On Speaking Out

What We're Not Going to Do is Defend Nazis / Image by Darcy Dubose via Oh So Beautiful Paper

This week was confusing, exhausting, and completely enraging, as much of the last seven months has been, to be honest. To any readers in Spain, my thoughts are with you. My family took a quick impromptu trip out to the beach for a bit of mental self-care, so I’m a bit late with my Friday links this week. We really needed the time away, even if it was a super quick trip.

When it comes to recent events here at home, I’m still filled with anger at our president’s response to the horrific events in Charlottesville. This isn’t about politics for me. Yes, I am a political person with strong political beliefs, but this isn’t about party affiliation. This is about basic human decency and right and wrong. White supremacists are wrong. Neo-Nazis are wrong. Good people just don’t find themselves “accidentally” marching with people wearing swastikas and shouting hateful, racist speech. If you show up at a rally and are surprised to see people carrying swastikas, you walk away. When one choice involves Nazis and white supremacists, you choose the other side. Everything else is irrelevant.

This is also deeply personal for me. I’m a Jewish American. My grandfather and great-uncle fought against Nazis and their hateful beliefs in WWII. I cannot support a president who gives safe space to those same beliefs and hate groups.

We have a long way to go towards resolving the deeply rooted issues of racism and bigotry in our country, but in the meantime the best thing we can do is to educate ourselves, teach tolerance and empathy to our children, speak out against hateful ideologies, and deny hate groups the space to fester and grow. I’ll continue to speak up against racism, religious intolerance, and bigotry – and I hope you will, too. Silence speaks volumes in situations like these.

In lieu of my usual weekend links, I’ll leave you with a few videos, articles, and resources that I’ve found helpful this week:

Stationery A-Z: Sports Birthday Cards

Full disclosure: I’m not a big sports fan. But I am a big pun fan so when I was alerted to an increase in sports-influenced greeting cards I knew I had a winner on my hands (see what I did there?). Whether you score high in basketball, low in golf, or love in tennis, there’s bound to be something in the following round up to rank in your court. In the words of a certain blond individual, let’s get physical! Game, set, match and enjoy! – Shauna

Sports-Themed Birthday Cards

From top right:

1. May the day be fair and the waves righteous with this painted beach scene from Southern Californian Small Adventure.

2. Anne + Kate were the ones that alerted me to this trend (thanks, guys!) so including their basketball inspired design seemed like a three pointer and then some.

3. Be it a strike or a spare, this Lucky Horse Press card is anything but a gutter ball. Disco bowling, anyone?

4. There is strength in numbers making this strong man from Egg Press a perfect metaphor for birthday sentiments.

5. Send this biting, yet endearing, Wild Ink Press card to a spirited youth who knows how to take a joke.

6. Remind loved ones that a little friendly competition can be a celebration as well (gold foil doesn’t hurt either). From Hello!Lucky.

7. Technically merchandised as a congratulations card, this Emily McDowell design (for Paperless Post) works just as well as a birthday greeting (after all, aren’t you also congratulating someone on getting through yet another year?).

8. Are you as obsessed with watching synchronized swimming at the Olympics as I am? Is it true they put Vaseline in their hair? How many washings does it take to come out? Important life questions. From Rifle Paper Co.

9. Badminton + golf + tennis + croquet = Mr. Boddington’s Studio.

10. Lawn games are considered sports, right? From One Canoe Two for Postable.

Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! Are you ready for the weekend? I am! Maybe it’s the heat, but this has been an extra exhausting week for me. But I think it must be the heat, because even my 4 year-old didn’t want to get out of bed this morning! On our way to camp this morning she said she was glad it was Friday so she could sleep in tomorrow. Ha! Totally my kid. Whereever you are, I hope you’re staying cool in this heat! But in the meantime…

…a few links for your weekend!

As the Senate debates the latest version of the Republican “health care” bill, I thought this was interesting: an analysis of the problems in our health care system. I’m personally in favor of a single payer system like Medicare for All.

This DIY “like” sticker piñata is just too cute!

Loving the colors in this tassel garland

The perfect party skirt

How cute is the gingham wallpaper in this bathroom??

We just bought this sleek wood-handled dish rack and I’m LOVING it! I also have my eye on these glass storage jars with wood lids.

Thinking about making homemade pizza for dinner this weekend – this grilled pizza looks good! Anyone have a favorite homemade pizza recipe?

Newport Beach, California friends! The new Sugar Paper store at the Lido Marina Village opens to the public on Sunday, July 16th at 11 am! The first 50 visitors will receive a $25 gift card to the store. Go check it out and report back!

Behind the Stationery: Paula & Waffle

Our next installment of Behind the Stationery takes us to NYC with Paula & Waffle! Paula, the founder and illustrator behind the brand, shares about how she began illustrating, her illustration process, and where she gets inspiration for her cute and heartfelt designs. We’re so exited to have Paula (and her cute pup, Waffle) here today. Take it away, Paula! —Megan Soh

Behind the Stationery: Paula & Waffle

From Paula: Hi everyone! I feel so lucky to be doing something that I love every day and to be able to share a behind the scenes look at our stationery company with you! I started Paula & Waffle in the spring of 2014 and have loved every moment. Waffle is our five-years-young brindle white Havanese pup that my husband picked out for me for on our first engagement anniversary. He keeps me company when I’m designing and is the sweetest pup around.

Our designs are sweet and colorful and we always strive to make sure they’re friendly to customers of all ages. Our goal is to create more joy in the everyday and to really help foster connections between people.

I don’t have a traditional art or design background, so it’s been quite an interesting (and fun!) learning process for me. I graduated college in 2008 with a gender studies degree in a terrible economy, and ended up in the ad tech start-up world. I had a chance to work on incredible ideas with really smart people, but began feeling restless and burnt out. I decided to take a continuing education graphic design class at Parsons in the fall of 2013 and absolutely loved it. With the support of my amazing husband, I left my job in the spring of 2014 and jumped right into design and illustration.

The first few months were definitely tough. I spent weeks drawing and trying to develop my own style. I managed to design around 40 cards, opened an Etsy shop, and participated in a Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn that summer. Things were slow and uncertain; at the same time, a great ad tech opportunity came up and I decided to go back to working a day job in January 2015. I had already committed to exhibiting at the National Stationery Show, so I continued to plug away at the line and pitch retailers. We exhibited with 80 cards and were lucky that our hard work paid off at the National Stationery Show that spring, which enabled me to jump back into Paula & Waffle full-time.

We started out in our tiny upper west side NYC apartment and now work out of our 200 sq ft studio in Long Island City, Queens. Our building used to be the site of a car and plane engine manufacturing plant, so we’re lucky to have super high ceilings and lots of light. We package all of our paper goods ourselves, so we have walls and walls and walls of shelves and plenty of counter space. We’ve already outgrown this space and will be moving to a bigger space in August, which we are super excited about!

We’re lucky to live in one of the most vibrant cities in the world. Waffle and I (and now also Oreo, our new black and white Havanese pup) spend a lot of time in NYC parks and sketch from there. I also often work from cafes and public spaces all around the city. I draw on things I see around the city and at museums, as well as conversations I have with friends and family. Additionally, many of our collections in the past year for both paper and textile have been inspired by our trips to the National Parks, beaches (we love beaches!), and Scottish Highlands.

We currently have three fabulous ladies on our team, and we usually start our days around 10am. Every day is completely different! Some days are spent packaging cards and gift wrap, and on other days we might be re-organizing thousands of envelopes or managing inventory.

I keep a lot of notepads and sketchbooks everywhere! About once a month, I compile all of the ideas and doodles into a master list and create a color palette. From there, I usually take 3-4 days to create the next collection of greeting cards or textile patterns. I used to draw everything by hand and then scan and digitally color, but now I also do a lot of illustration work on the iPad, which has really helped streamline the process for me.

We’ve been so thrilled to see our designs on fabric via our collaboration with Dear Stella, and also as lighted marquees via our collaboration with Pulp Function. We have a few more collaborations in the works and are also planning to expand into a few other gift products soon — we can’t wait to share them with you later this year!

Until then, you can find us doodling away around NYC. You can follow along on Instagram at @paulaandwaffle and can find all of our designs on our website!

Tropical Flamingo Pink and Green Birthday Party Invitations

Summer is here and an adorable flock of pink flamingos is here to kick off summer! How fun are these tropical flamingo pink and green birthday party invitations that designer and calligrapher Holly Hollon created for her daughter’s first birthday soirée?? Tropical leaf illustrations, pink cabana stripes, touches of gold foil, and of course Holly’s beautiful calligraphy are all focal points of these gorgeous invitations!

From Holly: For Biscuit’s First Birthday, I wanted to do a backyard birthday with a tropical theme as it was the first of summer and I was feeling all the summer time vibes while planning.

I had some pink yard flamingos for years and never used them and they helped inspire the flamingo motif of the birthday party. These pink flamingos were perfect for our backyard golf course that we set up for the birthday party. Then one day in the grocery store I saw some silver urn plants and those further inspired a flamingo pink and green invitation.

I love the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Waikiki Beach and used a pink similar to the color of the hotel. Pink and green are such festive and summery colors. It was fun to play with bright colors and pull in touches of gold in the day-of party goods.

I designed scorecards with the flamingo logo and my dad crafted wooden putters for the children at the party. Napkins, koozies and cups were a fun way to have special touches and not have to go overboard with party decor. I simply love how it all came together!
