{happy weekend!}

Happy Friday everyone! Do you have fun plans for this summer weekend? I’ve been daydreaming of a weekend trip to the beach – it’s been way too long since I last saw the ocean. Hopefully soon! In the immediate future, I’m looking forward to celebrating Andy’s first Father’s Day this weekend (yay!).  But in the meantime…

Laurie + Jaime’s Nautical Wedding Invitations

Summer is fully upon us here in DC, and with it comes an obsession with the beach and all things nautical! As a girl that grew up along the beaches of Florida but now lives 90 miles inland, I really miss those beaches during the warm and humid summer months. Andrea from Chirp Paperie sent over some nautical invitations that she designed for a wedding on the Massachusetts coast. With the navy and white color palette and anchor details, I can practically smell the salty ocean air through these invitations!

From Andrea: Laurie and Jaime are dear friends that have been eagerly awaiting their wedding day. They reside in Danvers, Massachusetts right between Boston and Manchester by the Sea. Their house is perched on the water and so it was no surprise that Laurie desired a nautical themed wedding and invitation suite.

Their wedding will take place at the Danversport Yacht Club, and feature navy, gray, and classic anchor details. Laurie and Jaime wanted something “clean, contemporary and yet still classic.” Using their vision, I created a simple layout featuring their wedding colors and anchors. I then played with typography options to add a playful vibe to the invitation itself while not steering too far from the classic look they desired.

The invitation was wrapped with a custom striped bellyband featuring their names and wedding date. The very talented Erica Dunhill of WP Inks did the calligraphy on the front of the envelope and was then sealed with silver wax giving it a polished and sophisticated finish.

Jo Allison + Eddie’s BBQ Birthday Party Invitations

Warm and sunny days mean that it’s finally BBQ season! I’m looking forward to lots of BBQs this summer, and I’m absolutely loving these 70th birthday party BBQ invitations and day-of materials from Melissa of Atheneum Creative. Every detail is just too cute, from the pig table numbers to the kraft paper bag menus. Love!

From Melissa: The party was held in a restored barn on the couple’s plantation home, so all the day of materials were rustic to fit the look. The invitations were printed with silver foil on navy paper die cut in the shape of a belt buckle. The menus were printed on a kraft paper bag that held silverware for guests.

The table numbers were custom wood veneer pigs, stained and then screen printed. The escort cards were wetnaps attached to a kraft board and bound with twine. As favors, each guest received mini pies that were wrapped in bandanas along with screen printed tote bags filled with southern goodies.

{happy weekend}

Hello friends. It was a sad week here in my Capitol Hill neighborhood of DC: Frager’s, our beloved hardware store (and 93-year old community institution), was destroyed in a huge fire on Wednesday night. Thankfully everyone made it out of the store okay and the brick facade of the building survived the fire. The owners plan to rebuild and neighborhood businesses have offered temporary work for displaced employees, but I’m still reeling from the destruction. My husband and I moved to Capitol Hill in 2009, and Frager’s quickly became one of my favorite places on the Hill. That probably seems weird, but it’s so much more than a hardware store: my husband and I bought our first Christmas tree together from Frager’s. I’ve purchased enough paint that the guys behind the counter know Sophie by name. Frager’s supports local sports teams, employs neighborhood teens during the summer, and even hosts an egg hunt for little kids during Easter. I look forward to a future teenage Sophie getting her first part-time job there. I just can’t imagine Capitol Hill without Frager’s. Thankfully our neighborhood has a history of rallying together to help local families and businesses in need, and I’m looking forward to helping in any way that I can.

April + Matt’s French Garden Party Wedding Invitations

These beautiful wedding invitations from Nichole at Coral Pheasant combine garden parties with French inspiration with such delightfully whimsical results! Nichole also made sure to adhere to the bride’s wish to use sustainable materials and practices when producing the wedding invitations. The quirky font and calligraphy by Brown Linen is the perfect finishing touch!

From Nichole: April and Matt were married late last summer. The vision for their day was inspired by 1920s garden parties and the delightful French movie Amelie. It was also important to April that sustainable materials be used. With this inspiration in hand we developed a playful suite with free-flowing text typeset in a quirky calligraphy font.

The main invitation was letterpress printed on double-thick 220# ecru Crane’s Lettra while all the enclosures were letterpress printed on 110# Lettra. Lettra is a 100% cotton sheet is made from cotton fibers gleaned from the cotton seeds, after having been cleaned for garment production and before being processed for cotton seed oil. This made it a perfect choice to honor April’s request of using sustainable materials.

French elements were brought into the design on the RSVP and the quote that graces the inside of the kraft mailer. I love when I’m given the opportunity to have fun with the RSVP envelope and can integrate the stamp in a dynamic way. In this instance, the stamp was framed in flourishes the complimented the font. To ensure the envelope would travel successfully through the mail, we did a test mailing before having the envelopes printed. The cards were tucked inside the kraft mailer creating a unique package for guests to open and experience.

The kraft mailer was made from 100% post consumer waste and all the inks were soy based. The cherry on top? My printer has a strict recycling and conservation program and uses bicycle messengers for the majority of their local deliveries. The mailer was sealed with a strip of wash tape and addressed with the beautiful calligraphy of Brown Linen.
