OSBP at Home: Nine Stylish Outdoor Coffee Tables

Last year, I shared the reveal of our backyard makeover. We’ve made a few major improvements over the four years that we’ve lived in our home, including building a pergola over the backyard and installing central air conditioning (no more window units, yay!). Earlier this spring, we put in all new windows, which are now black on the outside – I loooooooooove them so much! I owe you guys new photos! But sadly, our DIY outdoor coffee table that you saw in last year’s reveal didn’t make it through the winter, so I’m now on the hunt for a new outdoor coffee table – and I thought I’d take you on the journey along with me!

OSBP at Home: Our Backyard Makeover

Photo Credit: Yetta Reid Photography from Our Backyard Makeover

Our backyard is long and narrow, so I’m looking for either another round coffee table or a narrow rectangular coffee table with a fairly small footprint. I’m hoping to avoid most of the plastic wicker outdoor furniture that we see in most big box stores these days, and I’d love to bring in something with a modern vibe to balance the traditional architecture of our 1920s home. I’m thinking of lighter wood tones paired with a black powder coated base (and maybe staining our current wood bench black??) or cement for durability. But I also found a couple of pretty mosaic options! Here’s what I’ve found so far:

Nine Stylish Outdoor Coffee Tables

From top left:

1. This round coffee table looks like carved stone, but is made from resin and fiberglass – so it’s freeze- and mildew- resistant!

2. + 3. I love that Article is expanding into outdoor furniture! They have two solid outdoor coffee table options with really modern, clean lines in both a rectangle and round shape.

4. I love the clean lines of this industrial chic coffee table, and I feel like it’s a classic shape that we could enjoy for years to come.

5. + 6. Hello, beautiful mosaic tables! This CB2 table has a glamorous capiz shell mosaic with brass hairpin legs, but I love the deep teal tones in this mosaic table from Anthropologie (and it’s currently on sale!)

7. I love, love, love the white washed finish on this rectangular coffee table

8. A cement top paired with a wood base in this Safavieh coffee table (found on Amazon!)

9. I like the juxtaposition of the more traditional shape paired with a modern cement finish on this coffee table (from the Home Depot!)

Okay, help me decide! Which one should I pick??? I’m kind of leaning towards 4, 7, or 9 – but it’s so hard to choose! Also, if any of you have found any stylish outdoor coffee tables lately, please share them in the comments! I’m still on the hunt!

Nine Ways to Incorporate Calligraphy Into Your Wedding

If I have a weakness for anything, it’s calligraphy. As far as I’m concerned, calligraphy is magic and elevates everything it touches to a work of art. Today I’m sharing nine ways to incorporate calligraphy into your wedding, for those of you in wedding planning mode who are as calligraphy-obsessed as I am!

1. The Invitations and envelopes

First things first – the wedding invitations! When most of us think about wedding calligraphy, we think of envelopes with beautifully calligraphed addresses. And I’m definitely all in favor of going all out for the envelopes, but you can also use calligraphy for your entire wedding invitation! Depending on your budget and guest list size, you could ask a calligrapher to hand write each invitation entirely in calligraphy or brush lettering – like these hand lettered Sumi ink invitations – or commission something called spot calligraphy, where a calligrapher writes out a few words (usually your names and maybe the venue or location) and digitally scans the lettering to incorporate into the final invitation design. There are calligraphy styles to suit every type of wedding: classic and elegant, modern, bohemian, whimsical, and plenty of examples of spot calligraphy in our wedding invitation archive!

2. Wedding Welcome Signs

Large signs are the perfect way to welcome guests to your wedding! Wedding welcome signs can be made out of anything from large pieces of plexiglass to reclaimed wood to an oversized tropical leaf. Looking for even more wedding sign inspiration? You’re in luck! I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to this topic right here!

3. Ceremony Backdrop

I love the idea of using a favorite quote or a meaningful phrase written in gorgeous calligraphy to serve as a wedding ceremony backdrop! Text can be painted onto fabric (white cotton curtains or even a bed sheet would do the trick!), written onto a roll of art paper, or even printed using a service like Spoonflower!

4. Seating Charts & Escort Cards

Seating charts and escort cards serve the extremely helpful purpose of letting your guests know where to sit at the reception – but they can also be beautiful! The difference between a seating chart and escort cards is that a seating chart is usually organized by table number, with the names of each guest at that table below, while escort cards are individual cards alphabetized by guest name that help escort guests to their table. Either way, your guests’ names will look absolutely amazing in calligraphy!

5. Place Cards

A seating chart or escort card will get your guest to the appropriate table, but if you’re planning on assigned seating at your wedding, you’ll also need place cards. I love these simple color-dipped place cards with deckled edges – or beautiful calligraphy tags pinned to gold spray painted faux fruit for a fall wedding. Plenty more place card ideas right here!

6. Drink and Dinner Menus

Planning to offer a signature cocktail? Share the options with your guests with a beautiful calligraphy bar sign! And individual dinner menus  can even double as place cards by writing the name of each guest at the top!

7. Table Runners

This one is a bit outside the box, but wouldn’t a calligraphed table runner be the perfect addition to the head table for a romantic wedding? Similarly to a wedding ceremony backdrop, ask your calligrapher to write your wedding vows or a favorite poem onto a roll of butcher paper or art paper, making sure that the text appears only on each side of the table so that it isn’t covered by your centerpieces!

Calligraphy by Rachel Jacobson / Photo Credit: Milton Photography via 100 Layer Cake

8. Chair Signs

I love the idea of creating special signs for the bride and groom’s chairs at the wedding reception. Calligraphed signs (or fabric banners) could be the answer! They also look amazing with a little posy of flowers to accent the sign.

Calligraphy by Li Ward / Photo Credit: Dylan Howell and Sarah Byrne

9. Favor Bags

Last, but not least, send your guests home with a sweet little favor bag! Ask your calligrapher to make you a rubber stamp with your names or initials in calligraphy, then stamp it on cotton muslin bags and fill with your favorite treat!

Behind the Stationery: 1Canoe2

Happy Tuesday! We’re back with another installment of Behind the Stationery featuring one of the best in the business, Beth Snyder of 1Canoe2! Beth moved back to her small town roots and shares how this is so important to her daily life and business. Having been in the business for 10 years and now managing 10 employees, Beth is here to share how she keeps the look and feel of 1Canoe2 consistent and each collection consistent across the brand after all this time. Take it away, Beth! —Megan Soh

From Beth: I have always been a visual person. I don’t remember a time when I didn’t love to draw, look at photos of far away lands in my parents’ National Geographic magazine, do crafts, and generally “make stuff.” This love of art mixed with my tendency to dream really big led me to start several little companies which served as a vehicle to sell my creations and enhanced the planner side of my personality.

I got a BFA in Graphic Design and Fibers from the University of Missouri (Mizzou) and while I was there, I worked almost full time at the local NBC affiliate TV station doing every kind of design work you can imagine. And when you work at a small company and show some initiative, you get to have a lot of responsibility! I designed TV sets, graphics for the news, logos, signage, and marketing materials. When I graduated I looked around and didn’t think I could find a creative job close to home, so I headed to Nashville, Tennessee (before it was the hot thing to do) and worked at the CBS affiliate there for 6 years. I won an Emmy for graphic design in television, and I also met my husband!

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

I never lost my intense sense of homesickness for gravel roads, big open skies, and being a small town dweller. We moved “back home” to our sweet little town of Fulton, Missouri (population: 12,000).

I’ve always had a penchant for selling a little something that I made. At the end of my stay in Nashville, I got a tiny Kelsey Excelsior 5×8 letterpress and learned everything I could from blogs, a friend, and internet forums. Pretty soon, I called up my childhood friend who was a talented artist and told her to send me some of her drawings and I would make plates which we could print together. 1canoe2 was born! That was almost 10 years ago, and studio locations and iterations of the business structure have come and gone. Now we have 10 employees, our own building in our historic town, and a following of really devoted fans who love to see what we’re up to on Instagram!

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

I’d love to tell you a little bit about our corner of the world, because we believe it’s at the very center of our success. We’re based in the middle of a rural part of the Midwest. There’s a grand total of 40,000 people who live in our county. A mile from my house in the middle of town, you’ve got dirt roads and corn fields—and I love it! I can go out rainbow chasing and post it on Instagram before it’s faded.

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

I live just 4 blocks from our studio/warehouse/paperie, on the same street which allows me to walk or ride my bike to work. It’s in an historic home near the downtown Brick District and we love it a lot. My husband, daughter, and our dog Trixie and I walk downtown at least once almost every day. All the little small town parades go right past our front porch. If you’re gonna go small town, do it up!

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

Our studio space is 5,000 square feet right in the middle of the historic business district and it was built in 1902. When I purchased the building in 2016, it hadn’t been inhabited for about 9 years, but in previous lives it had been a bank, a lawyer’s office, and an insurance company. It was definitely a space that required major vision to see through the 12 (!) layers of wallpaper, drop ceilings, maroon carpet, and the 1980s wallpaper. But from the moment I first stepped in the building, I saw a few architectural details that hinted to the treasures that had been concealed with generations of bad taste and small budgets. My favorite discoveries were the intact 14-foot pressed tin ceiling that was actually hidden above an 8 foot ugly fluorescent light drop ceiling, and the curved corner wall on which we painted a mural in the Paperie.

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

Now we have a bright sunny office for our team, and a little shop that is a benefit to the community, that is also the most incredible playground for me as a designer and product developer. It’s also amazing to experience the wholesale industry from the side of the buyer – who is our main customer! It’s made us much better at customer experience for sure.

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

We are artists and, first and foremost, an illustration company. We happen to sell our artwork on stationery like cards, calendars, planners, etc., because paper is our passion. We started out as a letterpress company with a couple of presses in a barn, and now we use an offset printer to produce our full-color illustrations.

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

Our business is unique because of our signature style and the influences that surround us here in the rural Midwest. We hope that our fans could see a card in a shop and immediately know it’s ours. We put a lot of heart and soul into the artwork, and we lead with our paintbrushes.

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

Our creative process is collaborative, and starts with a brainstorming session with every member of the team from shipping and production up to me. We all throw out ideas that we think might make interesting cards — either visuals or wording. The actual design process then goes to the art team, which consist of me as the creative director (and I do a little of the art) and two artists who paint to their individual strengths.

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

Since we’re three individuals working as a team to create a cohesive look, we have had to hone our process. For our big collections, like the new Goldenrod which we just launched, we work for about a year from a creative brief. Last summer I was really inspired by all the warm, peachy-golden light at the end of August; so I created a creative brief that listed out all the visuals that came to mind and created a vision board of sorts. During one of our art meetings, I presented the concept to Haley and Kate and over the next couple of weeks they went out and pulled their own inspiration images and phrases and added to the brief. We reconvened, and started making artwork based on this creative brief.

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

It’s definitely a fluid process, and we’re fine tuning it for our next collection, but I think we achieved our goals of creating an exciting, cohesive collection that has a clear intention. As we’re working on new products for the year, we’re painting new artwork and also using other artwork from the collection to put onto sketchbooks, notepads, cards, etc. But when it’s time to release all the new products, we have a massive library of artwork that can be used for future projects.

Behind the Stationery: 1canoe2

We thrive on a flexible work environment, but we have a lot of projects and we work as a team, so we have meetings. Generally, everyone is at the office on Mondays. We have staff meeting in the morning, and creative meetings in the afternoon. I personally spend a lot of time on big ideas and licensing partnerships. I think it’s my job to keep the company moving forward and creating amazing new things for our audience. I don’t know if it’s possible to accomplish all the big dreams we have, but our team is dedicated to trying!

Paper Party 2018! Colorful Modern Abstract Art Party Inspiration

As promised, I’m sharing the photos from this year’s Paper Party during the National Stationery Show! As you saw with the invitations and save the dates, our party inspiration was driven by a non-traditional color palette – mustard yellow, pale pink, peach, lavender, navy blue, and forest green – and modern abstract shapes. For those of you looking for some colorful modern abstract art party inspiration, we’ll be sharing all the fun party details with you today! This year’s party featured a TON of balloons, a gorgeous art print wall, a hand painted paper art installation, and a calligraphy bar! It was such a wonderful evening with some of the most lovely people in the stationery industry, and together we raised more than seven thousand dollars to help support women’s empowerment and equal rights!

Paper Party 2018 / Colorful Modern Abstract Art Party Inspiration

This was my fifth year organizing a major party for the stationery industry during the National Stationery Show. In the past, we’ve always done a free party, but this year I wanted to do something a bit different and find a way to give back in a small way. So I joined forces with Writes for Women, an advocacy group for the stationery industry that helps raise money for women’s empowerment and equal rights via the Ms. Foundation. We sold tickets to this year’s party and ended up raising more than $7,100 – more than I had ever imagined in my wildest dreams! Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who came to the party for making this possible!

This year’s party was again held at Hudson Terrace on their rooftop terrace. My talented friend (and professional event planner) Janice from Bellwether Events helped me plan the party, along with Melinda of Lion in the Sun and Caroline of CW Pencils (my party planning partners in crime from Writes for Women). And of course the party would not have been possible without our amazing sponsors, including Paper & Ink Arts, Mixbook, Legion Paper, Bella Figura, Sakura of AmericaHester & Cook Design Group, 1canoe2, and the National Stationery Show, and our fantastic creative partners Ramona & Ruth, Sam Teich, Lillian Farag, Farmette Press, and Meant to Be Calligraphy. Let’s get to all the fun details!

Paper Party 2018 / Colorful Modern Abstract Art Party Inspiration

Okay, so first – the balloons! I knew that I wanted to incorporate a balloon installation into our party décor this year, and it turned out so fun and colorful! (We used Balloon Saloon for those of you who might need something similar in NYC) We used balloons in shades of pink, peach, deep yellow, teal, and purple – and calligrapher Sam Teich used some of Sakura of America’s Permapaque markers to letter a few fun party phrases on the balloons! It was super easy!

We also made this really fun paper art installation in collaboration with artist Lillian Farag and Legion Paper! I was feeling super inspired by our save the date and invitation design by Ramona & Ruth, so I came up with the idea of creating this installation using sheets of Colorplan and Stonehenge Aqua watercolor paper from Legion Paper. Lillian painted on the Stonehenge sheets in her signature free flowing style, and we layered Lillian’s pieces together with the Colorplan paper in lavender, candy pink, fuchsia pink, citrine, park green, forest green, and imperial blue. Stay tuned for a more detailed DIY post so you can create one of these installations for your own party!

And can we talk about this Mixbook art print wall? So gorgeous! Mixbook works with an amazing roster of artists, including Hello!Lucky, 1canoe2, Black Lamb Studio, Ashley Goldberg, and Amy Tangerine – totally perfect for our colorful evening! The art print wall featured a mix of canvas prints and acrylic block prints, and each print was either super colorful or had a message of women’s empowerment – or both!

I also love having an interactive element at the party – and this year it was a calligraphy bar in collaboration with Paper & Ink Arts! The uber-talented Sam Teich hung out ALL night to do calligraphy demos using a variety of Paper & Ink Arts tools and materials, including this Paint Your Own Oblique Holder, this pointed oblique holder with a Tachikawa G Nib, a Fintec Metallic Palette, Ziller Ink in Wild Viola Violet and Wild Rose Pink, Sumi Ink, and a Size 1 Princeton Series Round Brush.
