Moonrise Kingdom-Inspired Wedding Invitations

When you read the words “camping” and “Moonrise Kingdom” in an invitation submission, you know you’re in for a delightfully quirky and playful wedding invitation suite. Tori of The Cozy Gnome drew a handful of outdoorsy watercolor camping illustrations to bring these Moonrise Kingdom-inspired wedding invitations to life. Beautifully curated vintage stamps, bright mustard yellow envelopes, and simple hand lettering accent this rustic, yet whimsical, invitation suite!

From Tori: I work the old fashioned way – by putting pen to paper, starting either with the lettering or the illustrations. In this case, there were so many fun, potential visuals so I starting drawing right away. The bride gave me two concepts for inspiration: camping and “Moonrise Kingdom.” As I started illustrating the tent and the trees, my excitement rose. I knew I wanted to keep the suite playful and full of warm tones so I spent a lot of time watercoloring the illustrations, allowing the white space to come through to give the invitation suite a more whimsical and outdoorsy feel.

One of my favorite aspects of “Moonrise Kingdom” is Anderson’s homage to vintage decor and details, so I knew I wanted to incorporate that somehow. I collect vintage thermoses and knick knacks so I studied the lettering and before I knew it I was adding this chunky, retro lettering style to the suite.

It all came together better than I envisioned and dreamed; it’s just so fun and playful which really propels you as an artist. The invitation suite was printed on a heavy, matte card stock. They really just burst with personality and that mustard yellow envelope just really pops!

Tropical Seafoam and Gold Foil Save The Dates

Today’s tropical seafoam and gold foil save the dates were inspired by the destination wedding’s seaside venue of sunny Cabo San Lucas, Mexico! Designed by Clara of Goldie Design Co., this save the date combines traditional and elegant design elements with a beach-inspired color palette and plenty of shiny gold foil. So pretty!

From Clara: When designing this custom save the date, the bride wanted to incorporate the fun Cabo destination wedding vibe while keeping it very traditional and elegant. By using a beach-inspired color palette of teals and blues, along with pops of blush pink and gold, and gorgeous engagement photos taken at the beach where the wedding will take place, the guests are sure to get a good feel for this destination wedding!

The outer envelope is covered in beautiful navy blue calligraphy for the address, paired with beach-inspired vintage stamps – always a must! One of my favorite things about this navy blue ink is the way it has that flowing gradient effect throughout the letterforms. Upon opening the envelope, guests will find a seafoam green enclosure wrapped in a custom belly band. This belly band features a geometric pattern inspired by Mexican tiles found throughout the architecture of this destination, and topped off with a custom wedding monogram.

When opening the enclosure, you will first see the custom calligraphy save the date card printed in gold foil front and center. The design of this card was kept very simple so that the eye wasn’t pulled to one part of the enclosure only – the entire invitation flowed together in perfect beachy unison! The pocket to the right holds the gold foil printed accommodations card and an accordion style card with several of the couple’s engagement photos.

The bride had so many favorite engagement photos (I don’t blame her – I mean look at that beach!) that she asked me to design a creative way to display several of the images in addition to the one in the enclosure oval slot! So, this accordion card is what we ended up with, and it was a perfect little unique touch, especially with the wedding hashtag displayed on the back of the card!

Illustrated Wildflower Wedding Invitations

These illustrated wildflower wedding invitations make me sad to see summer go! Michelle of Honey Paper designed this whimsical watercolor wedding invitation suite along with the bride’s mother, drawing inspiration from the mountains of Sun Valley, Idaho. What a special gift for the bride!

Illustrated Wildflower Wedding Invitations by Honey Paper

From Michelle: It was so much fun working with the bride’s mother on this invitation suite. She wanted to do something special and unique for her daughter. We worked on creating an invitation that was inspired by the elegant wedding venue, which was surrounded by all the gorgeous, natural beauty of Sun Valley, Idaho. The color palette was forest green, lavender, various shades of plum and a touch of mustard yellow, reflecting the mustard seed plant in the area.

The clients were originally attracted to my watercolors, so we knew we had to incorporate those, but the bride’s mother wanted to make sure it was also elegant with a bit of whimsy in the wording. I started by creating a watercolor illustration of the iconic Sawtooth Mountains that lie north of Sun Valley and are the recreation destination for many visitors in the area. The watercolor mountain is painted with a variety of wildflowers in their surroundings. That image was used for a stunning envelope liner and on a small tag attached to ribbon that tied the invitation suite together.

Both the invitation and reply card were kept simple to remain elegant and let the watercolors stand out. We had the most fun with the wording, which they definitely wanted to be a bit unexpected for the recipients, but not deviate too much from tradition. “Knees Up” was used instead of the traditional “Reception to follow” and was taken from the song “Knees Up Mother Brown” from the early 1900s. The expression “knees up” came to mean a party or a dance.

To make the invitation suite extra special, the clients inserted an event card that was bordered with all the different wildflowers. This was placed on the flip side of the invitation and was a visual treat when the invitee turned the invitation over. This was all tied together with two ribbons and the custom tag.

Boho Glam Agate-Inspired Wedding Invitations

We are seriously envious of the lucky guests who received these boho glam agate-inspired wedding invitations! Designed by Melissa of Atheneum Creative, these beautiful wedding invitations were inspired by the agate motif incorporated throughout the wedding and the bride’s favorite nail polish color. So creative! The invitation suite features a custom hand painted agate-inspired design and stunning gold foil details, styled to perfection with gilded agate slices!

Boho Glam Agate Inspired Wedding Invitations by Atheneum Creative

From Melissa: Jessica came to our first meeting with nail polish for color inspiration and tons of magazine tear sheets for décor inspiration. We often hear a lot of décor terms during our invitation design process, like rustic, elegant rustic, romantic and modern… the list can go on and on! We have worked on weddings that were boho inspired and weddings that had a glamorous aesthetic, but this was the first time we heard “boho glam” as a décor term. After this wedding I am sure we will be hearing it a lot more!

They wanted to use agate details through the entire wedding, so the invitation features a custom agate-inspired painting – of course matching Jessica’s nail polish color inspiration. The agate portion was digitally printed, then duplexed to give the invitation more weight and add color on the back, and finally hit with a layer of gold foil.

For this invitation, we visited our printer for a press check to try different shades of gold foil and see what would pop best off of the digital background. We also invited the client to be right there on press with us so she could get a feel for how the digital color was laying down and be able to pick her own gold foil. We even gave her the printing plate for the gold foil when we were done.

Jessica wanted the invitations to act as a gift in the mail to her guests, something they could not wait to open! So we packaged the invitation and reply card in a gray mailing box with gray paper and addressed each box with gold calligraphy.

Nautical Navy and Gold Foil Wedding Invitations

Nautical aesthetics are so timeless and these nautical navy and gold foil wedding invitations, inspired by Cape Cod, are no exception! Laura of Paper & Honey designed this invitation suite with a simple, yet bold, color palette to complement the bride’s oceanside nuptials. Can’t you just smell the salty ocean air?!

Nautical Navy and Gold Foil Wedding Invitations by Paper & Honey

From Laura: Working on Megan and Gavin’s Cape Cod-inspired suite was a complete joy. With the current trends leaning towards lots of blush, greenery, and light, feminine details, it was so much fun to break out of that a bit and play with rich colored paper for an oceanside soiree.

Together with her wedding planner, Cape Cod Celebrations, Megan described her wedding as a “romantic beach wedding with a touch of prep.” The perfect event to close out the summer! We worked with a color palette of deep navy, crisp whites, and the loveliest gold. The invitation and information card were stamped with white and gold foils, the RSVP card was letterpress printed and gold foil stamped. All pieces were delivered to guests in an envelope crisp with hand calligraphed addresses, gold envelope liners, and vintage postage stamps.

As an accountant living in Chicago, Megan loves to mix the preppy and traditional with modern new trends. She is a huge fan of bold, beautiful calligraphy, and wanted to scrap traditional wording etiquette in favor of a large and in charge hand lettered “Megan & Gavin.” We took this element and used it in the invitation and custom address rubber stamp, and even throughout their reception stationery via menus and wooden welcome signage.

While their wedding was held in historic Cape Cod, Megan didn’t want her suite to get too kitschy and nautical. We kept it simple with the color palette and use of bold stripes on several cards, as well as a navy and white striped ribbon to hold everything together. We were able to have some fun with the lobster bake rehearsal dinner invitation by including the littlest gold foil lobster! This tiny crustacean detail brought some amusement for an otherwise gorgeously preppy suite, and it just might be my favorite part of Megan and Gavin’s wedding invitation.
