With these beautiful deep blue tones, these stunning Mediterranean-inspired watercolor wedding invitations could be for an al fresco dinner party in Tuscany or an exotic getaway to the Greek Isles! Instead, we’re bringing the Mediterranean a bit closer to home, for a wedding in Houston, Texas! Sarah McKeon of Bluebonnet Press designed these stunning invitations with blue letterpress printed text on white handmade paper. From Sarah: This was one of my favorite custom designs! I love that inspiration can come from anywhere and I’m only limited by my imagination. The inspiration for this invitation suite was the beautiful venue, The Gallery in Houston, which has lots of Mediterranean style architecture and Spanish vibes with all the gorgeous terra cotta tiles. I knew I wanted to use blue because there was going to be blue glassware used in the table settings. I painted a watercolor piece mimicking patterns used in old Spanish tiles, which I then digitized and turned into custom liners for the suite.

I kept the design of the invitations simple with some beautiful typography to not have it compete with the busy liners. To add texture and give the suite that old world feel we were going for, I letterpress printed them on gorgeous handmade paper. The natural feathery edges of handmade paper get my heart every single time! The finishing touches were the blue vintage stamps that pulled everything together.

To continue the theme, the place cards were brush lettered, with the same blue watercolor used in the liners. To save on cost we ended up digitally printing the menus, but gave them a rough deckled edge along with the place cards to echo that detail used in the invitations suite.

As a stationer, when designing wedding invitations I am often one of the first pieces of the puzzle and get to brainstorm and create with brides as everything starts to fall in place. However, sometimes I wish I could be a fly on the wall at the weddings to see how everything came together. Which is why I absolutely love getting photos, it’s such an honor to work with other creative vendors and see how each of our talents play off each other to create a fabulous event!

Happy Weekend!

Ugh. So as I write this, the government has shut down for the second time in less than a month. (Ed Note: Congress passed a spending bill and reopened the government this morning – but still!) My husband is a federal employee, and these repeated shutdowns are both financially scary and really demoralizing. And sadly, it looks like this might be our new normal for a while. So! If you’re interested in supporting Oh So Beautiful Paper and giving my family a boost during this uncertain time, please consider purchasing one of our limited edition art prints in collaboration with Mon Voir. Shipping is free! But in the meantime…

A philanthropically funded Universal Basic Income experiment in California

This is heartbreaking and completely unacceptable: A mother of two young children (a 1 year old and 4 year old) has been detained by ICE since mid-January, when she went in to apply for citizenship.

On immigration: “But if you get a specifically merit-based system… I wouldn’t be here, and chances are neither would you.”

Also, over the past decade, refugees have contributed $63 billion more in government revenues than they cost.

That’s it for me this week. Have a fantastic weekend and I’ll see you here on Monday! xoxo

Quirky Camping-Inspired Watercolor Wedding Invitations

There’s nothing more quirky and adorable than a watercolor illustration of woodland creatures on a mountain lake canoeing adventure! Designer Rolodex member Amanda of Wide Eyes Paper Co. dreamt up these quirky camping-inspired watercolor wedding invitations for a woodsy wedding in the Pacific Northwest. The invitation features a folded 4-panel design, including a custom watercolor illustration with the bride and groom’s beloved pets (so sweet!), keepsake map, and perforated RSVP card!

From Amanda: In the lingering months of winter, it’s time to start enjoy your buffalo check flannel a few more times and enjoy all the hot cocoa as you start organizing the details of your upcoming wedding. Let the adventure begin! was the motto that this Portland outdoorsy couple chose to tell their story and we loved the idea of creating an invitation that guests would cherish even after the wedding.

Mary and Adam were adamant about sending something to their guests that would both stand out in the mail and truly capture the quirky essence of who they are as a couple. This four-paneled format allowed them to express their wedding adventure as a creative narrative, all while keeping everything organized on one piece of elegant paper. You may choose to see the whole, unfolded invitation as one canvas, or treat each panel as its own snapshot. Mary and Adam wanted to be sure to have a custom watercolor that walked their guests through the wedding details in a fun and whimsical way, with the custom watercolor of their pets in a canoe as the beginning panel and the second panel opening up to complete a more classic 5×7 invitation.

With four panels over two sides, the couple was able to customize up to eight different panels. The option to add vintage perforation allows for a portion to be torn off and mailed back without the hassle of keeping several different pieces of paper together (I know I am guilty of losing a rsvp card or two before they even make it to the mail).

One of the panels is a custom watercolor map created to highlight the important spots of the wedding day while keeping the adventure fun and fresh just like a treasure hunt or trail guide. The map will become a memorable keepsake for their guests as they help the happy couple write their love story on their special day.

Inspired by Wes Anderson’s Moonlight Kingdom we hand-painted the couple with portraits in a quirky camp inspired motif.  Adam even had his own Davy Crockett hat! We finished off this set by creating a custom logo for Mary + Adam which is printed on the rustic brown kraft envelopes and custom watercolor envelope liners.

Purple Watercolor Floral and Calligraphy Wedding Invitations

These beautiful wedding invitations combine two major trends for 2018: Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year (Ultraviolet!) and a beautiful vellum overlay! Victoria of Design House of Moira created these vibrant purple watercolor floral and calligraphy wedding invitations with intricate floral illustrations on handmade paper. And that gorgeous hand painted envelope liner! Such a fun way to bring rich color to a wonderful winter wedding.

From Victoria: The bride was torn between two different design paths: a simple suite with monochromatic lettering and artwork and something more moody to reflect the winter wedding…so we did both! She wanted to keep the invitation formal, elegant, and subtle while still incorporating some of the darker tones that reminded her so much of winter.

Created on Arpa paper, a Spanish handmade paper with gorgeous, soft deckling on the edges for a natural and organic look, we designed the main pieces of the suite with modern calligraphy, simple type, and line botanical artwork. To bring in the moody feeling, we created watercolor artwork in deep plums and burgundies as well as a contemporary landscape tree painting reflective of the bride and groom’s hometown and the views from the bride’s parents home, where the wedding was held. We incorporated the darker tones into the vellum overlay, envelope liners, and custom postage.

The save the dates were a tri-fold design, slipped into a small envelope lined with the berry artwork and bound with a thin band of vellum printed in the floral pattern. The ceremony program design, a personal favorite of mine, consists of a vellum cover and is on a smaller scale at 3×5 inches. The booklet was stitched along the spine in pale blush thread.

The entire suite was mailed with custom postage featuring two different artwork styles: one with the darker plum tones and one featuring the line botanicals used throughout the printed pieces. Each of the three envelopes in the suite featured different envelope liners: the save the date opened to the plum artwork, the reply card to the line botanical art and the main invitation featured the landscape painting in dark purple and plum hues.
