Backyard Black Tie Wedding Invitations

Sophisticated yet laid back. These backyard black tie wedding invitations from Ashling of Lotus & Ash welcomed guests to a barefoot, relaxed, and formal wedding celebration. We love the juxtaposition of high fashion and low-key relatability! This is such a fun suite, including nods to the couple’s collegiate days where they first met. The modern calligraphy by Nicole Miyuki and classic serif typefaces make the perfect final detail of juxtaposition to pull it all together!

From Ashling: As a wedding invitation designer, it’s what I’ve come to call the “triple crown” – a collaborative bride with impeccable taste, a film-worthy love story over a decade in the making, and a shared goal to design a suite that was traditional and timeless, but didn’t take itself too seriously.

The mature, edgy, and meaningful invitation suite was such a trifecta. The thread for their wedding weekend was “Black Tie and Barefoot,” and it lived every bit up to its promise. The couple was married in front of the groom’s childhood home, followed by an elegant black tie reception held in the backyard. The celebration ended with an after party in the pool house, and the bride and groom jumping, fully clothed, into the pool.

When Steph and Mark first came to us to design their full wedding stationery suite in less than 5 months, we were beyond excited for the opportunity, but needed to get their save the dates out quickly. Still unsure of what their exact wedding aesthetics would be, we celebrated their days as Stanford students with a save the date that incorporated watercolor university ephemera and a portrait of the fraternity house where they first met. We incorporated a vintage map of Stanford from the couple’s collection as a personal, colorful envelope liner.

As the details came together for Steph and Mark’s backyard, black tie wedding, we knew we wanted to create something that was both sophisticated and formal, yet fun and modern. Aubergine envelopes with brush calligraphy opened to reveal a Carrara marble liner and foil-stamped pocket, inspired by the wedding decor.

The letterpress announcement, printed on the ever gorgeous 2-ply Crane’s Lettra, featured modern calligraphy paired with a classic serif typeface and a blind deboss detail on both the front (the couple’s monogram) and back (a rose pattern). The suite also included weekend details and reply cards with arresting typography, dark floral photography, and haphazard black watercolor swashes, digitally printed on an Indigo press on #130 Classic Crest.

Our personal favorite element from the suite? It’s nearly impossible to choose, but the attire card takes the crown. It featured glassine envelopes filled with colorful swatches to inspire guests attire and the instructions “black tie invited, shoes optional.” In our dream world, that would be the requested dress code for all weddings!

Make it Pop! Non-alcoholic Winter Citrus Punch

As a mother of two young children, my party world mostly revolves around kid parties. Birthday parties, preschool holiday parties, even the occasional outdoor picnic party when the weather calls for it. Serving punch in a big punch bowl is one of my favorite party tricks – it makes any party feel glamorous (especially for a group of kids!), and you can make it ahead of time so you aren’t rushing to get everything done on the day of the party. Today I’m excited to share a kid friendly, non-alcoholic Winter Citrus Punch recipe in partnership with Glad’s brand new Kitchen Pro trash bags. As any mom knows, post party clean up can be NO JOKE. But with 53% more bag, ForceFlex strength, LeakGuard Technology, and Febreeze Odor Control, Kitchen Pro is Glad’s biggest and strongest kitchen trash bag – making it even easier to clean up after a major event like a birthday party!

When my girls turned two and four last September, we threw a Rainbow Unicorn birthday party in our backyard, with plenty of rainbow balloons, rainbow tissue tassel garlands with iridescent sparkle, rainbow plates, napkins, and cups – and cupcakes with the cutest little unicorn picks! We also set up a craft table where our little guests could decorate their own paper unicorn with glitter glue and colorful rhinestones. The party was SO much fun, but also made a big, big mess – as you might expect from a party with fifteen little kids and their parents!

Glad Kitchen Pro Trash Bags

Luckily, big party messes are no match for Glad’s new Kitchen Pro trash bags! Kitchen Pro trash bags offer 53% more bag for cleaning up messes, from fun party messes to regular everyday messes around the house. With an inner layer of ForceFlex and an outer layer of LeakGuard, Glad Kitchen Pro bags are both stretchable and protect against leaks, so you can even toss in those half-empty cups or leftover ice without any problems. And if you’re looking for a new everyday trash bag, the stretchable strength, leak protection, and odor neutralization mean you can take your trash out less. Which is definitely something I appreciate for my little family of four (plus five cats)!

Okay, back to the punch! It’s the perfect balance of tart citrus juice and fizzy bubbles – such a fun and special treat! We used Cara Cara oranges and blood oranges since they happen to be in season right now, but this punch would easily work with regular naval oranges, or even pineapple juice later in the summer. You can make the simple syrup and squeeze the citrus juices the day before, then add the ginger ale or sparkling grape juice in a punch bowl on the day of the party.

For an adult version of this punch, consider swapping the ginger ale for champagne or sparkling wine and adding a cup of brandy. You could also add a couple rosemary sprigs to the simple syrup for a savory rosemary citrus punch. So many possibilities!

Hello everyone! Who else here loves collections? I’ve always loved collecting things and grouping like things together (the stylist in me).  I think it’s so cool when illustrations include collections, which is a common theme I’ve seen in modern illustration. That eye for collections is what caught my eye with modern illustrator Marta Abad Blay. Let’s dive in to see her illustrative hand at work. Jen

I know that animal illustrations tend to be equated with kids rooms. But the detail on these animals! This color palette! I’d happily hang this wild mix of animals on my living room wall.

Happy neon greens, bright flashes of pink, and illustrations of houseplants. What a quirky, cool illustration!

This collection of foodie items is just the kind of print to add that necessary fun touch of personality to a kitchen. Especially when you consider the kitchen is a space that’s filled with cold surfaces of tiles and countertops and practical storage. Wouldn’t this just brighten up a breakfast nook?

Who needs chalkboard paint when you can create a simple pretty mural with your child with plain old butcher paper. Marta shares that she’s fascinated by the way kids represent the world with their drawings. As an artist, she says she does not focus on “perfection but just in the most intuitive drawing, like kids do, without any pretense.”

The vivid colors make her illustrations feel happy and whimsical. And the color palette also feels decidedly modern. Marta finds inspiration in nature, like plants and animals. Including the jungle! Rather than working always in one spot, Marta draws anywhere she’s inspired.

And here’s the artist at work! Marta and her family have been living in Amsterdam for 12 years, but they’re soon moving to a little village in Spain.

I’m such a fan of her work! I love when Instagram brings you a new favorite artist to follow. I have my eye on this print for my daughter’s room. See you again soon, friends!

Tropical Art Deco Engagement Party Invitations

Love all things tropical? Obsessed with Art Deco vibes? Great! Why not combine the two? These tropical Art Deco engagement party invitations from Becca of Suite Paperie feel like The Great Gatsby took an exotic vacation to Miami! The invitations feature a gorgeous palm frond design and pretty pink flamingos, along with 1920s-inspired type selections. Such a fun way to kick off an engagement party!

From Becca: Kate and Tug threw an epic bash in Miami to celebrate their engagement. We’re so thrilled they enlisted us to help set the tone through their invitations. Kate fell in love with The Raleigh hotel in South Beach, Miami for it’s art deco feel, amazing color palette of stark black, bright white, flamingo pink and palm tree green and of course, their pool! Seriously, you have to check it out!

There were a few things that were super important to the bride. First and foremost, the invitations needed to be fun, well-designed and get her guests excited for a weekend getaway in Florida.

Tropical Art Deco Engagement Party Invitations by Suite Paperie

Using the hotel color palette, we created a punchy yet minimalistic invitation design featuring an oversized palm frond with an art deco style topography and border. Now, the back is where things really start to get awesome! We layered a variety of palm illustrations to create an oversized leaf pattern for the background, and used one of the most epic song lyrics of all time (yes, we love you Will Smith) to get guests pumped up for an all-night party in Miami. The invitation was digitally printed in full color on both sides on double-thick cover stock to create a super luxe feel that packs a huge punch with a full bleed of black ink in the background to let the pink and pool blue lettering pop.

We used vintage postcard artwork of flamingos wading in the waters of a bird farm outside of Miami; the colors matched perfectly to the invitations, and we modernized the front a bit by adding a little seal on the top left corner that read “snail mail is for lovers.” Kate reached out to us right before the party to let us know that there were multiple guests that sent back RSVPs on their own stationery because they loved the postcard too much to part with it… I LOVE guests with great taste!
