside the welcome packages.

We used magnets in various colors as escort cards – all displayed on a large magnetic chalkboard at the reception venue.

In keeping with the modern wedding invitation style, we designed a set of notecards for the couple to use after the wedding.  Lastly, we created stickers that were used on the invitations as well as the favors.

{happy weekend!}

Happy Friday!  This week was pretty awesome – on Monday I took a little field trip with the talented Michele of Meant to Be Calligraphy to visit Terrain.  Have you been?  It was my first time there and I was just floored by how beautiful everything is – I had to resist the urge to bring home a million new plants for our poor little garden (which sadly isn’t doing so well in the brutal DC summer heat).  And lunch at the cafe?  Sooooo good.  I can’t wait to go back!  But in the meantime…

A few links for your weekend!

This week on Oh So Beautiful Paper:

We have a fun cocktail coming up for you this afternoon, so check back a bit later for the recipe!  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll see you back here on Monday!  xoxo

Matt + Kimmy’s Illustrated Movie Poster Wedding Invitation

Nicole from The Nic Studio is known for her unique illustrations, from greeting cards to art prints to custom projects.  Nicole sent over these 1940s movie poster-style invitations that she designed for a recent wedding, and I couldn’t resist showing you how she went about creating these unique invitations!

From Nicole: The bride, Kimmy, is an old friend from college, and she and Matt both work in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles.  Kimmy is part of “The Apple Sisters” – a faux 1940s female singing group and comedy show that they perform live and distribute via podcasts.  Kimmy and Matt are both drawn towards 1930s and 1940s themed items, especially old movie posters.  We decided to do a 1940s movie poster invitation for their wedding.

I gathered a number of old posters to inform different aspects of the invitation illustration and design. “The Public Enemy” poster for the drama and general illustration composition; the “His Girl Friday” poster for the painterly style; the “Tea for Two” poster for the circular design; and the “Moon Over Miami” poster for the typography.  I then asked Matt and Kimmy, both in the entertainment industry, to take a number of dramatic photos of themselves and derived the poster illustration from those photos.

My background is in illustration and portraiture, so this was a dream for me.  I started by sketching out the couple in blue, then started to lay in some color, first in the background and then onto the subjects themselves.  This is ALWAYS the ugly stage, which I’ve learned to be comfortable showing to others.  I continued to work the piece from there.  All of the painting was actually done digitally on my Wacom Cintiq.   The final illustration sits on the blue background and the talented couple wrote their own copy for the poster, which was hilarious!  The invitation itself measures 11.5″ x 17.5″ and was mailed in a poster tube.
