Quick Pick: Bailey Doesn’t Bark

I’m a huge fan of the ceramic goods from Bailey Doesn’t Bark (this mug is my absolute favorite), and I love it when RJ applies her signature motifs to paper goods.  The notepads, recipe card kits, and notebooks below are fantastic – and it doesn’t hurt that the packaging is pretty awesome, too.

Cristina’s DIY Under Construction House Warming Party Invitations

Ah, the joys of moving.  As much as I love decorating a new space, it always takes me several months before I feel comfortable enough in a new space to invite guests over.  Designer Cristina Pandol (you might remember her creative map moving announcements) decided to take advantage of this transitional period and her new apartment’s industrial feel when planning her house warming party.  She created invitations with an “under construction” theme using rubber stamps and leftover wallpaper from her decorating adventures.

From Cristina: After 3 months of being at my new place, I finally was getting my act together and having a house warming party.  Naturally, I needed an invitation.  Even though my place wasn’t completely put together, I figured “under construction” could be the theme for the party and my downtown Los Angeles loft would serve as the inspiration for the entire project.

Since I had painted, hung wallpaper, and sewn throw pillows all myself, I knew that the invitation had to be completely handmade.  I also wanted them to complement the very industrial and urban aesthetic of my apartment.

I drew the little tools and used Neutraface and AW Conqueror Slab for the type.  Once the design was finalized, I sent the stamp to be made and while I was waiting for that I set off to buy a ZAP! heat gun and Adirondack powder.  I stamped each invitation with clear watermark ink, then covered the wet ink with the powder, removed the extra powder by flipping the card over on a large piece of scrap paper, and then used the heat gun to melt the powder.

I decided on a light gray envelopes to match my cement floors and to use the extra wallpaper that I had hung as envelope liners so every envelope was different.  I picked a forever stamp of Gregory Peck since he’s such a Los Angeles icon and the coloring of the stamp worked with the aesthetic and color palette of the invitation.

Intricate Laser-Cut Halloween Cards

We rounded up some of our favorite Halloween cards last week, but I couldn’t resist sharing these intricate laser-cut cards from Alexis Mattox Design.  The laser-cut process seems so perfect for these Halloween designs, from the spider web to the spooky haunted house.  And if you’re not a fan of the more traditional orange and black Halloween color palette, you can choose either purple or gray to offset the black laser-cut elements.

Adrienne + Josh’s Tiffany Blue Calligraphy Wedding Invitations

I’m always a fan of wedding invitations with calligraphy, and even more so when a designer pairs calligraphy with a gorgeous color palette like Tiffany blue and coral pink!  Designer and calligrapher Holly Hollon created these classic wedding invitations, incorporating her calligraphy throughout the suite – from the names of the bride and groom to whimsical

From Holly:  Adrienne’s wedding theme was inspired by Tiffany’s.  She loves the Tiffany blue color and all her flowers we going to be shades of pink.  I used lots of the blue and pink as an accent for her paper.

She loves calligraphy, so I did their names in calligraphy and the rest of the type was neatly blocked off for a more modern and clean feel.  A wedding logo was created with a small whimsy doodle and a block font to tie back to the design of the invitation.

Mauro’s Fly Fishing Inspired 70th Birthday Invitations

Lindsay from McMillian + Furlow sent over the invitations that she recently designed for a BBQ celebrating her father’s 70th birthday.  Lindsay was inspired by her father’s favorite hobby – fly fishing – creating a type-driven postcard invitation with an illustrated salmon fly.  Such a fun way to celebrate such a monumental milestone!

From Lindsay: In honor of my dad’s monumental birthday, my family is hosting a small BBQ and celebration. “Big Mauro” is wildly passionate about fly fishing, and he ties all his own flies. With salmon season approaching, I chose to illustrate a fly meant to catch salmon as the main graphic in the postcard design.

The beautiful combinations of color and texture within each unique fly make them single works of art on their own. I married the illustration with a blend of the modern Bodoni typeface and the simply gorgeous sans-serif Proxima Nova, all in black and white. I love how the bold, dynamic typography contrasts the textures and softness in the illustrated fly.
