Fourth of July Cocktail Recipes!

We’ve made countless summer cocktails over the years (you can find all of our cocktail recipes here!), but with the Fourth of July coming up on Monday I thought I’d share a few of my very favorite recipes. It was hard to pick just a few favorites. Summer cocktails are full of wonderful, refreshing things like fresh fruit, mint and basil, and soda water. And then there are Tiki drinks with big tropical flavors! Well, it’s good to have options, right?? Consider this your menu for Fourth of July cocktail recipes and pretty much every weekend for the rest of the summer.

Fourth of July Cocktail Recipes / Oh So Beautiful Paper

1. Summer was made for smashes (aka cocktails with lots of muddled fruit), so there are several making an appearance on this list. The first one – a Blackberry Tequila Smash – tastes like a fun and fruity spin on a margarita.

2. You can’t go wrong with a Classic Mojito during the summer. Mint, rum, lime juice, and soda water = perfection on a hot and sunny day.

3. I’m kind of obsessed with turning cocktails into snow cones – especially for parties! Tiki drinks are perfect for cocktail snow cones, like this Zombie Snow Cone with like twelve different kinds of rum.

4. This Sage-Lime Tequila Smash is a light and refreshing cocktail – and a nice alternative to mint!

5. The Classic Mai Tai is a favorite in our household. Did you know that yesterday was National Mai Tai Day? There’s still time for a belated celebration this weekend!

6. We’ve only done one milkshake cocktail so far – this Boozy Piña Colada Milkshake – but this one was so good, I feel like we need to do a few more, STAT!

7. One of our all time FAVORITE cocktail recipes: the Orange-Vanilla Bean Scotch Smash. It doesn’t have your typical summer flavor profile, but this recipe is so good you’ll want to drink it all year long.

8. For any whiskey fans, here’s a Basil-Mint Peach Bourbon Smash that mixes oaky Bourbon with peaches and refreshing basil and mint leaves!

DIY Watercolor Wall Art

Do you remember these fun and colorful envelopes that we made back in April, using saturated watercolors and Sakura of America‘s gorgeous Soufflé and Glaze pens? I still LOVE how that project turned out, and today I’m so excited to share another project featuring those awesome watercolors! This time we’re using the 30-color Koi Water Color Field Sketch Travel Kit to create watercolor wall art with fun phrases of cut out letters! These pieces are so easy to make (no advanced painting skills required!) and are such a great way to add a dose of color – and an inspiring sentiment – to your walls!

My color inspiration for these watercolor art pieces was to layer a light pastel color over a dark tone, but once I got painting I quickly discovered that two pastel tones in complementary colors look really amazing together. I ended up mixing mostly warm pastel watercolor tones in peach, coral, pink, and lavender with a bit of deep indigo and Prussian blue. The Koi Water Color Field Sketch Travel Kit comes with 30 gorgeous colors that all look amazing together, so you really can’t go wrong when choosing your color story. The kit also comes with a refillable waterbrush for spontaneous painting and a detachable painting palette for mixing colors – and the whole entire kit can easily fit into a small bag or a jacket pocket in case inspiration strikes while you’re out and about!

I also envisioned writing each phrase by hand in tall and skinny block letters, but I realized that might feel out of reach for some of you. Not to worry – there’s a Plan B! I did a bit of testing and figured out that we can use removable letter stickers to create the letter outlines. I provided instructions for both methods in the tutorial below, so feel free to do whatever feels best for you!

Instructions

Step 1. Open your 30-color Koi Water Color Field Sketch Travel Kit, remove the palette, and fill the brush with water. Then paint all of the watercolor paint pans in the kit on a pice of watercolor paper. The colors look very different when painted, so this quick exercise will help you choose your color pairings – or even how to combine two different colors into a custom watercolor!

Step 2. Decide what phrase you want to use for your art print. Lay the 2″ letter stickers on a sheet of watercolor paper, using a ruler to make sure that your lines are fairly even. If you’re planning to write your phrase out by hand, skip this step and go straight to Step 3. If you’d like your final art to fit within a readymade frame, trim your paper down to 8″ x 10″ before painting or applying letter stickers. I didn’t trim my paper (I used 9×12 and 10×14 size sheets), so I just float mounted my art within the frame using foam mounting squares.

Step 3. Choose 2-5 colors from the 30-color Koi Water Color Field Sketch Travel Kit and add them to the detachable palette. Lay a sheet of water color paper on a flat work surface protected with paper towels or newspaper. Paint one sheet of watercolor paper in each color. My favorite color combinations ended up being purple paired with a coral-peach tone and Prussian blue paired with rose pink – but pick any color combination that speaks to you. You could even do a rainbow-inspired ombré! If you’re using the letter stickers to create your phrase, paint over the stickers your desired color. Let dry. If necessary, add a second coat to create a more saturated hue. Let dry.

Step 4. Once the paint is completely dry, you can either remove the 2″ letter stickers to reveal the letter outline underneath (ta da!) – or use a pencil to write your phrase over the dry watercolor in tall and skinny block letters. If you’re going the second route, try to use the lightest possible pencil lines. I made mine a little darker so you would be able to see them, but the pencil lines should be as light as possible so that you can easily erase them later, if needed.

Step 5. Lay the watercolor paper on a cutting mat, and carefully cut out the individual letters using a craft knife. If necessary, use an artist eraser to erase any remaining pencil lines around the cut out letters.

Step 6. Layer the other sheet of watercolor paper under the sheet with the phrase cut out. Use foam mounting squares or glue to secure the two pieces of paper together. Then pop into a frame and enjoy!

Navy Blue Calligraphy Elopement Celebration Invitations

Happy Monday everyone! And happy first official day of Summer! We’re starting the week with these gorgeous navy blue calligraphy elopement celebration invitations from Victoria at Design House of Moira, which feature Victoria’s beautiful calligraphy on equally stunning raw edge cotton paper. And that tagline: we fell in love, so we ran away. Utterly romantic and so perfect for an elopement celebration!

From Victoria: Working with Marina from Bustle Events, we designed this suite for an elopement celebration, using the phrase “we fell in love, so we ran away” as the theme. We really wanted to embrace the destination aspect of the celebration, tying in natural edges and shades of blue.

The invitation itself announces their elopement and invites guests to join them at the bride’s parents home upon their return home. We really loved the idea of using paper with a raw edge and choose to go with handmade 100% cotton rag paper from Fabulous Fancy Pants. We paired the handmade paper with slooping brush lettering, and paired it with a formal serif font.

I also hand painted a large piece of artwork for the bride in monochromatic blues, and used that artwork to be printed as their envelope liners. Each invitation suite was wrapped in hand dyed, hand frayed silk ribbon and tucked into a crisp white cotton envelope.

The address calligraphy matched the same brush lettering throughout the suite, paired with vintage stamps in shades of blue. Each envelope was sealed with a white wax seal with calligraphy detail.

The cocktail menus were printed on the same 100% cotton rag paper and featured a “his & hers” signature cocktail. We also created a larger scale artwork piece of the quote we used in the suite featuring the couple’s wax seal.

The 2016 National Stationery Show, Part 5

Earlier this week I shared a recap from the 2016 National Stationery Show that was all about color – or at least the first installment of that theme, since there were a LOT of colorful exhibitors at this year’s show! Well, this recap is all about FOIL, from the now classic gold foil to my current favorite hologram foil and everything in between! In some booths foil was definitely one of the brightest stars of the show, while other exhibitors used foil sparingly to complement offset or letterpress printed designs. First up, the ladies of The Social Type with an exuberant booth full of glittering and shiny foil!

Mon Voir Wedding Collection

I’m a huge fan of the calligraphy and illustration work from Jenna of Mon Voir. Jenna’s calligraphy style is so unique (and so beautiful) and her floral illustrations are just magic. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Jenna on a couple occasions over the last two years: she designed my second daughter’s birth announcements in 2014 and we collaborated on a limited edition art print last year! I was thrilled when Jenna told me that she had created a brand new wedding invitation collection based on her four most popular custom design styles. Four ready made invitation suites offer bold watercolor floral illustrations, delicate botanical illustrations, and calligraphed text paired with modern type, with printing methods ranging from digital to letterpress to foil. Such a great option for design-minded couples on a budget! Here’s a closer look at the collection:
