Behind the Stationery: Hello!Lucky

The ladies of Hello!Lucky are busy moms and stationers based in beautiful San Francisco. These savvy business women are here sharing their experiences in partnering with a printer and expert tips on hiring staff. As a former stationery studio manager myself, I think their advice is so crucial for small businesses looking to attract top talent amongst the big corporations.  â€“Megan

Eunice: I was a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. I was working retail in a boutique pet store on the weekends and designing the store’s windows. I offered to create a line of dog and pet-themed cards for the owners because the existing options were pretty skimpy, and it was from there that Hello!Lucky was born. Searching for a way to print my own work, which would allow for more ability to experiment and keep initial overhead low, I took a class at the San Francisco Center for the Book and was immediately hooked. Having some issues with restraint, I bought a press on eBay the next week and our letterpress card business was born.

Sabrina: I was working as an education strategy consultant having just gotten my MBA from Stanford Business School. I have a degree in Art History and had focused professionally on arts education and helping emerging artists access funding and build their careers. I offered to help Eunice, the most talented artist I knew at the time, start the card business and quickly fell in love with being an entrepreneur and returned to my passion for merging creativity and business.

We’re based in San Francisco, in a studio space in Eunice’s home, a historic Edwardian in the Haight Ashbury district. We’re lucky to have sweeping views of the city, a couple friendly studio dogs, and a few studio babies to keep things entertaining!

Eunice: I am constantly juggling work and kids and everything else. My day starts at 6:30 in the morning (yay, kids!) and ends around midnight. The first order of business is a giant mocha to get the gears turning! A double shot of espresso may be the most critical element in my creative workflow. Most of my time is spent designing new cards and working on other client projects. I’ve been slowly but surely moving beyond just cards, so as of late, there are always a new and exciting things in the works, like designing textiles for a swimwear line (I spent a whole day drawing bitchy looking persian cats on a background of diamonds – it really doesn’t get better than that!). My job is, at times, ridiculous in the best way possible. In between design projects, we are constantly working on bits and bobs for marketing and brainstorming the next batch of card ideas.

My biggest struggle is juggling my kids, life and work – luckily, I’m the queen of multi-tasking and Imogen is a reasonable studio baby (Alex is remarkably tolerant of the endless episodes of Elmo and constant and thorough destruction of the studio). I also have an awesome nanny a couple days a week and a great (and patient!) husband who, at the moment, is at home and spends a lot of time with Gigi so that I can beaver away in peace.

Sabrina: I work weekday mornings and all day on Thursdays; my day typically consists of checking email, brainstorming / reviewing card designs with Eunice and Alex, and then working on various marketing and advocacy campaigns such as Write_On and Share Trade, and the book I am writing. As a busy mom of three, I get a lot of my work done in the “spaces in between.” For example, I “write” via voice memo during my commute, and use any moments of downtime to cross things off my to-do list so that I can be fully engaged with work during work time and kids during kid time.

We work in collaboration with the fabulous Egg Press in Portland, Oregon. They do all our printing (letterpress) and distribution. We used to do all of our own letterpress printing in our San Francisco studio and we also offered custom digital printing through a trade printer in the Bay Area. Once we decided to stop doing custom printing (e.g. wedding invitations) and focus exclusively on our greeting card business and licensing our designs, we realized it made sense to partner. Egg Press is a company that we love and it’s been a great, mutually beneficial experience collaborating with them: they have a large studio, a wonderful production staff, and complementary products, customers, and distribution. We share similar values and vision and have found that, working together, we can grow both our businesses more effectively than they could have developed on their own.

We started hiring employees in 2003. Our first employees were friends, including Eunice’s roommate, Sabrina’s old room mate, Eunice’s cleaner, and Sabrina’s old friend who was living in London and offered to start our London office out of her apartment. We didn’t have a recognizable brand to attract employees, so we relied on hiring people who already knew us and had faith in what we were doing. Later on, we started hiring people for real by posting jobs on Craigslist and using our growing network of business acquaintances to get the word out (this was pre-Facebook and LinkedIn).

Over the years, we’ve hired dozens of people and been fortunate to get great employees across the board. The process typically has was handled by Sabrina and consisted of putting together a job description and posting it / sharing via email with friends and acquaintances.

Here are 5 things we’ve learned about hiring and attracting great employees:

1) Have a compelling vision for your business.
Communicate where your business is going and the values that you stand for.
2) Have confidence in yourself as a small business.
Small business owners often lack confidence because they can’t afford to pay big corporate salaries. The reality is that there are tons of people who *want* to work in a small business environment where they’re not just some replaceable cog in the wheel, and will have opportunities to see how running a business works up close and wear multiple hats.
3) Give your employees a lot of responsibility and treat them like co-owners of your business.
This is totally win-win – they get great leadership experience and a sense of ownership and engagement that leads to higher productivity, creativity, and commitment.
4) Make your small business a fantastic stepping stone to bigger / better opportunities by giving your employees lots of responsibility.
Many of our employees went on to great jobs at large companies like Paperless Post and Williams-Sonoma, started their own small businesses, or got admitted to top-tier business schools (Cornell and Kellogg).
5) Make up for what you can’t pay in salary with an awesome work environment.
Encourage people to have fun, be positive, and be a flexible and compassionate manager. Liking the people you work with and looking forward to going to work every day is harder to find than you think – that alone will attract great candidates and get them to stay.

In the interview process:

1) Pay attention to passion, intelligence, communication skills, desire to learn, and self-awareness.
If someone has these attributes, their past work experience becomes practically irrelevant since they can quickly learn what needs to be done on the job and will be a great team player and contributor.
2) Find out why the person made the key decisions in their life.
How they chose their college and major, or how and why they chose their past jobs and/or chose to leave them reveals a ton about whether their values and motivations are aligned with those of your business and the rest of your staff.
3) Get to know the candidate on a personal level as much as you can during the interview.
Their personal character traits will matter more in the long run than their most recent job experience. If the person is someone you’d want to be friends with, or who you might have a professional crush on, that’s a great sign.
4) Trust your intuition.
Don’t pay too much attention to surface level resume details like working at sexy or well-known large corporations, fancy-sounding job titles, etc. Hire the whole person, not the image they project on paper.

We count ourselves so lucky to get to spend every day doing what we do. Doing the creative work is definitely the most interesting part of the business! There has been more than one occasion when we’ve stopped to laugh at the fact that we spend a good part of each day trying to come up with butt and unicorn related puns and marveled at the ridiculousness that is our job. Working out new concepts and figuring out new collaborations keeps things interesting. We love exploring new outlets for our designs and collaborating with other cool and inspirational brands.

Eunice: We get inspiration everywhere! I love to travel and do as much traveling as two kids and our crazy busy lives allow. I’ve done some of my best work on the road. I’m a sponge for texture, pattern, color and trend inspiration. Valencia Street in San Francisco is one of my favorite places to pick up on visual inspiration; there’s so much creativity happening here right now. I’m also heavily influenced by French and Japanese style and culture.

That being said, I think our most creative space is really our studio – the three of us get together, bringing our individual influences to the table and the creative juices really get going. I do my best work when I have Alex and Sabrina around for feedback and brainstorming!

Sabrina: I get a lot of my inspiration from reading and writing. I read a new book every couple of days. I also do a lot of brainstorming while driving, and I keep my phone with a dark screen (so I don’t wake up my husband) by my bedside so I can capture ideas in the middle of the night in Evernote

We also love figuring out new ways to connect with and inspire our customers. The Write_On campaign is a great example: it’s a campaign to challenge our fans to write 30 letters in 30 days for National Letter Writing month in April. The campaign has inspired our customers and fans to connect with friends and family and to give thought to people that they might not normally stop to thank. It’s also great for our brand and greeting card sales – this year we brought on Paper Source and a handful of our independent boutique customers on board, and it’s been great for their businesses as well.

How To Create Floral Arrangements for a Cocktail Party

I organize a big cocktail party during the National Stationery Show each year called the Paper Party. It’s just a fun way for our stationery community to get together one night while we’re all in town and have a great time! The floral arrangements from Soirée Floral are always amazing, and we were super lucky to have Flower Muse as our floral sponsor this year! If you aren’t already familiar with Flower Muse, they’re an online service that offers flowers directly from the farms that grow them – everything from dahlias to sweet peas. My eyes start flashing little red hearts whenever I browse the selections at Flower Muse, but right now I’m especially smitten with this gorgeous Curcuma flower!

From Eleanor: Cocktail parties usually consist of smaller tables or various spaces spread out through your home or venue. It may seem daunting to decorate with fresh flowers for a cocktail party but it can be very easy to DIY and doesn’t require a large budget.

Tip 1: Stick to smaller arrangements. The table space at cocktail parties is usually smaller and more limited, so create arrangements that are at the right scale. A beautiful but huge floral centerpiece is going to look out of place and take up too much table real estate on a cocktail table. Keep your arrangements low and tight so you aren’t blocking your guests’ view and your guests also won’t have to worry about errant blooms or leaves falling in their drinks!

Tip 2: A few stems can go a long way. Creating smaller arrangements doesn’t mean that your party will look sparsely decorated. Don’t underestimate how you can transform and brighten up a room by dotting the space with numerous small vases of a few blooms. Choose flowers that can easily make an impact – like a single peony bloom or a few roses.

Tip 3: You don’t need a big budget. Since the arrangements are smaller, that means you can get away with buying fewer stems and you can stretch that budget with more budget friendly flowers (like roses) and complement and fill in gaps with greens (purchased or foraged from your own backyard).

Tip 4: If you don’t have much experience with floral design, keep things simple. Stick to a single color that complements your party (mono-chromatic) or stick with one type of flower (mono-botanical). These tend to be much easier to arrange.

Tip 5: If you have a little more experience, don’t be afraid to mix things up. Use contrasting flower colors or colorful or sparkly vases to create interesting focal points. Group multiple small arrangements together to create the look of something bigger while still maintaining table space.

Tip 6: Go big with one statement piece. For your cocktail bar, hors d’oeuvre station, or check-in table, where there is more room and where everyone will walk by, you can create a larger arrangement to help fill in your space and tie everything together. Don’t be afraid to go taller here, since you don’t need to worry about impeding conversations.

Tip 7: Avoid high allergen and overly fragrant flowers. Flowers like lilies, amaranthus, solidago (aka goldenrods), and gerbera daisies can set off allergies for those who are particularly sensitive to flower pollen. Also fragrant flowers like freesia, tuberose, gardenia, jasmine and some garden roses may smell nice, but could interfere with your guests enjoying their drinks (particularly if it’s a wine party!).

So You Want to Get into the Stationery Business: A Brief Overview

It’s been such a fun week guest blogging here at OSBP. Thanks for following along with me! (Don’t forget, OSBP readers get 25% off all items in the Happy Cactus shop through June 15. Use code OSBP25 at checkout.) I am often asked how I got my start in this industry and thought that as we wrap things up I could offer some thoughts and pieces of advice for those of you who may be thinking of launching your own stationery or greeting card line.

One of the greatest things I love about the community of stationery and greeting card designers is that it is truly is a welcoming community that supports newbies. I received so much advice and assistance when I launched Happy Cactus Designs’ first collection in 2011. I never imagined how nice and helpful fellow designers would be to me. I was also fortunate enough to take a continuing ed class on launching a greeting card business at New York’s School of Visual Arts with Joyce Wan and shortly thereafter took Tradeshow Bootcamp’s webinars. Both helped immensely and introduced me to many good friends I’ve made in this industry.

So, Where to Begin?

Do you have dreams of crafting a collection of greeting cards? Have you just opened an online shop? Are you thinking about exhibiting at a tradeshow? Here’s some valuable tips I’ve learned along the way.

  • Create a cohesive collection that exemplifies your own personal style. Think about what distinguishes your work from everyone else’s out there. Is it your spectacular hand lettering? Your innovative printing method? Your funny puns and play on words? Play to your strengths and focus on what makes your work unique. It takes a lot of work to build an initial collection, but debuting with 20+ designs will help give people a greater sense of what your work is all about.
  • Do your own research on the industry and build relationships with vendors. I can’t tell you how much time I spent Googling questions as I designed my initial collection and laid the groundwork for what would become Happy Cactus Designs. (Full disclosure: I still spend a ton of time with my pal Google. The struggle never ends.)
  • Invest in getting samples of your work from various printers if you are outsourcing the job. Research local printers and online printing options. Don’t be afraid to ask questions either. Coming from a non-design school background, I had no idea what the difference between RGB and CMYK was or how to set up a file with bleeds. Just ask!
  • Trial and error: Trust me, it takes a LOT of trial and error to get things right. Every designer has a story about the cards that were printed incorrectly, or the catalogs with horrible ink bleeds, or the printing press that broke down just as a big print run was to begin. Just remember it’s all part of the learning process!
  • Observe what is happening in the stationery industry. OSBP is the best resource for doing this as Nole has her finger on the pulse of all things paper. Stationery Trends, a quarterly magazine targeted specifically to the trade, is another great place to scope out new trends and to read interviews with both designers and shop owners.
  • Be respectful of other designers. Each has been in your position and while some may freely share their sources/vendors, others may be reticent to share this information as they have spent a lot of time working to get things right (see the points above!).

Over the years I’ve learned techniques to improve my product photography. It takes a lot of time and practice and many outsource this job.  You can imagine my surprise when the shot above was featured on the cover of Stationery Trends!

  • Think about how you want to sell your cards:
    • Research and sign up for local craft fairs. Listen closely to customers as they can provide a wealth of feedback on your products. Are they looking for particular types of cards? What designs are they responding to? Are your price points on target?
    • Consider an online storefront: Etsy or your own shop, or both. I could write an entire post on my thoughts about the two (I run my own e-commerce site via Shopify and have an Etsy storefront that plays second fiddle to my store). Each has its own set of pros and cons and building an online shop takes a tremendous amount of work upfront. From product photography and marketing to packaging and shipping, it’s no small feat to open an e-commerce site, but it’s one of the best ways to establish your brand.
    • If you are thinking about dipping your toes in the wholesale pool, seek out opportunities to learn how it all works. It is an entirely different beast. My personal favorite learning tools include Tradeshow Bootcamp, Eva Jorgensen of Sycamore Street Press’ class on Atly, local continuing ed classes, Emily’s brilliant Brick and Mortar column here on OSBP, and Meryl Hooker and Rob Fortier’s book on the industry. I’ve also found that talking to shop owners I’ve grown friendly with is a great way to get pointed advice about the world of wholesale.

My first booth at the National Stationery Show in 2012. Exhibiting at a tradeshow takes a tremendous amount of work. Looking back, there’s many things about my debut that I’m proud of and many things I’d change. Drawing on the walls, while risky, was my favorite part.

  • Say yes to new opportunities! Some of my best learning experiences came from just saying yes to new projects, inquiries, professional development opportunities, and events.

Brick + Mortar: I know the feeling.

“Actually, I had a panic attack. It happened in the middle of the Javits center. In the middle of the Stationery Show. It was terrifying. It knocked the breath out of me. It happened in an instant. Minutes before I’d been laughing, I’d been fine.” Has it happened before? “Yes, once. I was on a plane to Italy, traveling alone. I was 16.” Do you know why it happened? “Yes. No. Sort of.” For the past three weeks, these are my answers when people ask how I’m feeling. It is an awkward, embarrassing reveal. But I spend my days talking about life and work. I like the meat of the conversation, the part where someone says: me too. The part that helps you breathe. ~ Emily of Clementine

I’ll spare you the details, except to say that I was devastated to leave, and lucky to be able to. A wonderful web of family and friends stepped in and got me the hell out of the city. I regained my equilibrium by talking about what happened (I also saw my doctor and got some meds). But I was surprised how quickly, so many people responded: “I know the feeling. That’s happened to me too.”

I don’t like cliches. I cringe at the idea that the world was telling me to slow down. But, hey, I had a panic attack in the middle of my favorite things, so maybe it’s time to take the long way home on this. I’m writing about it publicly because hiding it means living in fear that it will return. When you share, people shrug, or hug, or send you emails and say: me too. And you learn, you’re normal. Anxiety is part of running a business. People you admire have been here too.

I became a shop owner and a mom within the same year. Five years ago, I hit the ground running and didn’t look back. Through Clementine I found camaraderie, work I’m good at, strengths I didn’t know I had. But I forgot how to breathe. This world of creative small business owners is thick with inspiration; it zings with excitement. It is also filled with people who have a hard time turning off. We stay up late. We barrel toward the next thing. We skip everything, from lunch to vacations. We leave little space for things to go wrong. But anxiety and overwhelm lap at our heels. We all feel it, no matter how happy or pulled together we seem. Sometimes we pull ourselves together to feel it a little less.

I am not an anxious person, but obviously, something is going on. As my business grows, I have non-stop requests for reply; endless customer and vendor relationships to maintain; opportunities I can’t say no to. Each month more to-dos pile on. I was overwhelmed, but I shoved the anxiety down, yelling back: how can I be overwhelmed by a life that I love? But I am. I am anxious about how often I have to reject artists whose efforts I admire, by how many emails go unanswered. I am anxious about disappointing my husband, about money. I am fearful that I’m not making the best choices for my family, about the future.

I was juggling it all, until I wasn’t. I was happy and overwhelmed, they weren’t mutually exclusive. Together, they enveloped me, they ate up the space I had reserved for my creative life, for rest. I want that space back. To help me, I’ve called on a few favorite, kick-ass creative women, to share what they’ve learned about managing the anxiety and overwhelm of running their businesses.  I am so grateful to them for saying yes to this, for making me feel normal. I love the choir of voices. I hope you’ll share your stories too.

Lisa Congdon for her upcoming book, On Swimming: A Tribute to Life In the Water

From Lisa CongdonOne of the things I have realized is that I will never, ever get to perfection. And while that sounds terrible to most of us, it’s actually quite liberating to realize! Running a small business, especially by yourself or with a small team, can feel all-consuming (at times like you are literally drowning & cannot breathe). For a period of time right after my business took off and I got really busy, I had panic attacks every day. And when I relaxed enough to consider why I was panicking, it was always because I was afraid of disappointing someone else — a client, an art director, a customer, my agent, my wife — for not delivering perfection. That somehow if I didn’t make the perfect illustration or get the work turned in ahead of time or get home from the studio in time for dinner, I had somehow failed. I was so stressed out all the time. And so I made a conscious choice to accept (and embrace) that I will never get to perfection, ever. And that’s okay because actually no one is capable of perfection (even those people you see online who look like they have the perfect lives or businesses). I have worked super hard to get comfortable with things being messy or unfinished. I also stopped comparing myself to other people who I admired. I have worked really hard to embrace my own relaxed work pace and to focus on my own unique path. As a result, my anxiety has decreased exponentially, and I still mostly get my work done! From Emily McDowellI think a huge part of owning a small business is just figuring out how to not freak out all the time. When I get overwhelmed, I remind myself that I chose this life (thanks to Lisa Congdon for that one) and I get to choose how to respond to stress, nobody is going to die if things don’t go right, and the present moment is my only reality. Worrying about things that haven’t happened yet is a waste of time and energy, and if I’ve learned anything in my life, it’s that none of us really have a clue what the future holds. I also try to pick my battles as carefully as possible; I know I don’t have enough energy or time to deal with everything I could technically deal with, so I decide what’s most important to me and I try hard to let the rest go. And, of course, I would also be totally screwed without my small network of close entrepreneur friends. But when all else fails, Xanax is the answer. [Emily has brilliantly mastered truth-telling in her cards, but I’m a big fan of how she talks about it, and this Anne Lamott post she shared]

From Carrie Holmes: I dealt with anxiety long before owning my own business, specifically about work and job security. For years, at any job I had, I would walk through the doors fearing that today would be the day I was fired. Not for any rational reason, but because I always feared that I was an imposter – not genuinely intelligent, creative, or “good” enough. It’s a big part of the reason I decided to start my own business. Fear of failing on my own terms seemed like a better option than being fired. Of course, most of those anxieties came with me, and I developed a few new fears along the way, especially the fear of not achieving perfection with every order, every interaction. Eventually I began to accept that things WILL go wrong. Sometimes it’s out of your control, but sometimes it’s something that was very much within your control that you managed to screw up royally. But the world doesn’t end. And if you have an honest, humble discussion with whoever is on the receiving end of the screw-up, you get a chance to correct it 99% of the time. People are compassionate when you give them a chance to express it, and it helps me immensely to keep that in mind when I feel the fear rising. [Carrie just began a beautiful new textile business, though many of you know from her past-paper life running the popular Two Trick Pony.]

From Carina Murray: I actually swing more towards introversion than extroversion, which often surprises people, as I’ve been able to cultivate a professional persona that (typically) doesn’t reflect my natural resting mode. Over the years, I’ve become pretty dang good at putting myself out there and being warm, friendly and supportive to colleagues and acquaintances within this brilliant industry; that’s not to say that it is an act, but it’s not always as effortless as it may appear. A beloved high school teacher taught me the motto, “Fake it ’til you make it” and I took it upon myself to make this my own mantra in the first few years of my business. And you know what? For me, it really worked! Projecting the type of person that I wanted to become, both personally and professionally, slowly transformed me. I still need some serious recharge time after being booked with a week full of appointments, exhibiting or attending trade shows or participating in conferences, but I’ve learned and accepted that about myself and over time I have become a bit more skilled in striking a better balance. And balance is such a challenge for most of us business owners, isn’t it? I remind you all to be gentle with yourselves and to not succumb to the guilt that so often accompanies taking a much needed breath and a break, which ultimately makes us stronger individuals and business owners. [Carina has gathered some of my favorite stationery businesses under her representation with Crow + Canary and I know she often serves as confidante in addition to cheerleader for the artists behind her brands.]

I am still navigating my anxiety, learning how to say no, to slow down. I’m still sad I missed so many of you at the show. What I know is how much I’ve gained by talking, how relieved I am each time someone says;  â€œI know, I’ve been there too.” So I’m starting with this: I’ve been there too, it’s humbling and incredibly scary. But it’s also normal, it’s part of our work. Let’s talk about it, let’s listen to it. Let’s see our doctors when it gets too hard. And when we’re strong, let’s write letters, smile genuinely, offer to be the call in the middle of the night when the undertow is to heavy for someone else. Like monsters in the closet, a little light can go a long way. Let’s make some space so that creativity can win. We have better things to do.

National Stationery Show 2015, Part 3

If you love color, you’re going to LOVE today’s recap from the 2015 National Stationery Show! From bright explosions of neon to understated pastels, each of the following stationers incorporated color (and more than a few pops of gold foil) into their booths in a major way. Let’s start with Parrott Design Studio – Sarah’s booth design with colorful oversized acrylic hearts was one of my favorites from the entire show! Sarah incorporated those same colors throughout her new designs, from letterpress and gold foil greeting cards to laser cut cake toppers!
