Printable Papel Picado Wedding Invitations from EM Papers

It’s always so fun to hear the story of how a designer was inspired to create a particular design.  Today, Eleanor from EM Papers is sharing the story behind one of her printable wedding invitation designs – a gorgeous red and white invitation suite inspired by the traditional Mexican folk art known as papel picado.  I love the bold red and white color palette and hand drawn motifs!

From Eleanor: Several years ago, when she turned 30, my sister decided to throw herself a ‘Treintañera’ since she had never had a Quinceañera.  I designed the invitations for her, using traditional design elements found in papel picado and native Mexican folk art motifs, and my dad printed them letterpress. I later turned the invitation into a blank card but always felt that the design was ripe to be extended into a full wedding suite.

One of the challenges when designing my download and print wedding stationery, is that I have to anticipate all of the constraints my customers might have.  For example, not everyone has a home printer than can do borderless printing, so I don’t use full bleeds on items like programs and table numbers.  This design had so many little elements, like the hand drawn lines and sun/starburst figure that it was easy to pick them up throughout the line and keep the whole suite coherent.

Mauro + Emmy’s Travel-Inspired Destination Wedding Invitations

Lindsay from McMillian + Furlow sent over the beautiful wedding invitations and save the dates that she created for her brother’s wedding last fall.  Lindsay was inspired to create a destination-inspired suite, from postcard save the dates to passport-style invitations.  Lindsay also created a beautiful wedding logo based on the bride and groom’s initials; the logo was incorporated on nearly every detail, from the invitations to lavender sachet ceremony programs, and even the groom’s suit!

From Lindsay: We were inspired by the idea of having a mini destination wedding on Shelter Island, and by the rich history of the Pridwin Hotel.  I also developed the M&EM logo – a play on their initials – to use on all the materials, either printed or stamped on with the custom rubber stamp.  Mauro even had it embroidered into his suit jacket!

Working with the color palette that Mauro and Emmy had chosen, I designed the save the dates to be a sophisticated play on the classic “Greetings From…” postcards.

Traveling has been a way of life for them ever since they began dating, so it was natural that this passion would be incorporated into the wedding.  The invitations were designed as passports, issued on the day of Mauro and Emmy’s engagement.

They included all the information guests would need to know – from ferry schedules to and from Shelter Island, historic facts and maps, to ceremony information, lodging, and activities.  This proved to be very useful for all the guests that would be traveling from out of state (and Italy!)

The menus were tied together with a family remembrance card and a timeline of all their travels together.  The string was carefully chosen for it’s reference to the classic Italian pastry boxes.

Bags of lavender were stamped and tied with all the ceremony information on the back.  This was our clever way of avoiding the use of a standard wedding program.

Elias + Nancy’s Watercolor Letterpress Wedding Invitations by Oh Happy Day

I credit Jordan Ferney for my obsession with watercolor and letterpress.  If you’re not already familiar with Jordan, she’s the writer of one of my very favorite blogs, Oh Happy Day (she always has the most creative ideas!) and a fabulously talented letterpress printer.  Jordan started experimenting with watercolor and letterpress last year, beginning with these business cards and her family holiday cards, and I’ve been hooked ever since.  Jordan sent over these amazing wedding invitations that she created for a destination wedding in Greece earlier this year.  The complete suite includes a bilingual invitation, accordion booklet with travel and accommodation information, along with ceremony programs and menus for the reception – and each element was watercolored by hand!

From Jordan:  The invitations were watercolored individually by hand before being letterpress printed in a very light grey ink.  The English and the invitation and the Greek invitation were then duplexed together with one language on the front and another on the back.

The accommodations and travel information were listed in an accordion booklet.  The booklet cover was letterpress printed then duplexed with a letterpress striped paper.  The inside was watercolored by hand, scored, and then it was all sewn together with metallic silver thread.

 

The complete invitation suite was tied together in silver thread.  The outer envelopes were also letterpress printed and watercolored, and addresses were calligraphed by Emilie Friday before being mailed to guests.   The menus and wedding program were also hand watercolored and printed with a dark grey ink.

Lauren + Joe’s Red and White Carnival Wedding Invitations

Lauren and Joe’s wedding invitations are so bright and cheerful, they make me happy just looking at them!  You might remember Lauren as the designer of Emily and Matt’s awesome German beer wedding invitations, and today she’s back to share the invitations from her own wedding!  Lauren incorporated big bold pops of red along with fun stripes and patterns into her booklet style wedding invitations, complementing the vintage carnival wedding theme.  So fun!

From Lauren: Our wedding had a vintage carnival theme, so we wanted the invitations not only to reflect that but also to really create some excitement about our big day.  We came up with the idea to do booklets that had the feel of old carnival or circus programs, complete with an “Admit One” ticket as the RSVP.

 

The booklet format was great because it allowed us to include a lot of information (since we were requiring guests to ride buses to the venue, etc.) and to carry out the sensationalist tone we were going for.  The booklets were offset printed on Ecru White Cotton Lettra paper.  Interior pages and other elements were printed digitally on Mohawk Loop Antique Vellum in Milkweed.

To make them even more fun and interactive, guests received the invitations in a fun, moss-filled box.  The boxes took many hours and required quite the assembly line, but we’d say it was well worth it in the end!

Joanna + Martin’s Music-Inspired Book Wedding Invitations

Longtime readers might remember the awesome pulp novel-inspired wedding invitations that Lyndsay from It’s a Date Design created for her good friends Lis and Jay (and if not, they’re definitely worth checking out!).  Well, Lyndsay is back with another awesome book wedding invitation that she created for newlyweds Joanna and Martin!  Lyndsay incorporated Joanna and Martin’s love for music into a modern book-style wedding invitation, as well as several accompanying elements for the day of the wedding.

From Lyndsay: This project was for a UK couple, librarian Joanna and IT specialist Martin.  Joanna hired me after seeing my last book invitation and we worked together to make their project unique and very personalised to them.  Joanna and Martin got engaged at the Glastonbury Music Festival in June 2010, and their invitation design was influenced by their love of music and literature.

The wedding invitation was a book with a paper slip cover, concertina-folded rather than bound, with a hidden section at the back that revealed a USB drive filled with digital goodies by the couple for each guest.

In addition to the invitation, I also designed quite a few paper items for the day of the ceremony and reception which also had a music/book theme: a music poster seating chart, record-themed menus, bookmark favors, and name badges.  The wedding program we designed together was also fun: it had a glassine envelope filled with confetti attached to the front of each booklet.
